Re: USB Install versus DVD (19 replies, posted in Other)
I found this tool extremely helpful in getting both XP as well as 7 to install from USB:
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/120444- … -with-gui/
You can even create one stick that can install both (as well as some other useful stuff)!
Make sure to grab the latest beta - I found it to work just perfectly.
Installing from a flash medium as opposed to an optical/mechanical combination prooves to be much faster and less prone to burning/reading errors.
As long as you BIOS supports it, it definately is the wa to go, IMO.
Plus, carrying that stick around is much more convenient than a CD/DVD with case etc...
Additionally, some drives would dislike my DVD+RWs, but even using a DVD+R doesn't help all the time (or you have to switch vendors - I already am bruning them at no faster than 4x for compatibility's sake).
So far, the stick has worked in just every system I plugged it in...

Wim, has there been any response?
I've just been trying it again (mostly out of curiosity), and now it's failing on DriverPack Graphics A, DriverPack Sound A and DriverPack Sound B.
Could it be due to size of the packs?
So far, none of the smaller ones has been affected, as far as I can tell.
EDIT: And again, worked after several tries.
Interesting thing is, they either failed all or worked all in one go.
Seems to support the server overload issue theory.
The files themselves remain intact apparently (thanks to checksum test).

Re: [IMPL] Problems with internal card readers (19 replies, posted in Feature Requests)
With the rising number of integrated card readers, I'm surprised there aren't more people who have problems though. Maybe I am the only one having this problem because I'm installing from USB, not from CD.
Well, what can I say, I also use card readers in all of my systems, none of them gives me any problems when installing.
Maybe it depends on the make or model of the reader or it's down to the BIOS.
I'm not entriely sure as most installs have been from DVD, but at least on notebooks, installing from USB wasn't affecting this.

Re: German translation (10.06) (3 replies, posted in Translations Team)
Heh, there's more:
This is how it looks like under Windows 7 (Classic theme):
And this is how it looks like under Windows XP:
As you can see, regular vs bold font, which leads to cut-off lines of text (that I could fix by deleting empty lines but that would reduce readability, IMO).
This may also lead to other text being cut off, haven't checked yet...
Want some official bug report for that or is it a feature?

Topic: German translation (10.06) (3 replies, posted in Translations Team)
So, I finally got around to it (uploading in a sec).
Couple of problems arised, though.
Apart from several GUI space problems (cut-off sentences, German is usually longer than English while containing the same amount of information - I know that's inefficient, but that's how it is )
I can't post pictures of them all because I do not have a source I could open so I am not being shown all windows.
Wasn't there some sort of dev mode that allowed exactly that, for translation purposes and all?
Then, there's at least one item that cannot be translated yet because it's hard-coded:
When updating the DriverPacks, there's this pop-up window showing current speed, progress etc.
It says "$ KB of $ @ $KBs"
First of all, I'd like to be able to translate "of", then, maybe both values should be the same dimension (eg KB and KB both, not KB vs. B). Also, it would be nice of KBs would acutally be KB/s as it's KB per second, not times second *nitpick*
Then, the following issue appears:
That might be due to my netbook's desktop res of only 1024x600, but as there's a lot of free space it might be better to shrink the window the the actual size needed and include scrolling bars if appropriate.
Well, that's it for now - I'm certain I will notice more once it has been uploaded...

Either try to write proper English OR proper German, not some mixture of both, that only makes it unnecessarily complicated to read and understand.

So what?
If you are unsure, just use both or all packs.
That is perfectly fine - you do not have to decide for either A, B or C.
After all, you aren't creating an install source for one specific machine, are you?
Usually, the goal is to make it as universal as possible simply because you never know what kind of HW you will come across next.
Space should not be an issue with DVD-R(W)s readily available everywhere.
I guess it would take more time to find out what card is inside and what packs to use than just to dl them all and slipstream everything...

Re: SAD-disc does not work completely... (15 replies, posted in Feedback and Support - DriverPacks Base)
Just a long shot, but as it happened to me once...
Defective RAM may result in corrupted drivers being extracted/copied from the source, hence driver install will fail.
As for the RWs:
I know it might not be the most clever idea to just introduce another possible source of error when you are troubleshooting but if you've got a spare USB stick with about 2 GB of capacity, http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/120444- … -with-gui/ might actually help you save on the RW.
Been using it quite successfully myself for a while and I found it to be more reliable than an RW, as DVD readers may dislike them.
OTOH, it requires the BIOS to boot from USB, but most of those post 2000 offer such an option.

Re: SAD-disc does not work completely... (15 replies, posted in Feedback and Support - DriverPacks Base)
Try scanning your DriverPacks for errors using either 7-Zips archive check option or comparing MD5 checksums on the DL page with the files on your local system.
Maybe something got corrupted...

Tough question.
Does the phone need seperate drivers to be reckognized by the system and therefore for the modem drivers to even work?
If so, the case is clear, phone drivers to phone and the phone-as-a-modem drivers to modem.
If it's both in one package, you may want to toss a dime or something
Doesn't really matter, I'd say, as long as you don't duplicate them.

Re: Pre setup cmd file not found (8 replies, posted in Software)
The problem I now have is that there is no repair option
It's either that OR unattended install. Don't like it? Complain to MSFT about it.
Honestly, I can't even remember when I used repair last time - and then it was just to check out what it does.
I ususally find that systems in need of repair are so much fubar that the best idea is to setup them again, clean, with all updates and drivers applied.
Works faster, too, I think, because repair is not always going ti fix things from what I've gathered so it would require some manual intervention anyway.
YMMD, of course.
Would this be workable, NLite to thin XP cd down & to set up user options Then iterigate SP3 & update using RVM (not sure what to do with dotnet1.1 sp1?
Very, VERY bad idea doing it that way around!
Honestly!
The first thing you should do if you don't already own an SP3 disc: Integrate the silly SP3 before you do anything.
Best is to use nLite for this if you are going to use it anyway.
So here goes, you start up nLite, select your source (disc in drive to have it copy over to the HDD), then select integrate SP and make ISo as the only options!
That ISO you can reuse for each iteration, so back it up somewhere on your HDD.
Now you can either mount the image using Daemon Tools etc or extract it using 7-Zip etc
Im probably not the only 1 who is struggling and would appreciate your help v much. and continue with the nLite process.
Reason for this is simple:
If you remove anything before SP3, SP3 may add it again, but incomplete, resulting in errors.
Reason #2: nLite can't set stuff for things not present.
SP3 was a major overhaul and some options may only be available if SP3 has been detected by nLite.
You could also integrate the update packs using nLite - why utilize more tools than you need to?
Keeps the error probability down, too.
I am not 100% confident, as I'm not using RVM's but Sereby's, but I think even that works with nLite, too.
Good luck!

Ok, great, now he's emailing me about this...
Curiously, the email was placed in the junk folder automatically - looks like my mailing software is doing a great job
Dunno if this is supposed to be one of these mother-father things but it's the only reason I could think of to ask me about it when I haven been completely uninvolved with this so far.
Anyway, if you want help, ask on the Forum, not via email.
And if you need to email me anyway, at least try to use halfway decent English - I can't even make out half of what you wrote.
Also, by deleting/editing all your former posts, your credibility just has hit rock bottom. Hiding your own posts doesn't make you appear as if you stand by your own word...
Oh, and trying to make me act against my fellow Mods and Admins definately doesn't win you any sympathy - that's pretty mendacious and treacherous, to say the least.
Shame on you!
