MS Windows 8 UEFI 'Secure Boot' locking out linux appears more deliberate, in light of the following article titled "Microsoft milks Casio for using Linux".

um.. {warez} is a taboo subject here; you will not find assistance here with Hiren's.
http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic. … 093#p45093

PIO at writing; THAT's why i've always had trouble with this now non-RAID card.
Author of Ultra100 to FastTrak100 mod suggested that it was not known how to reverse the mod.

I have had similar results with the non-WHQL'ed Ultra.inf driver from \D\M\P\ v2.0.0.43
The Win2k & Win2k3 drivers from the fore-referenced driver are also non-WHQL'ed (last WHQL driver presumably was pre-v2.0.0.42 dated latter-2002).

One performance difference i have noted so far is a slight increase in CPU usage (24% average for the same DVD+RW disc - only testing 1 LG optical drive for now).
The write speed & cpu usage went haywire about halfway through the burn with an average of 1.2x and the cpu usage all over the map.  The verify had good read spead (15MB/s), unfortunately
not without read errors (11).  I will try another fresh DVD+RW to see if i obtain the same results.   ....Coming Soon!

Later, i will test the vista driver on xp & report results; i have found no applicable driver on Windows Update Catalog.
I will use a test computer rather than my main machine as this may not work (i sense mr_smartepants evacuating to a safe distance...:)) *** Do not try this at home!!!

If i note no improvement in the write speed/Buffer of a DVD+RW, i will skip further testing for XP.  No sense trying to solve this yet.

look up  big_smile

then check this --> http://driverpacks.net/docs/beginners-guide-windows-xp
   & ignore the reference to nLite. (a moderator might decide to speak to this as i'm not yet certain how to properly integrate updates before using BASE)
  Please refrain from posting in Topics marked [SLVD] (Solved). smile

After an install, i have v5.1.2600.5512 with ultra.sys v1.43(build 0603) instead.

To be fair; it is an ultra -> fasttrak100 mod that i have presumably reversed to be an ultra once again.
If the HWID for it doesn't jive (PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_4D30&CC_0180), then this may be my error.
ok, i've found a reference here:  http://www.911cd.net/forums/lofiversion … 16941.html, so my HWID is likely not in error.

I did experience a problem burning a disc to DVD with the stock XP driver; the device buffer kept filling & emptying, and the record speed was 1.4X instead of 4X.
Disc reading appeared to work at full speed (11MB/s).  I am told that the BIOS associated with this series of Promise controllers is limited to 137GB, yet either driver will handle up to 2TB in Windows. (unconfirmed by me)

I will venture to retry this with driver v2.0.0.43, then this Vista WHQL driver --> http://firstweb.promise.com/upload/Supp … driver.rar
  if necessary, with the goal of reporting my findings.

I note that of the .cat files included in the SiliconImage original driver, only the Win2k & Win2k3 cat files have the same SHA1 Hash value.  http://firstweb.promise.com/support/fil … er_b43.zip
The files included in \D\M\P\ do indeed match the SHA1 signatures for WinXP, not the files from the Win2k nor Win2k3 folders.

I had no IDE devices plugged in when i ran SaveHWIDs.

minor typos in the 'readme', perhaps?

-Method-1: Extract the contents of all DriverPacks to the NT6\x64\D\ folder so that the folder heirarchy looks like this: \NT5\x64\D\*.  Method 1 will fail if the \NT6\x64\ folder contains any .7z DriverPacks.

Here's hoping that this helps:  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011 … nment.aspx big_smile

There is now a forum available from MS:  http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums … al/threads

When Win8 goes RTM, SecureBoot may prevent execution/installation of Linux, running AntiVirus Rescue CD's, bootloaders for Virtual Machines, updating Option ROM's manually, etc.  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011 … -uefi.aspx sad

Excerpts from the aforementioned site's comments section:

Hairs_ wrote:

It's interesting that Microsoft have chosen to respond to the myriad of comments complaining that the Windows 8 boot loader (like the Win 7 boot leader before it) assumes that it has the right to overwrite any other boot loader that the user might have installed, without so much as a warning, or an accommodation to existing setups - with a post about UEFI Secure Boot.

Let's be clear about something:

UEFI Secure Boot is totally unrelated to the complaints about the Win 8 Boot Loader. @Steven_Sinofsky knows this, but has chosen to ignore the issue. I take exception to that.

For example, if you have an existing dual-boot Win 7/Win XP machine, and install the Win 8 Preview, it will simply overwrite the existing boot loader. It will recognise the Win 7 installation, but will remove the Win XP install from the menu. That's totally unacceptable install behaviour. Note that this happens on Non-UEFI systems, so Microsoft can't use "UEFI Secure Boot" as an excuse for why the installer does this.

If Microsoft simply accommodated users with dual-boot systems inside the Windows Boot loader, then users wouldn't have to install a GRUB loader between the BIOS and the Win Boot loader, would they? But that's never going to happen.

I find this post disingenuous and unhelpful, frankly. It's irrelevant what a locked down OEM laptop single booting Win 8 is doing when complaints are being made about dual boot enterprise or "home professional" installation procedures.

Keys will leak wrote:

Microsoft should make sure that Windows-Certified systems have an ability to update certificate lists. All keys leak, and if Secure Boot boots system that uses a compromised certificate, it's worse than having no Secure Boot at all.

I wonder what potential trouble that could cause when Win8-SP1 is eventually released. hmm

This was also used on a previous nV graphics driver; perhaps this could lead to an updated Win8 driver.

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=210184

One would find such an updated driver on Microsoft Update as referenced here:  http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=351290
efforting...  Nope, Windows Update Catalog has not been helpful.  One would likely need to install win8 to access updated Windows 8 drivers.

Welcome to the new nightmare! yikes

Walk into any computer store ask for a Matrox product: "Who?" will be your response.

Nothing a merger or acquisition with/by nV or Chipzilla wouldn't solve. big_smile

add the Environmental Variable after Right-Clicking on My Computer (sorry, i'm stuck on xp at the moment - directions for 7 are slightly different) "DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES" and change the value to read 1.  Close that window.

Hit 'start' and in the Search bar, type "DEVMGMT.MSC" (or make a shortcut to it on the desktop).

Click 'View' and select 'Show hidden devices'.  Now you should be able to see your 'Ghost' drivers (Nicholas Cage not included).

Better yet you could collect your HWID's & post them here.

In the future you may find that before a reinstall of windows that there may have already been a provision in your old OS to make rescue disks.
Better yet, wouldn't this be a great time to learn how to make an updated Windows7 install disc with most of the pertinent drivers already included?

Beware, the Ask.com toolbar may be transmitting location info & recording IP addresses, even after declining their license agreement.

Location data was recorded in my registry here --> [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ask.com.tmp]
  as well as a pair of log files in my %temp% folder.  Funny thing is, they got my location wrong!  They were close, though.

This was my experience upon install of the latest version of ImgBurn & Avira AntiVirus Free (collected without choice of accept/decline) sad
They insist that i should not be using Spybot instead of their WebGuard (powered by Ask.com - Don't Ask), yet they have yet to elaborate.
Edit:  one moderator on their forum suggests that it is up to the user.  http://forum.avira.com/wbb/index.php?pa … ost1117580
         allegedly Ask.com gets paid for each install of toolbar http://forum.avira.com/wbb/index.php?pa … ost1111180
         formerly discovered targetting children with ads 2005 http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/insta … es-banner/
       put that together with collection of geolocation data could potentially spell doom for any company partnering with Ask.com's Toolbar in it's present form.

If you do not want the toolbar, yet you like the software that it is bundled with, simply disconnect from the internet, install the program,
deselect any options associated with Ask, Finish; reconnect to internet. big_smile
Edit:  the former procedure has yet to be confirmed to prevent or stop geo-location.

http://forum.avira.com/wbb/index.php?pa … dID=136682   http://forum.avira.com/wbb/index.php?pa … dID=136708

This behavior may be enough to have Ask toolbar classified as 'malware' once again.  The ball is in Spybot's court now. cool

Edit: you could probably ignore the above drivers (at a minimum).

XDDM WHQL drivers here --> http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/suppo … ad/?id=449
                 64bit here --> http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/suppo … ad/?id=450

WDDM WHQL drivers for M series 7_x86 here --> http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/suppo … ad/?id=455  as previously noted by atlesj
                                   release notes --> ftp://ftp.matrox.com/pub/mga/archive/w7 … es.401.pdf
                                        7_x64 here --> http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/suppo … ad/?id=456

DisplayPort, HDMI support & stereoscopic support included where applicable.  Not noted elsewhere; the XPDDM drivers add WHQL support for Win2k & since they are WHQL'ed for Vista, the WHQL will be valid for Win7, too.

Curious, on an install of xp on a nforce500 board, i had a "Matrox Extio PCI Standard PCI-to-PCI Bridge" installed.  Until now i thought it may have been licensed IP, now i wonder if it is related to other problems with Matrox drivers.

I sure love Nirsoft's "Hash my files" for comparing packs with many files.

perhaps there is a piece of HW that could commonly identify most modern intel chipsets such as a "Firmware Hub Device", a intel USB Universal Host Controller, etc. hmm

Even though you may be at work on a newer version, i have sent a false-positive report to Avira.

You will find that the latest packs already contain recent NEC/Renesas USB3 drivers, just not the latest yet.

It may be best to ensure that your hardware has the latest BIOS. (BEWARE - improperly applied BIOS updates can 'brick' your hardware)

Start the executive, do not click next.  Navigate to your temporary folder, the msi will be in a folder with a name like '{DED5BB9A-63BC-45A3-8B5F-ADD1B6A40195}' (works with xp)
The nusb3drv.msi file can then be UniExtracted. big_smile
