Topic: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Good afternoon

I upgraded DP_Base and a handful of DriverPacks before I started working on an image...

Imagine my surprise when I couldn't run the install in a VM - Windows Setup couldn't find any disks tongue

Downgrade to DriverPack MassStorage 8.05, and installation continues as expected (well, it find the HDD - there's other issues along the way unrelated to DP).

Any thoughts?  I can't remember the name of the tool to get all the hardware IDs or I would post.

Installing XP SP3.

Thanks.

should work just fine ...

DriverPacks DPs_BASE.log please?
HWID's tool... link is below
- but a VM will normally use standard drivers

remember code tags please

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Vmware uses AMD PCNet network driver or Intel e100/e1000, usually no sound, BX440 motherboard chipset. All of these built into the windows driver set.

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Well, yeah - the mass storage text mode driver from 805 works, but if I use 901, Setup can't find any HDD's

I should mention that I'm using RIS to install this system.

I'll post again with HWIDs and log files.

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

did you remove any drivers with nLite or other?

did you  use autoimage to create your ris source?

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

I haven't removed any drivers or software using any other tool.

I create a basic RIS image using the Server 2003 tools, then run Autoimage on the RIS installation point with the DP enabled.

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Those are the HWIDS of your VM not an actual machine, I assume since you said it was failing in a VM?

You enabled SCSI emulation in your VM???
( If you did enable SCSI emulator in the VM then don't do that wink - Why do that?...)

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Humm..

The results listed are from running SaveHwid's on the VM (after it's up and running with mass storage 805).

The host under the VM is an VMWare ESX box - I'd have to pry the box open and find out what devices are in it...  the ESX console doesn't tell me much about the hardware.

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

NP... Just confirming what i was looking at wink

can you disable SCSI and opt for IDE only ?

The LSI drivers have been updated... an older or newer pack may work.

There is not much point in emulating SCSI...

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

The VM's disk settings are currently "LSI Logic" SCSI.  My only other option is Bus Logic.

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Simple solution:
If you Create a New HDD you will be offered IDE or SCSI
- no real benefit to selecting SCSI in a VM that I know of?
- Create an IDE / default volume instead

Almost as simple solution:
I can get you a copy of the nightly (The testing teams version.) of the DriverPacks mass storage pack big_smile !
( offering pack blatantly this time... )
If you accept the nightly offer then you are obligated to report your results good or bad... tongue

We already know an older Mass storage pack works - ( [8.05] and that is  Good Info  thank you)

PS
It occurred to me that, it may not be obvious to non team members,
there is almost always a newer version of most of our Packs that are only available to the DriverPacks team.
- Just because we haven't released a new version
does not mean there is not a newer version of a DriverPack.
    - Sadly every day one or more of our nightly packs die...
We receive many reports of horrible and agonizing deaths at the hands of our team.
Only those packs that can survive multiple reincarnation / DriverPacks Team thrashings,
( including SamLab - Who can break anything wink LOL ),
        and are "-Inspector 13-" approved,
will ever see a "final status" and get a release date.
  - You cant just dump a bunch of drivers into a folder structure and call it a DriverPack (I WISH) big_smile

Our best testers are people like you , who can expose a repeatable failure sad, and hopefully prove a fix.

Jaak calls that "Help us to Help You.", and we like that a lot.

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Good morning

I've downloaded the 903r1 pack - will try it shortly.

As far as IDE vs SCSI - Note that I'm not using VMWare Server (the free server that runs on Windows), but the ESX server which (can) run on a bootable flash drive and is a plain jane text console.  The string of screen shots is the walk-through I get when I create a new disk - noting the absence of an IDE option.

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Too funny...
There is a Screen there Titled "Device Type"
but the IDE and SCSI choice's are not presented... LOL
I guess ESX 4 is not as much like VMWare 4 as I assumed

Thanks for educating me.

Um... we are going to need to look at this further...

Will you please subscribe to this thread so you can test a fix for us when one is available?

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Sure - been sub'd all along.

The whole ESX vs VMWare has been a bit of a learning curve for us as well...

I'll continue to use pack 805 - works for everything we've come across...  just thought it was strange the "newer" version failed while the older version succeeded.

Then again..  Visa, XP..  Office 2007, Office 2003..  MS is rife with examples of an old product working better ;-)

Thanks again, OverFlow - You guy and your team are doing good work smile

Off Topic...

Does it work if you select BusLogic... ? ? ?

Ya know, I never even tried smile

If I get to working on this this weekend (might sink time in on Ryan's packs), I'll test.  Otherwise..  I'll let you know Monday.

Thanks smile

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

This a tricky one.

The working driver is the one located in the L8 folder. Unfortunately this driver is not signed. Only Dell made one signed but they dropped LSI Hwids (including the esx one). I will update the pack with the latest signed driver from Dell and I will create a second INF that supports the missing HWIDs. Hopefully it will work.

May not be of much value considering newer posts, but yes - DP 9.03r1 does see a BusLogic device.

GOing to test the 9.05r1 next.

Thanks,

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Good morning.

9.05r1 works with BusLogic, but not LSI.  Same issue as before (setup unable to find any disks).

Thanks,

Tim

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Is it possable to check the firmware / BIOS and flash/update...

Sometimes newer drivers drop support for old firmware versions

Re: [SLVD] DriverPack MassStorage 9.01 - ESX VMWare - LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series

Hi Guys,

Its been a while since working with ESX, about a year ago I had a similar problem. We were using ESX 3.0 at the time. I no longer work at that company anymore so dont have access to ESX for any testing, but this is what I remember.

Firstly as ESX is a server tool, the Preference is to use SCSI over IDE (at least in our Environment).

I found that the MassStorage Drivers for VM Workstation were in DriverPacks, and were newer than what ESX required, the newer Drivers caused ESX to BSOD. I replaced the 3 VMSCSI files in DriverPacks with the ones from ESX and this fixed the BSOD.

Check the following for the VMSCSI Drivers:

* What version of VMSCSI Driver does Workstation / Server / ESX use
* Are they compatiable

You could try using the older version (from ESX) in DriverPacks and have VMTools upgrade them when its installed. This would allow all VMWare products to work with DriverPacks.

Hope this is helpful

Cheers
