I find myself unsatisfied with the Atheros WiFi Utility.  I've seen it auto-connect to unencrypted wifi networks, even though i haven't selected a network.  I don't know if this is changeable, maybe someone else can offer more insight.
Some people may find this behavior desirable, yet I don't.  Just a 'heads-up' to those that agree.

Noted, thank you.

You could try this one (DriverVer=05/20/2010,2.0.0.49) from  station-drivers.com (sigh) big_smile
(OP: why won't that url display properly?  incorrect syntax?)

WindowsUpdateCatalog has v2.0.0.32 http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/ … 9ce7f059b7

Better yet, how about (Win7=07/28/2010,2.0.0.53;Vista=07/28/2010,8.0.0.76;XP=07/28/2010,7.7.0.93) from TP-Link themselves (including utility, although i, myself, IMHO no longer trust 'Atheros' WiFi utilities - I've seen them auto connect to public WiFi!):  http://www.tp-link.com/english/soft/TL- … 110125.zip  cool cool
EDIT:  oops, that driver was for 7015 deviceID's - the 9271,7010, & 1006 HWID's are commented out, along with the String descriptions.

These may be the last drivers available for this type of Atheros USB WiFi Chipset, as Atheros was acquired by Qualcomm recently.  Hopefully at least one of these drivers works for your hardware.

I wonder (openly) if a generic version of this driver exists with all applicable HWID's?

I see that IDT (Integrated Device Technology) acquired the PC-audio division of Sigmatel in mid 2006, yet the driver you've mentioned is dated mid 2007.  Would this explain the similarity of this driver to the structure of the IDT HDA drivers?  hmm

Perhaps robf's HDA chip was SigmaTel IP with an IDT logo on it.

Botch job, indeed.  I have a new-found respect for the DriverPack's testers.

I could not remove the ghost-driver from the Device Manager, nor could i remove the VID_0800&DEV_0080 references from the registry (LogConf key wouldn't budge, even in 'Safe-Mode').  So i decided to try removing the Class references instead.  That was not my first monumental mistake.  Brazenly neglecting to enable System Restore, nor exporting the keys i deleted really complicated issues.

Serendipitously, i have discovered a way to make Safe-Mode PERMANENT.  At least i was able to change this slightly, and make Safe-Mode with Networking permanent.  Unfortunately, even though i could possibly connect to my network, half of the services don't enumerate anymore.  I don't relish the idea of internet without firewall, antivirus, etc.  The ghost driver is gone, though. big_smile  I tried rebuilding the keys from scratch, using the 'inf' file as a guide, this did not improve matters.

I was hoping for a flawless victory, yet now i'm eating humble-pie.  sad

If i ever get the idea into my head that a 64-bit driver should work in XP, i'll remember this eXPerience.

The driver in SoundB 'D\S\I8\STHDA.INF' is newer than the one on dell's site (07/27/2006,5.10.5143.0 - no 'control panel').  I don't know if it will work for your HW, though.

DO NOT install this particular driver on 32-bit! Refer to this post:  http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic. … 975#p43975

no luck with D/S/I/STHDA.inf from SoundB?

this didn't work for me on xp at all.  'Windows could not load the driver for ACEECA Handheld Devices'.  It appears the CLASS wasn't what i'd hoped for (Windows didn't like the CLASS, either).  I was hoping for updated USB to Serial drivers (CLASS:Ports), hence the mistaken request to include in Chipset.

Wowsers, this driver was a real botch-job on XP.  I have a 'ACEECA Handheld Device' Class in Device Manager with a greyed-out 'USB Serial Adaptor'  I cannot remove this device.  Windows complains 'Windows fails to uninstall the device.  The device may be required to boot the computer.'
I have found references to it in HKLM/System/ControlSet001/Enum/USB, HKLM/System/ControlSet002/Enum/USB, & HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Enum/USB.

DO NOT install this particular driver on XP!

First question, is your mobo BIOS set to boot from 'SCSI'?  Are you able to see the SATA BIOS RAID utility on initial boot-up? http://support.gateway.com/s//MOTHERBD/ … 47nv.shtml

I wonder if you have the latest BIOS for your IO Flex SATA controller.  http://www.koutech.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=169 (Beware - a bad flash can 'brick' your add-in card!)
It may be helpful to post the numbers, etc upon the controller chip itself.  Post the info upon the BIOS chip, as well.

I am only posting the following link for info purposes only. http://www.siliconimage.com/support/index.aspx

Now that XP has assigned a drive letter for your SSD drive (& detected in Device Manager), is it now possible for XP to use this drive as a bootable system partition? (an open question to those who know far more than i)

Is it not also possible that your cloning software, or cloning method is flawed? hmm

Oh, yeah.  No more spam, please. mad

After searching for the latest 32-bit Diagnostic CD, you may have at least 2 options for the D800.  Bay-Wolf has version A1236.  http://www.bay-wolf.com/downloads.htm  It is possible to update this to A1246 with the update files from dell (after extracting, & updating the ISO manually).  http://support.dell.com/support/downloa … amp;impid=  A similar process is described here --> http://www.bay-wolf.com/diag.htm

You are limited to version A1102 on the C840 (from Bay-Wolf).  I have made a A1232 diagnostic CD for my C610.  I have uploaded it if you decide to try it.  http://www.mediafire.com/file/q6t2ssm76qfq9j3/A1232.rar  big_smile

I used the FreeWare 'IMGburn' to make the A1232 Diagnostic CD.  Edit: *Link Removed* big_smile

Dell Latitude C840 spec:  http://www.dell.com/downloads/us/produc … 0_spec.pdf
    1GB max on i845MP Chipset  AKA ICH3-M  use c:\windows\inf\mshdc.inf
Dell Latitude D800 spec:  http://www.dell.com/downloads/us/produc … 0_spec.pdf & 3D demo http://www.dell.com/html/us/products/latitude/d800.html

They'll only seperate me from my old Latitude C610, when they pry it from my cold, dead hands! lol
It's perfect for flashing SPI's, Automotive diagnostics, etc.

PS:  Thankfully Dell designed their laptops to last longer than desktops!  (rule of thumb: take warranty length & multiply by 1.5)
I noticed that my C610 keyboard had no plastic liner to catch debris, so any detritus, etc. collect internally. yikes

I thought it may be interesting to note the actual controller chips, which could indicate possible generic driver (not BIOS! - risk of 'brick') updates for Dawicontrol RAID controllers.  Serendipity occurred, instead.  Silicon Image, for example, has no drivers newer than 2010.  The Dawicontrol drivers & BIOS are from 2011.  Note that this is only theoretical, and yet to be tested. smile

* note:  these drivers might work with generic cards (probably BIOS dependent, though - only update BIOS if you're willing to risk 'bricking' your card!) & include the 'Virtual Processor' driver
** note:  latest BIOS seems to be SiI-based???
*** note:  Wikipedia notes 'Product Alerts' that may or may not have been solved long ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Image

I will attempt to test with a generic SiI680A-based RAID card (time permitting - & time is tight for me), since the BIOS is socketed & i cannot 'brick' it.  I note that the Dawicontrol BIOS is 128k in size, as is the SiI BIOS, even the PnP-ID at the EOF is the same.  The key used to enter the RAID BIOS Utility is different. (F4 with Dawicontrol BIOS)
This could prove to be a nice update to my PnP-ID-modded SiI680A BIOS v3.4.00.  I would assume that the original SiI DOS-based BIOS-flasher would be necessary for this update.  I wonder if the RAID monitor will work, too.

If only there were 'motherboard'-based RAID BIOS' available from Dawicontrol. yikes

I still have a good sized spool of 60/40 left.  Many datasheets advise against reworked on 'unleaded' circuits.  So far, the only objection i have found, is that the resultant rework no longer complies for Pb-free status, & shipping requirements!  I do not know if bimetal corrosion could be a problem?

can you post some HWID's (&/or USB device descriptors), as time permits, there are some 'factory tools' online for some controller types.

PS(non-adobe):  Some flash drives had 2 flash chips on one device in a 'RAID' config.

*note:  defragging may be undesirable on SSD's, i'm not sure if this is true with 'Hybrid' drives.  Factory tools may also be available online for some SSD controller types.  Gouda, very Gouda! big_smile

Maybe this will be a 'wild-goose' chase for you, maybe not.  Bear in mind that the link i supplied from dell is for the GX620 series, not the D800.

Perhaps concentrate Diagnostic CD testing to HDD controller & USB testing, to simplify (On non-essential machines).  Maybe this will help you identify trouble before it strikes.  These units must be getting closer to the highest-slope of the MTBF curve.  The smallest form-factor units should be the most likely to approach 0 hour.

A non-contact IR thermometer should help assess likelihood of failure, without consuming a great deal of time.  Look for thermal-zones with temperatures above 55°C.  If memory serves, accuracy varies inversely depending upon distance to target (for small targets).
