Topic: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

Hi,

Sorry for the cryptic subject line, but I wanted to include as much specific information as possible for future searches within the 70-character limit.

I had trouble with DriverPacks Mass Storage 11.08 bluescreening (STOP 0x0000007B) as text mode setup tried to start, on a Toshiba Tecra R850 laptop which uses an Intel ICH10(?) storage controller with the PCIID of 8086:1c03.

Interestingly, it would bluescreen just the same if the controller was set to "Compatibility" (meaning IDE) mode in the BIOS.

I eventually got PART WAY around this fault by manually replacing the Intel ICH9/10 drivers in the Mass Storage DriverPack with an updated copy downloaded from here:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_ … p;lang=eng

In my case I went for the 32-bit (x86) build, being for Windows XP.

I did this by replacing the files as found inside DP_MassStorage_wnt5_x86-32_1108.7z\D\M\I9 with those from the above download, including copying the newer iastor.sys over iastor9.sys.

Install then proceeded into textmode, through GUI setup, but when it tries to boot after GUI mode setup, BSOD again. Ugh!

It will install and boot with the above workaround in place AND with SATA in Compatibility (IDE) mode - must do both.

What could I have missed?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

Those drivers you linked to are already in dpms 11.08, you're not doing yourself any favors by tinkering with the pack.  They're identical.
Your best bet (and best performance) is to set the drive controller from IDE mode to AHCI mode.  In IDE mode, the new RST drivers from M\I9 aren't used because the HWID changes based on mode.  You'll be using the drivers from M\I5 instead (cougide.inf or couide2.inf).

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

Just in case you are still having trouble:
Do you have the latest BIOS?  Are there any firmware updates for your drive?  Remember the previous two suggestions can 'brick' your hardware if you don't know what you're doing.
Does your memory pass a MemTest86?
You could re-zero the drive with the HDD manufacturer's tools.  Then run the 'Advanced' Test to verify the HDD surface.
I know this can take a couple hours for budget drives, yet this ensures trouble-free operation & can weed-out drives that have suffered high-g's or other damage.

One might refer to these two MS support sites: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103 & http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316401

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

What are the HWIDs when the controller is switched to "Compatibility" (meaning IDE) mode in the BIOS?
AHCI?  RAID?
We need all the HWIDs to make sure we get this fixed properly.

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

Hi, I'll be able to check these tomorrow morning (NZ time). I got the BSOD regardless of whether the BIOS was set to ACHI or IDE (I think it called it "Performance" and "Compatibility" modes with AHCI and IDE mentioned in the respective descriptions for each).

I proceeded with the Windows install with the updated drivers, before I did that, I would get a BSOD regardless of whether the BIOS was set to IDE or AHCI mode, and regardless of use of a DriverPacks build or a Windows XP CD whose only modification was slipstreaming Service Pack 3.

Previous to updating the DriverPack, I also manually slipstreamed the ICH10 driver manually, when that succeeded as far as the GUI install stage, I then stopped it and decided to try to update the DriverPack and use that.

I'll look for any possible BIOS updates tomorrow too when I'm back at the school this is happening at. I'll also compare the PCI IDs as reported by the Windows XP -on-IDE install that succeeded against a second laptop which still has its shipped install of Windows 7 on it.

THanks for your pointers so far. I'll post an update tomorrow.

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

The HWID for the storage controller in "Compatibility" (IDE) mode is 8086:1c01. I still get the BSOD 7B in textmode setup with the stock MassStorage driverpack, regardless of IDE or AHCI mode.

The part number of this Toshiba Tecra R850 is PT525A-003019, BIOS version 2.7x (I'll look up the X in a minute and edit this post). Annoyingly, the BIOS v3.00 update on the drivers/updates list for that model, when run under Windows XP, barfs with "This computer is not supported".  It would only run under Windows 7 (including the download on that page listed under "Windows XP", which seems identical to the Win7 one anyway). The English in the update and in help descriptions in BIOS setup is pretty poor too.

Anyway, the BIOS update did not fix the problem. The unmodified DriverPack still bluescreens at the start of textmode setup, again both in AHCI and IDE modes.

I have no explanation as to why my modified MassStorge DriverPack would work in IDE mode (only) whereas neither IDE nor AHCI would work otherwise.

I'm going to keep hacking away at it, but any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

It's gonna be a long day.

please use the hwids tool linked in our signature for the hwids

the one you posted is not valid. (unless you are running a non windows OS, and we only support windows big_smile)

a valid HWID will look like

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

Yes, we need the full HWID list.  Just run the HWID tool linked in my signature.
As I suspected, your DEV ID changed when you switched to IDE mode.  And you'll be using the drivers from M\I5 instead (cougide.inf or couide2.inf).
Now, I also suspect that you're running into a similar problem that others have reported with different Intel IDE drivers which the two above use either PCIIDE.sys or INTELIDE.sys respectively.
Please post the relevant section of your %SystemRoot%\setupapi.log or if you don't know what to look for, post the setupapi.log to a site like www.pastebin.com

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

Hi, sorry I do run a Linux shop on the server side and usually refer to and look up PCI IDs in that way.

Anyway, here's the output of SaveHwids as run on the factory install of Windows 7 in AHCI mode.

It's always the squeaky wheel that gets the grease!  It's only the broken wheel that was hammered. lol

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

Sorry for the delay on this again.

I'm in Auckland where it wasn't so bad. The Waitakere ranges to our west got a very light dusting of snow (which melted within a couple of hours) and there were snowflakes falling downtown but nothing significant.
Funnily enough overall it was a warmer than average winter, despite that storm. The next fun event is the Rugby World Cup, but I'm not much of a rugby person, I'm more looking forward to the fireworks smile

Anyway back on topic...

I've tested the DriverPacks build on another PC (a HP DC7600) and it ran but found nothing, so it looks like that DP build is broken, probably by me messing with the MassStorage DP. When I get some time I'll build them again from scratch.
Anyway, an older DP build I did with everything that was current as at 18 August 2010 only BSODs in textmode setup when trying the SATA controller in AHCI mode, and starts fine when in IDE mode. It then detects about half the hardware correctly.

I've decided to fill in the blanks manually and go with that for now as I need to get these laptops into service ASAP, which may prove challenging as out of the two I've unboxed so far, one suffers random display corruption and they both insist you "Press any key when ready"... when handing over from a PXE boot to the local HDD. It continues normally after pressing that key. But that's not your problem, I'm just ranting. I'll stop now. Sorry.

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

BTW, the absolute latest testing version of dpms is here:
link removed
But since there was very minor changes from 11.08 for Intel, it probably won't solve your problem, but it's worth a shot anyway.  For the test, please include ONLY dpms (with txtmode enabled) on a fresh XP source (to eliminate any bugs from previous builds).
I have a feeling I'll have to add your HWIDs manually.

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

No response.  dpms 11.09 released.

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

Sorry. I've been unable to get back to carry out the test. I hope to test the released 11.09 this week on the affected laptops and will report back when it's done.

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

I've seen the 7B issue too on a couple different computers. I work in a computer shop, and I've recently made a new updated August disc. So far XP Pro and my MCE disc exhibit the same 7B failure. It seems to happen on a machine with Intel AHCI chips, using IDE or AHCI mode. Tried it on a Dell Dimension 4700 with just normal Intel SATA controllers, and it installs fine. I don't have the affected computers here anymore. I just ended up using a previous disc I made from December. I could experiment with older releases to see when the bug was introduced, but then I would have to keep burning discs, as the installs always work fine using VMWare.

I have a few spare junk computers in the back that I can experiment on. Hopefully one of them have the affected SATA chipset, then I can grab some IDs or whatever.

But what would have changed in the Mass Storage driver pack if an earlier version used to work? I need these discs to work on all chipsets.

Thanks.

the driver that supports your HWID.  mr_smartepants is not the only joker around here. tongue

It was likely updated to a newer version. sometimes new versions drop HWIDs. Sometimes newer versions require a newer firmware version. There are lots of reasons, too many to list. Suffice it to say it happens, and it happens often. If this crud were easy we would not need to be here

Well yeah... That is kinda the point of us providing the DriverPacks big_smile tongue

Reporting the HWIDs of a failed driver install is a HUGE help towards making the DriverPacks work on all hardware. big_smile
Even better if you can additionally report to us you know of a previous DriverPacks version that worked.
Best case is if you can also point us to a new / updated driver that you know works. (tested known good)

We are a small team with very limited hardware to test on...
We can't fix it if we don't know what's broke and we can only test a VERY small portion of the drivers in the packs.
We can't tell if our changes fix an issue if you don't reply and tell us if our changes worked.
YOU are a very important member of our team to big_smile

Contrary to popular belief we do NOT have a secret lab with tens of thousands of little black boxes that represent every possible PC hardware configuration ever built, BUT we are looking for someone to donate one if you know anybody who has one they would like to get rid of. LOL PS a volunteer to run around and put CD's in them would be a plus! ROFL.

the point is users like you who use the packs daily are a big part of the DriverPacks team... but only if you report your HWIDs DriverPacks versions and your results.

Thanks Tom! Welcome to DriverPacks.net

Okay, if I run across another system that 7Bs, I'll try to grab the IDs. What's the easiest, fastest, and/or best method to grab the IDs for ya? It's a little inconvenient to keep testing discs on a system when it's unknown if it's going to work. As I need to get these things outa here as quick as possible. My old discs just worked fine on a hundred or more systems. Maybe 3 or so had an issue with not seeing the HD in text mode.

I suppose it only wastes about 30-60 minutes if it fails and I end up having to use a previous disc. Because I'm pretty sure it goes all the way through the GUI setup, then BSODs on the reboot. The test system I grabbed yesterday actually worked all the way through. hmm So nothing on hand to test with right now. I may just make a new disc using only an old mass storage pack. As the most important thing of the discs is having all the windows updates integrated. Thanks for the work you and your team provide for us. It's much appreciated.

Okay, I found an affected system. An HP Media Center PC, HP Pavilion m7650n. I can boot into mini XP and run CPU-Z.

Here's a link to the CPU-Z report: http://textuploader.com/?p=6&id=9JkMU

No sure if there's anything useful in that.

EDIT: v11.07 has the issue too.

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

As a quick experiment, I took an XP Pro OEM SP3 image and only integrated the MS v11.09 driver. I did get one of those DSPdsblr popups during the install, but seen elsewhere on here that it's okay. And of course I got the 7B since there's not much Intel stuff changed since 11.08. I'll experiment with older drivers packs. It helps burning to a CD-RW. smile

KTD was disabled. I used the same settings as I always do and I don't see that popup message. But somehow only including one driver gave that popup. But it doesn't matter since everything works fine normally.

Here are the IDs.

Here's the IDE Mode IDs, even though it seems to work okay.

Re: [SLVD] 11.08 Intel ICH10 NT5 8086:1C03 causes STOP 7B

Aaight.. I found that v11.04 works, but v11.06, 7, 8, & 9 don't. No v11.05 for XP?
Hope that helps some.

EDIT: And for the heck of it, I tested v11.01 and that worked too.
