JakeLD thanks for the update you need to remove this file in the R/2 directory. HDXSamsu.INF this is a X64 inf and is not needed just a heads up probably doesn't matter if it's there but I think it should be removed.

Hi,
link to older sound B nightly removed.
Sound B, initial notes.
Some drivers have more than one INF file.
A few of those INF files are obsolete so they were deleted.
These INF files were removed
S\A aliOEM8T removed
M\1 MaRevo.inf removed
SM\E (smwdmCH5.inf removed)
SM\F\1 (smwdmCH4.inf REMOVED)
S\T\5 (MXR6Fire.INF removed)
Some drivers were completely covered by other (same or newer) drivers, and were removed.
I removed
SM\D\1
SM\G\2
SM\G\4
SM\G\5
SM\G\6
SM\H\1
SM\Z\3
S\S (driver in root removed)
S\S\T
T\1
T\5 (and INI section) removed
INF "pruning".
More than fifty INF files have had PCI HWIDs pruned from them.
I made notes, and also have my Excell worksheets.
A rough count tells me I pruned about 900 duplicated HWIDs out of the pack.

Hi,
Jaak excellent work I will test later this even I have one question I notice that the \D\S\SM\A\3\O is still there and it is the only folder that contains the HWID for the Asus board I listed (PCI\VEN_1039&DEV_7012&SUBSYS_810D1043) will the driver still be found if it is in that folder?
Thanks again,
dolivas
yes.
Hi Jaak,
Sorry to report is still has not fixed the soundmax driver problem on the Asus P5PE-VM motherboard. it is still installing the VIA Vinyl AC`97 Codec Combo Driver.
I did some more research to see if I could find out what is still causing it to choose the wrong driver the correct Hwid is in the new test pack. Here is what I found in the DPFinsher log (2007-11-04 04:22:27 : <FLTR> Matched +infFile"C:\D\S\V\2\VinylCmp.inf" through the HWID "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24D5" (original HWID: "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24D5&SUBSYS_82271043&REV_02"). As you can see it is stopping at the DEV_24D5 and never looking at the SUBSYS_8227104 After looking more at this that file is in the Sound A pack and if you look at the VinylCmp.inf in that pack you will see it never looks for a SUBSYS I think this is what is causing all the problems with the soundmax and other drivers. Here is whats listed in the VinylCmp.inf file as you can see these DEV ID's are for more than just the VIA audio. I don't see how this can work the way it is with out looking at the SUBSYS it's late maybe I am lost on all of this let me know what you think and thanks for sticking with this.

Hi
that's a good find.
I had not combined A and B when I looked for competing generics.
Hi Jaak,
Finally some good news the driver installed correctly for the fist time when I did not include Sound A driver pack.... I noticed that it does not install the SoundMAX Control Panel I also do not see it listed in the main ini file for driver pack B is that something you can do I looked it over but I don't really know how to add it to the ini. What are you going to do with the duplicates in Sound A with Sound B ? Let me know if I can help in any way. I am still trying to learn how the packs are configured sorry I can't help more but I sure hope my testing is helping you.
Thanks again,

It seems that your HWID has been founded by 4 sound drivers. I think that windows selects by date of the drivers, but if the driver is not trusted, it selects the following. In your case, has selected vinyl because is newer and also is trusted. if you want to install the SoundMax, you must comment the other lines in which your HWID has been founded.

Major I understand that but that really is not the solution to this problem for one thing the vinyl is not even the correct driver and if that was the case about commenting out the other HWID's I would have to remove the complete Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver. If you look at the HWID's in the sound pack A there really is a problem there if I do not use the sound A pack all is fine. The work Jaak has done so far on the sound B pack is excellent and seems to have fixed other problems I was having with other boards now we need to do some cleanup on the sound A pack. I can't believe more people are not having problems with the sound packs in my opinion there is no way Sound A should be looking for the HWID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24D5 all by itself as it matches way to many HWID's from VIA, SoundMAX and others. Can someone explain to me why we would not also be looking for the SUBSYS info is there a reason the vinyl AC`97 Codec Combo Driver is only looking for the VEN and DEV ID's
Thanks,
dolivas
Hi
I see it like this.
Some drivers have generic HWIDs in them.
When a competing 'generic' HWID (without subsys) is also found in newer (but wrong) driver, the 'specific' (subsys info is present) loses out.
OverFlow had a problem with Sound-A in VM-Ware, where a wrong generic would win over a windows native driver.
(A generic for ensonique and creative are same. Ensonique was bought by creative.)
He told me that was fixed in the previous releases.
That was done by a looking at generics. We had just discovered the usefulness of Spotlight utility.
This was how I saw the immense list of duplicates for the first time.
> edit> hehe, I made the same comment. It's amazing to see so few problems reported when there was such a huge list of competing drivers across devices from different manufactors.
In Mass Storage, this would lead to BSOD, and that was where I put most efforts in.
Oh, Nvidia and Intel are at times very confusing. (Intel's 8086 ID is found everywhere in sound as well).
I'll start work on sound A soon.
I'll first look at competing generic ID's.
------
I started looking at sound A by its own sweet self..
There are competing generic in Nvidia and Via vinyl.
I disabled the duplicated generic HWIDs in both.
The generic left in A have no duplicates in A.
(I know B will have competing generic)
There are a LOT of duplicate subsys all over realtek drivers and Via.
(VIA is easy to spot in the realtek INFs, but realtek do have unique HWIDs for VIA.. That's the strangest part..).
The version INFo across these vendors is of little help.
I think I'll leave that alone for now.
There are a LOT of duplicate subsys across Nvidia and realtek.
Realtek is newer by more than a year.. So I disabled the nvidia duplicated subsys.
-
I figure there are a few drivers in sound A which make drivers in B completely obsolete.

Jaak
Thanks for taking the time to try and fix this if you look back at the sound forum post you will see several people had posted problems with the sound packs causing BSOD here is a post I had posted a while ago. http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=1794 Now here is the thing we used to see all kinds of BSOD with the sound packs until the generic sound drivers were added what happened for me was the install would now complete but installed the wrong sound drivers that is why I decided to try and help. Let me know when you have the sound packs ready to test again.
Thanks,
dolivas
Hi,
after screening it against sound A, a pruned sound B pack was put up for testing

Sound A will be ready soon.

Hi Jaak,
I will wait for sound A to run the test again seeing how that is what was causing my problems. Once sound A is ready I will run the test with both packs to make sure the packs can work together.
dolivas
Hi
it would surprise me if it went without error for all, because most of the work is done by hand.
old nightly MD5 hash =

pruned approx 900 in session 1 (b)
and approx 1000 in session 2 (a+b)
Jeesh.

duplicate HWID "pruning".
More than 60 INF files have had PCI HWIDs pruned from them.
I made notes, and also have my Excell worksheets.
A rough count; I pruned about 1300 duplicated HWIDs out of the B pack.
Well, after pruning 900 or so from sound B, I looked for duplicated HWIDs across Sound-A and sound-B and found a LOT more.
For A+B, we have approx 2050 HWID lines less than before the pruning of duplicated HWIDs.

nice work guys .... way to work together.
All info for all. It works.

What works for SYSprep, works in disc install.
I would not have spent my time on it if it doesn't help all.
November will be remembered.

Hi Jaak,
I did another fresh install with the SOUND A and B 7.11.03 nightlies and once again it installed the correct driver. I do have one problem and I am not sure what is causing it I get this error when I run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DirectSound test results: Failure at step 10 (Secondary buffer): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure) I decided to remove the drivers that the DP installed and installed the drivers that Asus provides they were the same as what is in the DP I checked the file hashes and they matched. Once the drivers where installed with the setup program which also installs the SoundMAX Control Panel I retested the system again with the dxdiag tool and this time all test pass? I know I asked before about getting the driver to also install the control panel but don't know if you ever seen the question is it possible? If not that is fine the driver is at least installing now..... What do you think is causing the error with the dxdiag?
Here is the info from the current setupapi.log file. I thought it might be good to see it.

the control panel can be installed with driverpacks.
it simply requires an entry added to the sound B INI to install the control panel.
the finisher will copy files or even run a setup program when specified in the DriverPack_Sound_B_wnt5_x86-32.ini file
If i read this thread correctly you are getting the sound driver installed from d\s\sm\a\3\ ?
There is no control panel file in that folder so it would also have to be included there first.
It is also interesting to note that this drivers signing is broken
