Topic: [SLV] UBCD4WIN not recognizing ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE

I built and ran the latest UBCD4Win, version 3.20, yesterday, and was astounded that though it recognized and accessed my C: partition fine (standard NTFS), it couldn't recognize my D: partition (standard FAT32).  It said the D: volume was of unknown type.  These are two partitions on one 30 GB IDE drive.  This UBCD4Win was built with XP with SP2.

Now, this was partitioned with a standard FDISK, DOS/Win98 version I believe, to create D: in an extended partition with a logical DOS drive.  These style of partitions have been used forever and are recognized by DOS, Win95, Win98, WinME, and WinXP with and without service packs.  This is on a fairly old IBM Thinkpad laptop with a Celeron CPU.   My older UBCD4Win has always recognized these partitons fine; it is UBCD4WinV25 with UBCD4WinDriversV12, and was built with XP with SP1a.

welcome to the forum GnEE...

Obviously your HDD was detected properly or you would not have access to the drive at all...
Logicaly you should have relized this is not a DriverPacks issue since the HDD was accessable.
put another way, file system access is OS related not driver related
you need to do a search on UBCD4Win for fat32 support, and post there for support...
UBCD4Win does support fat32 so you must have an issue with your build...

so not only did you post this in the wrong forum at DriverPacks (mass storage instead of UBCD4Win)
you also posted it on the wrong website... wink

Gee, and I almost posted to UBCD4Win, but it sounded like a driver issue.

there are pictures in the tutorial in my signature
when i wrote the mass storage plugin i also included the tutorial with DriverPacks BASE
and the tutorial is available if you hit the help button in pebuilder.

there are two entrys shown in figure 3

first is DriverPacks BASE the DriverPacks main executable - it is only here to configure plugins it is not a plugin itself so it CANNOT be disabled because it is not 'enable'able (its an exe not an inf and is ignored by the actual build process it is only here for the end user)

Second is the actual mass storage plugin this can be disabled (or enabled)

a simple check of your build log will verify this.... if youre still not convinced just drag the DriverPacks.net folder out of the plugins folder (Then they will both be 'gone'. {even better than disabled} At least until you drag it back)

but i bet a nickle, it ain't the driver wink

PS it seems obvious to me that the best way to disable a 'plug-in' is to 'un-plug' it  wink
PSS The link they sent you to is valid for adding your "Known Good" driver.

I could not think of a reason in hardware (int 13 and 19) where a partition (w/i keyword here) is not shown on a drive in UBCD4win.

My personal gutfeeling is there was a virtual CD drive letter embedded in mbr and ebmr of disk 0.

The answer was 42?

oops, did you have more than foure drive letters?

fdiks cmbr /2 can throw an error (1876 or something like it.. my memory is poor)

go to dos, and do fdisk /cmbr 2

Warning
whatever was on HDD2 and had same erroneously designated letter may now be missing

advice
never change boot records and extended partition table if you cannot afford to lose data

what to do if data is not to be lost.
remove / disconect all; bring in a spare

now the fun part, helix, ubcd4win and other off line
do you realise that a faulty mobo (controller or south bridge) can have you go thru all what I went thru, and what you did?

that a north bridge is a lot easier to find fault in?

I appreciate your input, Jaak.  This is all happening on an old IBM Thinkpad Celeron laptop.  There is only one hard drive.  It has two partitions on it, and both partitions show up in UBCD4Win; one says volume C: Type NTFS, the other says volume D: Type Unknown.

OverFlow, I found your tutorial, thanks.  I'll try to make a UBCD4Win without DriverPacks MassStorage driver and see how it works.  Ya know, there is a lot to this UBCD4Win, I'll try not to mess it all up.

based on the age and type of machine standard IDE drivers apply
IE you don't need a driver your HDD is natively supported by the OS.
controller type = Standard IDE

I belive that you can skip the adding a driver step. you should just be able to disable the DriverPacks plugin and still be able to see the HDD useing only XP's included drivers.

PS We don't replace native drivers we supplement them. so the driver you are useing in this stinkpad is most likely the XP driver and not a DriverPacks driver at all... wink

I believe you are right, OverFlow.  I disabled the DriverPacks MassStorage drivers in UBCD4Win, created a new ISO, booted it, and it now finds and understands the FAT32 D: partition on my laptop.  So what does that mean, if anything?  Perhaps the Win XP running on UBCD4Win is choosing the wrong driver?  Or the right driver, but the wrong . . something else?

OK...

PCI\VEN_10B9&DEV_5229 is a match for a native windows driver
SP3 = ALIIDE.SY_ in the I386 folder... ALi Corporation 2002  v1.51
SP2 = ALIIDE.SY_ in the I386 folder... Acer Laboratories Inc. 2000 v1.20

We do include an upgrade for this driver
ALIIDE.SYS  2002 ALi Coporation. DriverVer = 03/06/2003, 1.5.1.0

I guess we missed the fact that SP3 includes this driver now, and it doesn't need to be replaced. (if SP3 source)
However since we are "replaceing" it with the exact same driver it 'shouldn't' cause an issue...
the possability exists that the driver in the packs is slightly corrupted or that something in the windows native driver has been tweaked by MS... IDK. Either way we are eliminateing things it is not...

So it appears that i owe you at least 2.5 cents... it is a windows problem and a DriverPacks problem...

if you desire you may extract the mass pack and...
remove the [AU] section from the mass storage ini
Repack with 7zip...
use the base plugin to 'config' your new mass storage pack from pebuilder.
build and test... i think your problem is gone... wink

This driver should be removed from the INI since our current version is the same as the XP sp3 version.
If Someone slipstreams XP sp2 the native text mode driver should work and it should still be upgraded to the newer version during PnP setup. a win, win scenario if i am correct.
- IE i think we need it for windows but not for text mode so just pull the ini entry and leave the driver wink

this may apply to other drivers in teh mass storage pack too.
IE we may see somthing similar to this again...
there are only a few bus extenders like this one, is it related to that... i think yes... wink big_smile tongue

Well, I do not fully understand everything that goes on.  So I need to unpack the DriverPack, do the edit you mentioned, repack with 7zip, and config; I cannot go into my UBCD4Win project directory, where the drivers seem to already be sitting in the folder plugins\DriverPacks.net\MassStorage\Winxp  ?  (BTW, \Winxp does not contain the aliide.sy_ file).  If not, then I'll give it a try.  What is the MassStorage.sif file sitting in plugin\DriverPacks.net\ ?  Oddly, it contains an entry for aliide.sys.

there is a much more complicated way i could explain to you to do it manually
that would take pages of instructions wink

the above is straight forward and a 123 process (as it was designed to be)
Try the easy way first.

perhaps copy the current folder so you can compare them after. wink
if you really want the nuts and bolts of it - I will - be careful what you wish for wink

PS if you are looking for a simple plugin to learn the ropes with... This ain't it.

The contents of MassStorage.sif get appended to TXTSETUP.SIF in the build process to overcome a limitation of pebuilder, which provide the additional sub-sections required to support certain driver types.

OverFlow's instructions for removing the ALI IDE driver from the DriverPacks MassStorage inf file were good, and as a result my new UBCD4Win now properly recognizes my hard drive and all the partitions on it.  Thanks to all involved for your help.

We might be able to avoid this or a similar situation in the future with that answer
I am still hopeing the UBCD4Win Guru's will provide more info as to the 'why'...
