The log at at 154KB exceeds the allowed 65KB limit and there is no provision for attaching a zipped file.

There seems to be a quirk with using the DriverPacks along with XP SP4, specifically it doesn't like any of the drivers being kept.

The finisher runs just fine if no drivers are kept, but if any are it crashes out with the message "could not delete DSPdsblr.exe". Tested on a XP pro source with SP4 slipstreamed and no other modifications.

It has been suggested that due to the presence of a few sp4*.* files, the finisher mistakenly believes it's working on Windows 2000.

Here's a copy of the failing settings file.

I doubt I can help you, that level of tinkering probably requires similar knowledge to that needing for making an OS update pack, do you have these problems in XP if an update pack is/isn't integrated?

Have you considered asking for help on the "Update Pack Discussion" subforum over at RyanVM.net?

I haven't mucked around with newer certificates other than installing the latest officially supported one on first boot.

Does the driver install even though it's not signed?  To get the XP x64 Radeon X700 driver to install on my laptop I had to remove the existing graphics drivers with nLite, otherwise it installed a generic one even though the specific one was integrated into the source.

The guide I write starts with this:

Important Security Notice: As Windows 2000 has been out of support since July 2010 and no major web browser still supports it, it is not safe to use Windows 2000 on an Internet facing machine.  At this stage Windows 2000 is mainly recommended for use in a virtual machine or on unconnected old hardware to run legacy applications.  If you wish to use old hardware connected to the Internet a Linux Distribution is a much safer choice.

So as I'm targeting OS stability and compatibility with programs that were designed specifically to run on W2K, I don't use a modified kernel.

Using DP Base 8.12.5

No I haven't and while sometimes the problems I've encountered are due to the DriverPacks (exceeding Windows 2000's memory limit on Mass Storage textmode drivers) at other times they are due to bugs in the drivers themselves (later nVidia drivers resulting in corrupted video playback in W2K limited accounts).

I have bugger-all hardware left for use in testing Windows 2000 (was asked to clean out most of the old junk I had lying around) so I'll stick with the older versions that have had more extensive community testing with the OS and hardware they are likely to be used on.

Well I have the ones I need, being those from around May 2008, after that they tended to get a bit iffy on Windows 2000.

I've linked to uploaded versions of these for use with my Windows 2000 install media creation guide, but you never know when someone might want access to an older pack (usually to find a regression bug).

If one searches for Mass Storage DriverPacks on Windows NT5.x one gets a 404 error.

Also I note that quite a few older versions of the packs are not available for download, I have about a 100 older versions archived on my machine, would there be any interest in having them uploaded and linked to the torrent tracker?

Did a few more tests, it only fails in VirtualBox if one uses the default ICH AC97 audio, it won't BSOD if one changes the emulated audio hardware to SoundBlaster 16.

Similarly it will install correctly in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1.

For test purposes used a clean copy of Windows 2000 sp4 and only integrated DriverPack Sound A 10.06

Tested (and failed) in Sun VirtualBox 3.0.14 (only takes a few minutes to reach the BSOD)

Too many drivers are being loaded for Windows 2000 installation resulting in a corrupted file message during textmode installation, the last version without this problem was 8.05

Beginning with 10.03 (8.05 did not have this issue) using Sound A on Windows 2000 will result in a BSOD during installation (GUI stage) related to portcls.sys

There's no problem, to get W2K to install I simply don't integrate the mass storage drivers as textmode.

As for the network card, there are no Windows drivers, Solaris & Linux only.

Not sure what the HWID is (it's a right pain to find under Linux), I can however tell you that it is an:
Adaptec aic7899G Ultra160 SCSI adaptor

Now if only there had been written a Windows driver for this rather cool network card:

Don't think so, not an online gamer.

Most of my testing is done in VMware as my base OS is XP x64, but I do have two Y2K era boxes that I use for real world tests every couple of months.

Unfortunately my dual P3-1000 server (Intel STL2, scavenged from work) uses a SCSI controller that while part of the standard Win 2000 Mass Storage drivers is marked "do not load if OS=W2K" in the mass storage driverpacks.

Also I picked up a Sun 64-bit PCI 4-port Ethernet card for $5 at a local computer fair for it, but under Windows it keeps throwing up a hardware error.  Under Linux it works and shows up as ... wait for it ... "Sun Happy Meal".

Perhaps just add something along the lines of:

The command to run the finisher is: %SystemDrive%\DPsFnshr.exe

to the text box at the bottom of the finisher method selection page, there's plenty of space.

After slipstreaming all packs & mass storage textmode, I get the following error with Windows 2000:

The file ahci7xx.sys is corrupted.

Under the previous DP base release (8.05), if one chose to use the custom finisher method, there would be a nice pop-up box describing what had to be done to start the finisher and the appropriate command line would be copied to the clipboard.

With DP base 8.12.3 this feature seems to have gone the way of the Dodo.
================================================================================

Oops, it occurred to me later that as DP base was running off an existing DPs_BASE.ini it would assume that I already knew how to launch the finisher.

Sure enough if I changed to another way to start the finisher and then changed back I got the pop-up box.

When doing a full KTD install, there remains an old (v5.1.3102.1360) & vulnerable version of GDIplus.dll at:

\DriverPacks\S\z2
\DriverPacks\S\zi

The current version of GDIplus.dll is 5.1.3102.3352, you can get it from the links in Microsoft security advisory MS08-052:

The download page lists an MD5 of 538e157e13f327ae452509c78e891f18 & filesize 25,219,348
I get an MD5 of .......................0914E390A2AEF9D62BFD695C044EC006 & filesize 21,077,373

7zip reports that the archive I downloaded is not corrupt, also the download page notes that the file is 20.1MB AND 24.0MB

Looks like the mass storage driverpacks are once again really pushing the memory limit for Windows 2000 textmode.

I used the 8.01RC2 base for integration and tested in VMWare server where the above error occurred and VirtualPC 2007 where it installed correctly.

The same image file used in both cases and both VMs were allocated 384MB RAM, however VMWare server had a HDD of 320GB while VirtualPC 2007 only had a HDD of 16GB.

Just a minor GUI bug (held over from 7.05.2).

If you select "Custom" Finisher method, when you get to the settings review page it shows that you have selected "GUI RunOnce" Finisher method.

The trick is here to get past this "dumbass" barrier by convincing the tech support folks that you are having a real problem, know that you have done everything written in the FAQ (which you also read and understood) and your problem can only be solved by a technician/engineer of theirs.

And you'd be right:

[Edit]

Apparently, it's a known problem:

Hello Kurt,

I don't think your experiencing any stability problems or hardware problem. There are known problems with the Full Screen video function from release 85 and on including sync issues and aspect ratio handling. Driver developers are aware of this problem and will resolve the problem in the future. As a workaround disable Full Screen video. Also disable overlay in your Media Player.

-Open Media Player 10 or 11.

Go to tools->options->performance->advanced.

Uncheck use overlays for both Video Acceleration and DVD Video.

Check Use High Quality Mode and click ok and apply.

-Thereafter, play your video or dvd in Media Player and drag the application window to your second display and maximize it.

Best regards,
NVIDIA

A bit of a pain if you use your PC as a media center, somehow I think I'll stick with the older (working) drivers.

nVidia's response to notification that the error was introduced in the 8x.xx forceware series:

Response (MZ)     06/25/2007 10:16 AM
Hi Kurt,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.

This not the normal behavior of the graphics card and In order to troubleshoot the issue you are facing I suggest you to please visit the given link and run the mentioned software in order to test the graphics card and please let me know the amount of power supply you are using on this computer.

http://www.sharewareconnection.com/vide … y-test.htm

Please note that if your system crashes and freezes while running this software, then the graphics  card has some problems. It might be defective. So, you might have to look for different graphics card for your system.

Looking forward for your response.

and my response to their response:

Well, I ran the suggested software for 10 hours with no errors detected.

I find this not at all surprising as given the symptoms, a hardware error being the cause seems rather unlikely.

If the error was caused by hardware, one might reasonably expect that the error would be either consistent or intermittent.

However, an error that occurs consistently with non-Administrator accounts on certain driver versions, definitely points to software.

Sometimes one has to wonder if they actually read the support request or if they have a "trained monkey" problem solving flowchart that has to be followed.
