Topic: KB913425 (portcls.sys) has been replaced by KB921401

Hello Bashrat,

Portcls.sys has been replaced by a newer hotfix build 5.1.2600.2950

ftp://81.209.195.50/tmp/KB921401/Window … 01-x86.rar

The zipped file contains the dutch and english hotfix.

You can replace the old KB913425 in your Driverpacks Base with the new one (KB921401).

Thanx

cool , maybe the Portcls.sys BSOD's will end now

Re: KB913425 (portcls.sys) has been replaced by KB921401

It's a request only hotfix so it would need a serious amount of testing.  The request only hotfixes with driver updates have given me a crapload of troubles.

Hmm... then I will not use it - unless Ryan can tell me it's safe.

Couldn't you include it as a build option? Disabled by default?

Re: KB913425 (portcls.sys) has been replaced by KB921401

I estimate that 0.01% of everyone who uses a pc, uses MIDI software (which is what this hotfix fixes). Plus it can be unstable. That's enough for me to decide to NOT include this hotfix.

This hotfix is not critical/recommended either, so you won't get it through Windows Update, which again says how rarely this hotfix is needed! wink

The hotfix doesn't fix only the midi software but also other hotfixes.
This is a cumulative hotfix. All previous hotfixes concerning portcls.sys are also supported by this hotfix.

So it is wrong to say that 0.01% of the people are helped by this hotfix.

I am using this hotfix. No problem so far.

Of course it's cumulative... that's always.

I'll implement as soon as RyanVM confirms it's good to go. He's the Updates Master, so his word will make or break it.

Did you mailed RyanVM, because RyanVM isn't very active on this forum.

Re: KB913425 (portcls.sys) has been replaced by KB921401

I wouldn't get too excited about this hotfix.  Have you read the KB article?  It fixes a MIDI issue.  I seriously doubt that this is going to fix any BSOD issue.  If it did, Microsoft would have said as much.  The BSOD issue, IMHO, is due to crappy drivers.  So long as RealTek and Analog Devices are prominent in the integrated components business, you should expect more of the same.

The PORTCLS.SYS update (KB921401) has now been implemented in the RyanVM Update Pack.
