Topic: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

I found a few threads of people having problems with the DriverPacks Software, but nothing for if you had no problems there and are instead having problems during install..

BIOS and RAID Utility recognize my array as being present and healthy, but my install disc says I have no HDDs..

Here is my logfile from my most recent attempt (I've burned 3 discs and they all behave the same way..)

The HWID tool is no longer available from those links so I can't include that information..

Basically, I've used Driver Packs to slipstream drivers into the install, created an ISO through nlite, and when I attempt to install, I set my BIOS for RAID, like I said above, the BIOS and onboard RAID Utility recognize both drive and report the array as healthy, so I boot off the disc, it says it's loading all sorts of drivers, then tells me I don't have any HDDs and to press F3 to exit.

I tried hitting F6 while it's loading and it says I don't have a floppy drive.

I borrowed a FDD from my work's IT dept, but I don't think it's any good cause even during POST there is no sign of life (no led light and it never makes any sounds).

The Steps I took were from here:

http://users.telenet.be/jtdoom/basetute/Eng_tut6b.htm
http://teamtutorials.com/windows-tutori … LvW0-T87FI

Also I have tried slipstreaming with both method 1 and method 2, same results either way.

I'm hoping that I'm just making some stupid noob mistake and you guys can point it out, laugh at me and send me on my way..

I know you don't ask for this, but it should list all my hardware in place of that HWID file.. here's my dxdiag information (I cut off the DirectShow Filters because I had hit the post character limit..):

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

What if I install XP Pro on just one of the drives, then reboot and change the BIOS to use RAID... will it just take a minute to copy everything to the second drive and then from then on out function as  mirror?

I'm asking instead of taking a couple of hours to do it and then finding out it doesn't work that way.. hmm

I'm currently using my old 500gb drive and have 4 2tb drives sitting empty in my tower sad

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

Many USB floppy HWid's can be manually entered into txtsetup.sif:

add to TXTSETUP.SIF after line:
USB\VID_55AA&PID_1234 = "usbstor"

these:

USB\VID_03F0&PID_2001 = "usbstor"
USB\VID_054C&PID_002C = "usbstor"
USB\VID_057B&PID_0001 = "usbstor"
USB\VID_0409&PID_0040 = "usbstor"
USB\VID_0424&PID_0FDC = "usbstor"
USB\VID_08BD&PID_1100 = "usbstor"
USB\VID_055D&PID_2020 = "usbstor"

HWid's tool is linked in my sig. below.   Is it possible that nLite is corrupting your source?
How have you configured the RAID BIOS utility?

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

that could be entirely possible, I've never messed with RAID, nLite, or Driver Packs before.

Also, Unless I can use a Compact Flash card in a card reader, usb won't do me much good.. I haven't owned a thumb drive in who knows how long hmm

I was hoping I could do this all from DVD drive..

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

Use a "clean" XP-SP3 Pro source and add latest Chipset & MassStorage using DP_BASE.
Create your .ISO.
Burn to Disc, or USB media with Rufus, or similar.

If it works, you can more easily troubleshoot your current integration.

PS:  HWid's utility is in my signature below these words.  smile

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

I assume by "clean" you mean recopy the source disc to my HDD.. that seems pretty blatantly obvious, can't believe I didn't think of that step in trouble shooting..

here are the results from HWID:

Thanks for the quick replies, this has been driving me crazy since wednesday night..

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

still the same. BIOS and Utility say the array is there and healthy, Windows install says I have no HDDs.. hmm

I did use nLite to make the ISO, I didn't make any changes with nLite, just went straight to creating the image.

Do you think it would make a difference if I just tried creating the ISO using Nero Burning Rom ver. 9.4.17.0? That's what I've been using to burn the ISO after nLite creates it..

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

"[REQ] nForce Raid / PnP Interface Fix
Original title: [REQ] nForce Raid PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0550"

I see that there are some nV test packs http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=4742.
Yet, none of those drivers contain those HWid's, nor do they appear in the latest DP_MassStorage.

I wonder why this was never added.

I'm not making ANY promises (especially since i'm in way over my head here) as these drivers seem to involve "super-generic" HWid's.  hmm

I'm told that nLite corrupts the source.  Search this forum for proper context of that statement.
Integration with RVMi 1.6.1b2.1 previous to DP_BASE is ok.  That appears to support .Iso creation.
I build my test .Iso's with IMGburn (i install w. i'net disabled.  i don't ASK.com).
Take the shortest integration route for tests.

Grab your F6 disc, add the USB-Floppy HWid's as outlined earlier & ensure verification of files on floppy.  done.
Let us know which driver was successful, that it could be added.

see Fernando 1's topic for driver info:
3. "Special MCP65-67 nForce Driverpacks for XP 32/64bit"
possibly, it is relevant to note your RAID BIOS version.

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

unfortunately I don't have a FDD or I would have skipped all of this days ago and just ran the motherboard provided Floppy image.. sad

I'm kinda in over my head too and glancing over some of those links, it sounds like the RAID on this motherboard is a cheap POS and it will be much less hassle to just upgrade to 7 Pro, or replace the board..

Unless someone has a better idea, guess I'll wait until next payday and go that route.. hmm

Thanks for your help though, I really appreciate it!

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

nLite integration corrupts the source.

Creating the ISO with nLite is FINE big_smile.

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

I interpreted what TechDud was saying as meaning that the drivers for my on board RAID aren't in the DP database?

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

Not even in the NT6 packs.  There must be a reason for this.  Possibly, it is that "super-generic" thing; i think it possible that this driver "doesn't play well with others".

From the plethora of posts from mr_smartepants, i can deduce that this is not likely to be easy (understatement).  He would know best how to proceed.

Perhaps a solution may involve a new "3rd-party" pack with MassStorage drivers for this specific hardware, to be used in place of the main DP_MassStorage.

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

I went by a local pc shop and bought a floppy drive for $10... I'm with my 9-ball team right now, but i'll try it when i get home.. Hopefully this works.. I'd rather run 4tb RAID1 than 8tbwith no redundancy, but i'm at my patience's end now..

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

No problem at all, i realize that i'm the first to be the vocal about a motherboard that is at least 4 years old. I don't expect you to jump to my aid writing a bunch of crap.. If it was readily available, that's great, but since it isn't i'll make do smile

Hopefully the floppy drive i picked up today will solve my problem. I'll reportback either way:)

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

Alright, just got home and tried this second FDD.. without having any NGAs (Known Good Assets) I'm shooting in the dark.. This drive behaves like the other. no LED flashes on boot and no sounds.. I've enabled the floppy in BIOS and the power cord from the power supply is the same bit of cable that feeds my DVDR so I'm assuming it is getting power.. it's either a jumper not identified in the manual, or a bad ribbon cable..

Like I said, I don't anticipate you to make time in your schedule to suit one user, because obviously I'm the first one to complain about this.. if you can, that's awesome, if you can't don't worry about it. For now I'm just going to bide my time until I can afford a new motherboard (those CrossHair's look nice..) or upgrade to 7 Ultimate..

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

One-at-a-time, use each drive on individual non-RAID SATA, IDE CDrom & run the manufacturer's tools on each drive.  Run four systems to have the operation done fastest.
A complete zeroing of the drive often brings sectors "unreadable" due to power sag back to service.
Then a full "advanced" scan.  Some mfg. tools do this automatically after drive zeroing.
Time consuming, yes!  Effective, YES!

If you want to verify installation with the RAID driver & one drive, just select "JBOD" when you build your "new array" in the RAID BIOS.

Relay which version of RAID BIOS you have.  Sometimes an old mobo bios can stymie your efforts on install, BTW.
If your familiar with BIOS updates, OK.  If not, skip it; if it's done incorrectly, you can "brick" your hardware.  I say this for all audiences.

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

the HDDs are working fine, the work individually as Non-RAID, and they show up properly as an array in RAID mode.. the FDD won't respond..

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

Can your PC boot from USB?

or CD?

If you can boot from CD, do you have a second CD drive spare?

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

I haven't tried booting from USB, but it is an option in BIOS.. I don't have any thumbdrives though... I only have one optical drive..

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

Damn, I was going to suggest loading an image of the floppy you need into RAM with grub4dos. But that would need a USB drive or second optical Drive.

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

i don't think it would work... Windows Install will only check A: for the RAID drivers.. at least as far as I know..

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

grub4dos creates a virtual A: in RAM, it works, I've used it before

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

ahhh, then yeah, that'd be awesome if I had a second Optical drive, haha... I threw away so much hardware about 3 years ago.. was trying to stop being such a packrat... :eyeroll:

Re: Installing WinXP Pro on RAID (DP_Base_1006)

Have you got another PC that can read the floppy?
