Topic: [SLVD] Graphics C 8.10.2 - Geforce4 MX 440 Problem

I reloaded Windows on this machine that has a Geforce4 MX 440 card, and when I booted up the machine it had the standard
(Microsoft) driver loaded.  I use KTD so I updated the driver manually to the driver located at in C:\WINDOWS\DriverPacks\G\N3 The driver wasn't signed but I continued anyway, and when it rebooted I thought everything was fine because the tray icon loaded fine and when I checked device manager the driver version was updated to 7.1.8.9.  I tried changing the resolution and the machine just reset instantly.  I disabled automatic restart on system failure (then rebooted once) and tried again, but it still instantly reboots the machine.

I downloaded forceware 93.71 from nvidia.com
Driver version in device manager is 6.14.10.9371 and it works fine so I'm not really what the problem is.  Below are my hwids, and I hope someone could shed some light on the issue.

I'm sorry if I'm just bad at searching, but is there a reason we can't get to the 9371 driver instead of 7189?

Thanks for everything guys.

Re: [SLVD] Graphics C 8.10.2 - Geforce4 MX 440 Problem

Dont you have an old AGP video card laying around collecting dust to save this person?

those 440mx were gimped...

lets see your base log ( since the details were a little lite...)

like which CP you chose
Which base version you used
Which pack versions you used
Which method you used (1, 2, SAD)
What OS your installing
What Service pack is the OS
any other updates (RyanM/Seraby/nLite)
Does this happen every time or just once (is it reproduceable)

thanks for the HWID's...

waiting for the DPs_BASE.log...
which will have most of the omitted info listed above
(Please RE-READ  Read BEFORE you post! in my signature) TIA

Re: [SLVD] Graphics C 8.10.2 - Geforce4 MX 440 Problem

Haha, yeah this graphics card is a pile, but it's an older machine so I don't care.  Just to make sure nothing else was interfering this is just my plain XP Pro OEM disk, with nothing added besides DP_Graphics_B_wnt5_x86-32_810.7z  and the problem still occurs every time.  Just like I said in the first post, if I force the unsigned driver in the C:\Windows\DriverPacks\G\N3 folder it loads fine, but changing the resolution always causes an instant restart.   Here's whats in my DPs_BASE.log for this integration.  I'll test the nightly that mr_smartpants posted the same way I tested this one and let you know what happens.

Re: [SLVD] Graphics C 8.10.2 - Geforce4 MX 440 Problem

Alright I just got done performing the same exact install as before but this time using only the nightly that mr_smartpants posted, and the driver  also wouldn't load during the standard Windows install.  It just doesn't want to eat the unsigned driver when the one native to XP is signed.  With this driver I was able to update the driver to the unsigned driver in C:\Windows\DriverPacks\G\N3 folder and change resolutions without a problem though.  Is there anything else I can do to help you guys?

Can you post a {sanitized} copy of your winnt.sif?  I'd love to see if driversigning was disabled.

What functionality do you give up if the native driver is used?

Re: [SLVD] Graphics C 8.10.2 - Geforce4 MX 440 Problem

Damn, I really didn't think the driver-signing would be that big a deal.  The original signed .inf is relabeled nv4_dispinf.bak, just delete the current nv4_disp.inf and relabel the .bak file to nv4_disp.inf to restore signing.

What functionality do you give up if the native driver is used?

I can't seem to get the s-video out on the card to work without the nvidia version of the driver...

I'll see what happens when I modify the infs as mr_smartpants suggests.

Re: [SLVD] Graphics C 8.10.2 - Geforce4 MX 440 Problem

After altering the driverpack to have the signed copy of nv4_disp.inf as suggested by mr_smartepants, the 93.71 driver in the nightly driverpack worked perfectly.  I downloaded an archived copy of 7.1.8.9 and tried the same thing, and Windows loaded the driver just fine during the install, but I still couldn't change resolutions, so I'm assuming that was just a flaw between this MX 440 and that particular driver, but I don't know.  If I can be of any more assistance please let me know.  Thanks for your time guys.

OK, so I need feedback now.
Our options are these:
1) All 3 graphics DriverPacks have zero HWID overlap but driversigning is broken.
2) Driversigning is preserved for all 3 DriverPacks but they have significant HWID overlap which may cause conflicts.

Re: [SLVD] Graphics C 8.10.2 - Geforce4 MX 440 Problem

not a new problem smile

I say don't break signing unless we are forced to...

If PnP works as designed then the proper driver should win out over a similar driver with similar or possably even identical HWID's
Obviously we don't live in that world... so let's shoot for the moon... and then break signing on a as needed basis...
if we are trying to replace a native driver we MUST do it with a signed driver
- or at least that is the result we see reported quite often
- thinking out loud... this may be the cause of certain BSOD @ winpe (the 7B)...
mass storage signing becomes a factor at PE

We should make a note of the reason when we break signing...
although i dont know where the best place to record such info would be...
perhaps in teh deited copy of the INF? - perhaps on the forum? - something else i have not thoujght of???
