Topic: NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS not properly recognized

Hello there,

this is equivalent to this other problem.

I have included the graphics A 806C testpacks in a slipstream Windows XP installation disk using DriverPacks BASE and used it to install the operating system on an HP Pavilon dv6000 laptop. After the installation the display adapter, an "NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS", is not properly recognized and a question mark over a yellow circle appears in the Device Manager as showed in the following picture:

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9062/20080626225327mr5.png

As you can see in the picture above other two devices are not properly recognized. Does anybody know how could I identify them so that then I can look for their drivers? "Periferica sconosciuta" in Italian means "Unknown device" and its properties show this other information: http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/873/20080626234307yj2.png

*** EDIT ***

I tested it on another laptop with a GeForce 8600 GT: the result is the same as above.

Re: NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS not properly recognized

you can (from device manager) view their hwids
right click, select properties - select the details tab - then Hardware ID's from the drop down menu...

Hardware is always matched to drivers by their HWIDS (that is the reason they exist)

(and is why we always have to hound people to include them with thier posts)

Re: NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS not properly recognized

Thanks OverFlow. Sorry, I didn't know I had to include them in my posts. Should I have to edit all my unresolved problems and requests and add them?

How do I get to the device driver (or brand and model) from the HWIDS?

Re: NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS not properly recognized

LOL... too funny wink  - you mean you never read "read before you post" in my signature? ROFL

usually you can just Google them. you only need the first two parts ususally.

PCI\VEN_10b7&DEV_9200&SUBSYS_100010B7  =
Google VEN_10b7&DEV_9200     result = DeviceDesc= "3Com EtherLink 10/100 PCI"
Google PCI\VEN_10b7&DEV_9200&SUBSYS_100010B7  result = DeviceDesc= "3Com EtherLink PCI TPC NIC (3C900B-TPC)"

VEN = Vendor ID         10b7 = 3COM
DEV = Device model    9200 = Etherlink 10/100
SUBSYS = Remanufacurer or subtype / variation

Re: NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS not properly recognized

Thanks again OverFlow, for the explanation and for your patience; you must have been repeated those things thousands of times smile

The HWID of one of the not recognized devices is "ACPI/WEC_1023" but I haven't found anything regarding that using Google, except for a site in Russian which unfortunately I don't understand sad

Re: NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS not properly recognized

use the hwid's tool in my signature -
the format should be pci\ven not acpi/wec it may be that is is a subcomponent of the main hardware and installing that driver will fix both devices.

Nice tool! Thanks again! Still the output of the program doesn't seem to give any more clue to me...

Re: NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS not properly recognized

Found the solution in an Italian forum! The device corrensponding to the HWID "ACPI\WEC1023" or "ACPI\WEC_1023" is a "Winbond HID CIR Receiver" (Infrared) and may be installed using this driver. This may be helpful to someone else who will use Google to find this device smile

Which one of the 3rd Party packs would be more suitable to include this kind of driver? "Input" I guess...

In general, when a driver is suited for the inclusion in a pack and when is not? I mean, I guess not all the requests are accepted... or maybe yes? If not, on what criteria they are accepted or denied?

Well, you do not request additions to the 3rd party DriverPack, at least usually.
Instead, you add them yourself and share with the rest of us. Give and take so to speak.

For the official packs, requests should be clear.
Of course, you do not have to decide whether your requested graphics driver goes to pack A, B or C wink

Ususally, any request is accepted if the driver is really not present already AND it is common HW (so no specifically, just made-for-you stuff).
A nice description of the device, HWIDs, the versions of the DriverPacks you already included that did not support it, maybe some log files, a proper link to the official non-beta driver hosted on the manufacturer's webspace and a polite post ususally greatly enhance your chances of acceptance, though big_smile

As for what 3rd party DriverPack a driver fits in, if you really cannot find a matching pack (we do have plenty though), just post it in the 3rd party DriverPack forum and someone will guide you smile
It may even be so exotic that we'd start a new pack.

Other than that, you are of course always free to create your own personal 3rd party DriverPack (you dojn't even have to share it if you do not want to).
You can then fit all kinds of strange drivers in that probably only you use and not have to worry about our which goes where convention big_smile

it's same problem like here http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=2737

Re: NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS not properly recognized

Well I'm stumped about the 8400/8600 mobile problem.
The only idea I have is that both abdou and krige are using non-english builds of XP and some of the registry settings in the nvidia .inf are coded for US english builds.
It looks like the drivers are loading, but the device can't start.

I'll try again with the 177.41 build soon.

That's correct: I used an Italian build of XP both for the 8400 and 8600 because they were meant for users who don't speak English. I use the English build for myself, that I used for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600. I still have to test the 806D pack there.

Re: NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS not properly recognized

you can download your driver and instal it from here http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/

it work for me ^^

Re: NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS not properly recognized

That's odd, since I get the nvidia .inf files from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/

So the DriverPacks don't work, but the driver from the above website does? hmm
Which version?

How can I add them myself? I haven't write access to the 3rd Party DriverPacks folder.

Quite reasonable. I modified all my requests accordingly. Maybe someone should write a sticky post on "how to make drivers requests" smile

I do prefer to share: I hate to think that the time I wasted to solve a problem might be wasted by someone else who has the same problem.

Regarding creating my own pack, most of the times I manage to add drivers to my own pack following this nice tutorial, but sometimes I feel lost when the tutorial rules don't apply to the drivers I am dealing with. For example, I have these files of a driver which don't include an .inf file:

AUTORUN.INF
Autoswitch.exe
data1.cab
data1.hdr
dir.txt
dot.bmp
engine32.cab
Install.ini
Install6x.dll
KILLW16.EXE
layout.bin
setup.exe
setup.ibt
setup.ini
setup.inx
setup.isn
SMSetup.exe
Thumbs.db
VSSVER.SCC

The AUTORUN.INF contains only:

[Autorun]
Open=Autoswitch.exe
icon=setup.exe
label=Adapters
