Topic: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

Hi,
I created a UBCD4WIN 3.22 boot cd using XP SP2 as source and DriverPacks Base 8.05 + the DP_MassStorage_wnt5_x86-32_901.7z MassStorage DriverPack file only ("DriverPack MassStorage text mode" selected), but the following 2 RAID controllers in 2 different servers were not recognised (no hard disks were found):

- Promise FastTrak S150 SX4 controller on a Fujitsu-Siemens FibreCAT N20i (D1979) - 4 SATA HDDs in a single RAID-5 array - 1st boot logical disk - 2nd non-boot logical disk

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

Hi, the driver used by IBM ServeRAID 6M controller is an LSI controller located in the L10 folder. This driver was downgraded in our latest test pack because the newer driver is not signed which probably is the cause of your issue.

Hi JakeLD,
So what can I do to fix this? Will you release a fixed MassStorage driverpack?

Sure there will be an update this week, not official but Ill give you a link for you to test pack only if you report back! big_smile

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

Hi JakeLD,
unfortunately no joy. Let me know how I could check if I did mistakes in the build (i.e. which drivers I have to check, their filename/version and so on).
Also, any work in progress regarding Promise FastTrak S150 SX4 ?
Thank you.

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

I need more details in order to help you. I also suggest you try with the latest version of Base, 8.12.4. For the drivers version, please look at the changelog which is included in the pack itself.

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

I can see in the plugin\DriverPacks.net\MassStorage\w2k3 folder in my build that the LSI_SCSI.SY file is of 45,9 KB - 47.067 byte (although as I wrote I'm building from a XP source, I don't know if it's important), but with previous versions of UBCD4WIN I successfully used different drivers for the IBM ServerRaid 6M scsi controller, not the LSI you mentioned from the L10 folder. They are produced by Ibm, so should be reliable.
If you want, tell me how I can send you those drivers. They work for IBM ServeRAID 4M/4L/4Mx/4Lx/5i/6M/6i/7k Controller (Windows 2000/XP)  and IBM ServeRAID 3L/3H/4H Controller (Windows 2003).
Regarding the Promise FastTrak S150 SX4, in my first post I posted what reported by the HWID's tool. Do you need more info? Let me know. Even for this controller, I have Promise drivers which successfully loaded in old UBCD4WIN builds.
If you want, please tell me how to integrate those driver in my build, so I can try myself and report to you.
Thank you.

Edoardo.

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

@JakeLD:  Here is the IBM page where you could download the IBM driver for ServeRAID 6m.  I thought that I would lend a quick hand by giving the link.  The date for the 2000/XP driver is 08-30-2004.

JakeLD,
this is the link for the Promise FastTrak S150 SX4 Windows drivers:

If possible, please include them and the previously posted Ibm ServerRaid 6m Windows drivers into a new MassStorage DriverPack.
Thank you.

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

I'll see what I can do but this is far more complicated then just adding the 2 drivers. I will explain later.

This driver is already included, a simple search would have gave you the answer.

Also please make sure that your BIOS and firmware controller are updated.

IBM 6M use  Firmware level 7.10 for the ServeRAID-7k, ServeRAID-6M,
ServeRAID-6i/6i+, and ServeRAID-5i Ultra320 SCSI Controllers

PCI\VEN_1000&DEV_0030 for XP use the driver in L8 folder which is not signed. That might be the problem. I will replace this one with a signed one asap.

Also try with XP Sp3 or 2003 SP2 as source. I don't understand why you are using an old service pack anyway. Don't you have enough problems already ?

I also noticed PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_0571 which is a via controller, that specific controller is supported by XP SP3 and not by SP2. That's why we are using the switch replace in the INI file. So using XP SP3 as source sounds like a good idea.

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

You could also try to integrate that plugin into your PE

My fault, the driver is there, but unfortunately that controller isn't discovered.

JakeLD wrote:

Thanks for the suggestion, this is next step I will try: I reminded that 3 months ago the Promise FastTrak S150 SX4 controller was replaced and now also my old UBCD4WIN 3.04 boot disk is not able anymore to discover the controller and disks... Very odd.

Ok, let me know when I could try it.

Done with Xp SP3, nothing changes. I didn't try that before because it seems to me that SP2 is still the suggested SP to use with UBCD4WIN to have a stable boot disk.

Done, but testing the build on a VM I have the following BSOD:

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

There is no signed LSI driver on LSI website to replace the existing one in the L8 folder. It's important to have a signed driver when there is conflicting hwids, for XP there is not so it should be fine.

Have you tried the latest base http://driverpacks.sytes.net/driverpack … _90201.exe ?

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

Probably it's due to my poor experience, but I don't understand.
I do not have disks attached to the LSI on-board RAID controller PCI\VEN_1000&DEV_0030 of my IBM servers. As I wrote on my first post, is the IBM ServerRaid 6M controller (PCI\VEN_9005&DEV_0250&SUBSYS_02791014&REV_02\4&8C37DC5&0&4010) which isn't discovered with its disks. Is it important to update L8/L10 LSI drivers to discover the IBM controller?
And no, I didn't try the latest Base yet, but if you think it could be of any help I will do so.

I updated to UBCD4WIN 3.50, WinXpSP3 as source, Base 8.12.4, MassStorage DP 9.03r1.

1. Promise FastTrak S150 SX4: I updated the SCSI controller BIOS to the 2.0.70.24 version as suggested, but UBCD4WIN doesn't find any disk. In the Hardware Management snap-in, I can see from the HWID the Promise controller listed as an Unknown "RAID device".
The RAID 1 array is hardware-based.

2. IBM ServeRAID 6M: the RAID 1 array is software-based (W2k3) with 2 dynamic disks.
Windows shows the mirrored volume in a healthy status.
UBCD4WIN's instead shows in the the Disk Management snap-in a failed mirrored volume (red cross) with no drive letter associated and 2 active disks. I can't assign a drive letter to the voume, only remove the mirror (I didn't try this operation). UBCD4WIN's Hardware management snap-in shows 2 "Ibm ServeRaid Scsi Disk device" and the Ibm ServeRaid controller listed as unknown "RAID controller" (recognised from the HWID).
If I boot the same UBCD4WIN disk on a xseries 445 server with disks attached on the onboard dual LSI controller and HW mirror, all is OK, so the LSI driver shouldn't be an issue.
From my previous UBCD4WIN 3.04 disk (which is able to see those software-mirrored disks) I noticed that the Virtual Disk Service is running: the 3.50 one instead has it stopped and it can't be started because the x:\i386\system32\vds.exe file is missing. Could it be the cause of my issue?

3. I read at http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=3690 about both Promise fastsx.sys and Ibm nfrd960.sys: could that issue being in same way related to mine?

Thank you

Edoardo

Does XP contains vds.exe? What about 2003 source files?

Well I don't pocess a FastTrak S150 SX4, can't test and can't answer that.
As for a possible driver conflicts:
Create a testing UBCD4WIN, include as less mass storage drivers as possible, add Promise FastTrak S150 SX4 only.

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

Ibm ServeRaid 6m: building also with W2k3Sp2 as source solved the issue: the Virtual Disk Service starts and I can read the mirrored volume. So the combination of Ubcd4win 3.50, Base 8.12.4 and MassStorage DP 9.03.r1 is OK.

Promise FastTrak S150 SX4:even with W2k3Sp2 as source, the attached disks aren't found as previously reported using WinXpSp3. In the boot disk System event log, I have the following errors:
- Source fastsxk3, Event Id 4, Description: "The description for Event ID ( 4 ) in Source (fastsxk3) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event."
- Source Application Popup, Event Id 877, Description:" There was error [DATABASE NOT LOADED] processing the driver database"

Regarding the suggested test of creating a UBCD4WIN disk with only Promise FastTrak S150 SX4 drivers, what should be the procedure?

This event log message reminds to PnpInterface at nvgst.sys.

Strange:
Promise txtsetup.oem dosn't set PnpInterface.
And fastsy.inf does set PnpInterface.

There are used different driver names: fastsx.sys and fastsxk3.sys.
Adjust previous plugin.

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/help/english/drivers.htm
However, this won't include PnpInterface. Most likely this won't solve the problem.
Try the above plugin first.

Refers to Windows mode...
In UBCD4Win we are in textmode...
so the two things are not directly related
Additionaly a service that is not running will certainly not cause any issues wink...
Just because a registry entry exists does not mean it is used/loaded.

@cdob
Good catch on the PNP interface!
- I think that is a win...

Sorry for the delay in my answwer: unfortunately disks aren't still detected, even with this plugin and I can still read in the UBCD4WIN system event log the same error event id 4, source FastSxK3.
I checked regedit and both "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FastSxK3\Parameters\PnpInterface" and "HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\FastSxK3\Parameters\PnpInterface" contain the "5" value set to 0x1.

Thank you all for any help.

Re: [SLV] Promise S150 SX4, IBM ServeRAID 6M

As suggested, I tried also creating an UBCD4WIN 3.50 (W2k3Sp2 - Base 8.12.4) with disabled MassStorage plugin and adding only Promise FastTrak S150 SX4 Windows drivers ver. 05/20/2004, 2.00.00.25: still no disks are detected.
What else could I try? Any help appreciated.
