Topic: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

Hi !

I have come across a serious problem with the AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver that is included with the Chipset pack x86.

If this driver is integrated into the Win7 image, it will cause some devices to fail with the following error message:

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use (Code12)

I have seen this problem on two PCs so far.

The first PC can be easily reproduced by anyone of you who has access to a HyperV Server. If you install Windows7 with this driver integrated into a HyperV virtual machine with a legacy network card configured it will not have any network access because the network adapter driver for the "Intel 21140 Bades PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter" cannot be started. In addition the "Microsoft Emulated S3 Device Cap" System device will also fail to start. Installing the Integration services (drivers for HyperV) will not help and the ATI driver cannot be uninstalled (at least I did not find it) so the machine is more or less broken.

Here are some pics:

(I have no idea why they do not show like the one below even with the "img" Tag)

The second PC where I have found this problem is on a small Asus eepc Netbook (I don´t have the details anymore because the pc did not belong to me but I can find this out again)

Here the device was the
Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset Family driver:

I don´t have the Hardware IDs for this right now but I can get it next week if needed.

I would suggest that you drop that driver from the pack, who knows what other device it conflicts with ...
Took me at least 12 hours to find the culprit for those problems ... :-(

Bye
Alex

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

Just wanted to confirm this problem...

I import driverpacks into Microsoft SCCM 2007. If I don't disable the mentioned filter driver in SCCM I experience the exact same issues (on all machines I've tried on).

Thanks a lot midiboy for identifying the source. Probably saved me much time.

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

Which pack is this in (x86/x64)?  And what driver is causing the problem?  Folder?
I just updated all the Intel drivers, does this solve it?

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

I fixed a reported this months ago here but it went on def ears and never made it in to the final uploads. That is one reason I stopped updating the packs. We you guys said they no longer needed to be tested. They do and should be tested before being released to the general public this error is only on the x86 pack.

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

I'll get this into the main pack right away.
It's not that the packs don't need testing, DISM is very good at reporting .inf integration errors.  So a huge chunk of testing is done by DISM so we don't have to.
I always do test integrations to check for errors before uploading.
Maybe we need to rethink the broader scope of testing.
I just thought you were on vacation big_smile.

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

The problem was that the amd/ati specific driver is called "pci.sys" and it will overwrite the standard win7 pci.sys, causing all the problems. This applies to VM's too. I assume this is long since addressed by smartypants but it would be nice if AMD would use a unique name so that we dont have to make a workaround for it.

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

Having the same issue and it seems to affect all my laptops with Intel Video Cards.  Is there a workaround for this?

What pack are you using?  This was solved with the current 10.11 DriverPack Chipset

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

Using OEM HP Drivers.  These are all added to the base image to support around 6 different HP Laptops.  The only ones with any issue are the ones with the Intel Video because of the AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver.  The image is a x64 version if that makes a difference.  Is there a way to alter the registry to keep this from happening?

Oh, I thought you were reporting a problem with our DriverPacks.  This is a DriverPacks support forum.

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

DP_Chipset_wnt6-x86_100201
- Removed Causing major problems on laptop installs.
-C\ATI  AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver

but in the DP_Chipset_wnt6-x86_1104
Added
- AMD\1 AMD SouthBridge drivers from 8.83-110218a-114078C-EDG_Direct (nt6)

why?

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

It's a newer version and presumably they fixed the problem.
If the problems still exists, we'll remove them again.
I've never had the problem in the first place so I have no way of testing.

In 8.83-110218a-114078C-EDG_Direct not fixed - i download 8.84-110309a-115580C-EDG_Direct may be this newest version...

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

Well we got a whole load of new HP workstations (AMD Phenom) at work and they all need these drivers.  That was why I added them.
In any case, the main cause for problems was the older drivers were named "pci.sys" but they're now renamed "atipcie.sys" which avoids the whole issue.
Thanks for the 8.84 alert...downloading now... wink

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

The AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver causes problems like in the first post. No fix from AMD... Tested on an Asus EeePC with Intel-Chipset and Intel Graphic.

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

OK, that's proof enough for me.  They're OUT!

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

AMD 3GIO PCIE Filter - delete
AMD USB Filter - delete
SMBus and AMD AHCI Controller Driver - not delete - good drivers

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

Seems this problem is back after the 11.09 release:
>>11.09
>>...
>>Updated:
>>- AMD\1 AMD package from 8.881 package.

This probably re-introduced the filter-drivers removed in 11.04.1
>>11.04.1
>>Removed
>>- AMD\1\Filter AMD PCIE Filter Driver (reported here: http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=4516)

Ran into it on intel HW, causing the GFX to fail. The problem seems to be that the the filter driver matches hardware not from AMD.

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

Yes, I added it back into DriverPack Chipset thinking everything would be fine with the new drivers.
The problem is that in my organization we have nothing but HP machines with AMD chipsets (Phenom CPU) and this driver is needed for our systems.  So while it may cause problems for some Intel-based systems, it's needed for newer AMD systems.
What's the solution? I don't want to remove the filter drivers because I (and others) need them.
Can you confirm that the problem is solved when the \AMD\1\Filter\ folder is removed?  If that's the case, then I'll just update the changelog with the notice that those folders should be removed if integrating on Intel hardware.

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

perhaps there is a piece of HW that could commonly identify most modern intel chipsets such as a "Firmware Hub Device", a intel USB Universal Host Controller, etc. hmm

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

I can confirm that it works if you remove the AMD Filter folder...

I would think this could be fixed by including an updated driver from intel that better matches the intel HW, it that exists... (now it's using the RTM drivers from win7)

Re: Serious Problem with AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Chipset driver

OK, I'll remove them and add them to a Third Party DriverPack instead.

Well, the Intel drivers in 11.10 are the newest available and they're not RTM, they're final release.  From here:
