Topic: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

Since I seem to have multiple problems with this install I'm not sure exactly where to post but this seems to be the mose relavent:

I am currently working on a Dell D400 and D630... I just used my latest slipstream which was integrated with the latest driver packs including 3rd party. The D400 went perfect ( I use Runoncex @ 987 and always run the ALPS seperately). When I tried the D630 I get a nvhotkey.dll failure along with a fingerprint software error... I am also completely confused about when and how to run the WAVE and TPM items.

I have spent a day on this and it's humbling me big time lol so any help would be appreciated...

Here are the HWID's:

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

That Quadro HWID is directly supported by DriverPack Graphics A 9.06 and the nvdm.inf is untouched from nvidia 185.85.
Odd.
Have you checked the hashes on the DriverPacks?
At what point in setup do you get the nvhotkey.dll failure?
Have you looked in setupapi.log for the specific error? (search for VEN_10DE&DEV_042B)

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

I'm new to troubleshooting this so thanks for the tips...

not sure how to check the hash marks yet but I'll figure it out and report back

I believe the error shows up at about runonceex 215 after my .net install... which really confuses me since I thought the drivers were done at 987

I searched the system for nvhotkey.dll and its not present

I searched the setup and found the info below: (I registered nvcuvenc.dll)

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

I just downloaded 185.85 from nVidia and after re-installing the error is gone and the nvhotkey.dll is in the system32 folder...

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

I forgot that I modified the nvdm.inf (and the other mobility .infs) to fix the installer bug introduced by Nvidia (bastards!) with 185.85.  That's why you see the "not signed" errors.
Strange that you get the error during ROE.  That shouldn't happen.  The drivers actually get installed between T-36 and T-34 of XP setup.  ROE 987 is when DriverPacks Finisher runs and it has nothing to do with installing drivers.  All DriverPacks Finisher does in execute any additional installers for control panels and the like.  DriverPack Graphics A\g\n1 has no installer entries for DriverPacks Finisher, only a single registry entry which can be safely ignored.

It's possible that there's other issues going on during first logon.

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

In all fairness I may be mistaken with the timing of the error because this beat me up pretty good and I was tired... it also took an extremely long time during each install test and I am doing it on a new drive in my working laptop so the time issue and just watching the install is a pain for me...

my XPSP3 is a slipstream that seems to work perfect on all my VM testing before I do the DriverPack and even wih the driver pack it installed perfect on a D400 so I'm not sure what to look for. Should I try to make a custom pack with just the video driver and see what happens?

This is my RunOnceEX: (the Dell items only get added if I include a custom dell folder and the same for all the other "if exist" items)

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

Well this is interesting.  Notice this entry in the nvdm.inf

[nv_CplInstaller_addreg]
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run",NvCplDaemon,%REG_SZ%,"RUNDLL32.EXE %11%\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup"
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run",NVHotkey,,"rundll32.exe nvHotkey.dll,Start"

Notice that the reg entry "Run" for nvhotkey is missing the directory (%11%) that contains it, like the line above it?  It should read:

[nv_CplInstaller_addreg]
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run",NVHotkey,,"rundll32.exe %11%\nvHotkey.dll,Start"

But why this doesn't fail on your other notebook is beyond me.  What HWID does it have?
Incidentally, nvdm.inf is the ONLY .inf that contains that reg entry.
Can you unpack DriverPack Graphics A, edit nvdm.inf to correct that line, repack and retest?

Sorry for your lack of sleep. smile

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

Awesome find on your part... I will make the corrections now and then try it and get right back...

EDIT:

The install isn't finished yet but unfortunately it failed again... but I got some sleep so I can provide more accurate info :-)

the message first pops up during the GUI - installing devices - with 34 minutes left to complete. I hit OK and am watching the rest of the install. It definitely happens before the network install. I will doublke check that I made the corrections properly and report back when it's done.

Let me know if their is anything you want me to check....

PS- below is the info of the Dell D400 which installed fine:

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

I checked the setupapi.log and the same dll failed: nvcuvenc.dll but nothing else seems different...

the corrections we made are:

HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run",NvCplDaemon,%REG_SZ%,"RUNDLL32.EXE %11%\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup"
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run",NVHotkey,,"rundll32.exe %11%\nvHotkey.dll,Start"

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

Well I tried one more thing and I failed at that also lol... I tried to make my own 3rd party pack with the drivers that I backedup from a previously corrected install but no luck.. in fact it's even worse since it's now VGA... I got the following error in the setup log:

Error:
c:\d\3\j\d630\vid\NvCplSetupInt.exe was not copied to D:\NvCplSetupInt.exe because of the following error:
The system cannot find message text for message number 0xe0000233 in the message file for syssetup.dll.

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

I don't know why nvcuvenc.dll is failing.  I can't spot anything out of the ordinary and all the entries are the same as nv4_disp.inf (which is what my card uses.

You've found the NvCplSetupInt bug I fixed. smile  You have to change one of the destinationdir from 01 to 11 to fix that copy bug.  Nvidia really needs to do their homework with their .infs!  Lately they're garbage.

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

Thanks for hanging in there with me... this is really stumping me...

When I use the Graphics A pack with the correction to the nvHotkey.dll inf entry I still get the nvHotkey.dll failure

When I use a pack I try and make myself I fail with a VGA new hardware found popup and a VGA display... also the NvCplSetupInt copy error.

Should I try a custom pack with your corrected inf from the pack?

If I use the drivers from a backup it doesn't even show nvHotkey.dll in the folder so how would it be installed?

If I use a custom pack do I still select the A pack to get the control panels to install?

I downloaded and installed the driver manually so I am stumped why it works that way and not our way

I am going to try and copy the nvHotkey.dll to the system32 folder and register it to see if everything else is OK and it is only a copy of the file issue

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

If you download the standard nvidia drivers, then extract them to a folder and run setup.exe they'll work fine.  But if you go through device manager and click "update driver" using the "have disk" method those same drivers will fail.  Nvidia designed them that way I guess.  Your guess is as good as mine.  Hopefully nvidia will release some drivers that actually work soon.

Incidentally, I have two D630 notebooks at work that I need to re-image and neither have nvidia chipsets.  Odd neutral

The nvidia video is an upgrade option and out of 30 systems we have I have the only one with it... so what I have found is that with the exception of the ALPS pad which never installs on any of the numerous Dell laptops we have... the driver pack works for the D630 with just the intel video.

I decided to try a somewhat "juryrig" fix but I have now tried it 2x and it works perfect:

I copy nvhotkey.dll to D:\$OEM$\$$\System32 on my CD and I run a reg_nvcuvenc.dll.cmd during my runonceex... this simply makes sure that nvhotkey.dll is there during install and addresses the one other error that I found it the setupapi.log

I know this defeats the basic principal of a single standard disk for installs but until there is a real fix having a custom but working CD for the D630 model is fine with me.

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

You could try adding a line to the DriverPacks Finisher .ini to do that work for you. wink
I'm not sure of the contents of your cmd file, but DriverPacks Finisher can do some of it for you.

exc_1_commands    = 3
exc_1_command1  = "regedit /s %systemdrive%\nvidia.ins"
exc_1_command2  = "cmd.exe /c DEL /F /S /Q %SystemDrive%\nvidia.ins"
exc_1_command3  = "cmd.exe /c copy /y %DPSROOT%\D\G\N1\nvhotkey.dll %SystemRoot%\system32"

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

Has there been any further progress on this?  I too am trying to install on a Dell D630c and I'm having the exact same problem.  It seems that the file nvHotkey.dll just doesn't copy to the system32 directory.  I guess I'll just implement the fix above posted by mr_smartepants?  Any other comments or things I should try?

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

sorry we have had no feedback on this...

mr_smartepants fix should be valid... (but the alps pad is not a video driver so don't look for it to be added wink)

You could post your results to save someone else who may wander in here wink

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

Hopefully, the latest nightly fixes this with the move to 190.62 drivers.
I'm working on a DriverPack Graphics A 909beta (just a cleaned-up nightly) to upload in the next few days.

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

em..yeah. I may be dumb, but why is it necessary to update drivers to newer versions, which seems to be crap. If the older driver version is OK and newer version fails, then why bother making "bread of s***". If nvidia makes bad drivers, thats their problem (or not?)

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

While that may be true of other drivers, graphics drivers are one area where users may actually see performance and stability improvements.
Sometimes this is not the case.

And no, you're not dumb.  That's a pretty insightful statement. wink

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

I was looking at the nightly and noticed that there isn't a nvhotkey.dll file anymore, so I guess the lastest driver can't have this specific problem.  wink

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

Sorry for the lack of follow-up on the problem but rigth at the time I was testing this work really kicked in heavy which included a few weeks of travel so it wasn't possible for me to address this. With that said I am going to try and do a set of installs on the same D630 and a new E6500 this weekend. I will report back my findings.

Slightly off topic: I have a client that uses lots of different model Dell laptops and desktops and I realized that I may be able to supply some decent feedback to the forum if I teach one of my guys to monitor the driverpack installs and run the HWID for any problem items he notices. I am working on this now and will hopefully start training him next week. I would very much like to give back to this forum for all the help you provide us.

Re: [SLVD] D630 Multiple Problems

Just reporting that the latest nightly seems to work fine for me without having the problem in this thread.  Thanks!
