I just posted the issue on graphics pages to flag fault...
However re reading what I did... Vista got it right out of the tin, may be the device is there after handshake in win7 with the driver as is...
Maybe if you check in control panel - sound once handshake across HDMI has taken place... the third device COULD be there to enable as I mention above as I now find it with the earlier driver

Reloaded graphics driver from Intel site 8.15.10.1930 (can't find a dell one)
during install it pops up saying are you sure you want to install an OLDER Intel HDMI driver 6.10.01.2077 dated 10/07/2012
(it had 6.10.1.2089 dated 15 /03 /2010 which I'm pretty sure was added by SAD from graphics 12 03 packs )
clicked yes and rebooted
Now under control panel - sound it listed TWO devices sigmatel audio and sigmatel SPDIF (but now you can change between the two manually, pretty sure you couldn't before) sadly no Audio out of the HDMI port yet.
However... after the handshake across HDMI... this time when you go back in to control panel - sound, you find a third HDMI device comes up BUT only the sigmatel audio is selected... now right click HDMI and click set as default ... YOU GET a green tick beside BOTH sigmatel sound and HDMI device and the sound swaps automatically between the two if handshake to other HDMI takes place.
Rather strangely AFTER a reboot control panel - sound is no longer showing the HDMI device but when you connect via HDMI after handshake it is back and it still swapped automatically between the laptop and the TV and vice versa
So just been hunting and got nowhere.... except background info (FYI I'm running A17 Bios too)
The 965 graphics driver is supposed to give the sound out of the HDMI port ??? I couldn't find anything on Intel site about HDMI drivers although they seem to know people have issues with Win7 (I'm running the latest which is also the one they reco).
I tried the driver utility that said chipset could be updated to 9.20.1021 but it made no difference and their tool now says I have 9.20.1025
Others are saying does it pick up the HDMI sound output when using the port... if you go in to Control Panel - Sound, you should see two devices the Sigmatel (to headphone sockets, speakers etc.) and a second listed as the Intel HDMI digital output... make sure its using HDMI. However in my configuration above, I see the default one is the Sigmatel output and the HDMI is missing but I have a second listing for SPDIF digital output !!! which is not selected.
So I put a vista drive back in and booted up. Checking Control Panel - Sound, here it shows Sigmatel and the Intel HDMI, like its supposed to.
What is a little odd is you can't select the HDMI output... its greyed out and then when I checked I got picture and no sound and I thought here we go... However, after some basic testing....
Once the HDMI port and the TV have gone though its handshaking protocol it Auto switched to the HDMI digital output (and the Sigmatel is greyed out) now fire up a video file and you get picture and sound. (Before I was running a video file in media player) before the handshake and it never switched.
Vista drivers (on Vista 32 bit windows) that do as its supposed to are

Hadn't tried HDMI port. Driver was saying installed and happy.
Just tried a movie using HDMI on to panasonic plasma TV, picture was perfect.... but no sound
HDMI device / driver (pretty sure SAD installed) listed as Sound , video and game controller is
Intel High Def Audio HDMI
WHQL 6.10.1.2089 dated 15 / 03 / 2010

I've gone and messed up orig post got overwritten by my reply.
idea was to flag SAD 2.5 installed / microsoft reco sound driver on win7 with a Dell insperion 1525
Lots of people with Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio struggling. I had issue where the Mic worked, but only just and Skype couldn't cope and it kept deselecting the audio device on boot (hence no sound coming out for callers).
I found a dell driver that is for Vista but it installs fine and the mic is loud and clear and skype works normally.
Vista Driver that works is 6.10.0.5866 dated 15/02/2008 (dell R218148)

In the end its fantastically simple to install drivers, Run SAD 2.5.exe it makes a few folders with obvious names. Download the driver packs and put Packs in the right folders and run "dp-install_tool.cmd" follow very simple yes / no questions and job done.
Hi Guys thanks very much for all your hard work on SAD.
I just tried SAD 2.5 on a win vista and a win 7 machine, no errors, all devices up and running.
However a couple of strange ones I'd like to understand.
First; Instructions make no sense at all to me and aren't listed in the same post.
I could not fathom how SAD and Base can work together at all. I have used base quite a few times to slip XP disc but nothing I tried worked, the instructions and I didn't click.
In the end its fantastically simple to install drivers, Run SAD 2.5.exe it makes a few folders with obvious names. Download the driver packs and put Packs in the right folders and run "dp-install_tool.cmd" follow very simple yes / no questions and job done.
Only a long wait right at the end of the process when confirming if you want to keep log file or not got me worried. Something to show its working and not crashed would have helped.
Secondly; I now have some odd names for devices show up in device manager on the one running vista. A Toshiba Satellite A200 PSAEOE laptop
Touchpad:
toshiba synaptics driver (no ability to disable tap to click)
win update offers a later synaptics driver (no ability to disable tap to click)
latest synaptics driver from their site (no ability to disable tap to click)
SAD2.5 synaptics driver (no ability to disable tap to click)
So I Used an ALps driver (lists either, on tosh site for this machine) and tap to click is available to turn on and off and it works, its not greyed out like it is with any synaptics one.
But I get nag at boot saying
ApntEx.Exe the procedure entry point Vxd_TypingInhibit could not be located in Vxdif.dll OK it and it works.
And now I'm confused because after running SAD the installed driver was still not allowing tap to click adjustments and I was sure it now showed the synaptec device as BRANDED BY DELL
but I now have an Alps driver from toshiba site and that shows "Dell Touch pad" in the adjustment Windows

Comes up as x800 platinum edition (twice as expected) after first boot was installing avivo codecs or something.
This board has continued to work fine (so long as you format on another computer) but would not allow any drive to be formatted during windows install in the configuration I had, the BIOS setup had no impact.
Neither a DP'd win disc or Std win disc made any difference. The PC loads either disc allows you to get to the format part of the install then it sits and achieves nothing
Last time round I searched the net for a reason and came across a support doc (I can't find anymore) stating quite a few Gigabyte boards behave this way when you are using a SATA harddisk and an IDE DVD drive
Finally got round to putting a SATA DVD drive in and the problem disappears. It now installs windows (and formatting without issue).
I guess its new to people here or a long forgotten peculiarity with this set up that should be more widely understood?
you have a lot of and some quite old third party packs that may cause errors (but i'll leave that for the experts to confirm), I'd run again and leave out monitor, TV and blue tooth

Do you have dual boot on your laptop (win XP and win 7) ?
If so, does the sound work in win 7 ? If it does it could be drivers stopping sound in XP. But from what I've read it sounds more like the sound card has failed.

just reading a pc mag about issue, the feedback was if its an 1150 (or many other models) "they have a well known design fault"

why not build a disc with all the key ones.
like mass storage, chipset, lan, wlan (which can be a right pain on Dell machines) , graphics, sound, and the new 3rd party HID (as its a laptop) ALL here..
Am I being dim?
why wouldn't you use mass storage, chipset and then the LAN one you want?
Hi Guys thanks for all your help.
The issue was I have only had PATA hardware until I got this board (it probably shows above). Using what "was" a new release of Mass storage I couldn't get my new build to work using a SATA drive. But the same hardware did everything correctly but using a PATA drive.
The first time it turns out it was a broken SATA drive not anything to do with mass storage 12.01 I replaced it (with a new SATA drive) and using a new build with mass storage 12.03 I had yet more issues trying to load windows, but with different errors.
mr_smartepants suggested BIOS settings but that it didn't help, but it did suggest he didn't think the mass storage pack was an issue. TechDud suggested other hardware causes. I doubted the Board was U/S as it worked on PATA and whilst I did not believe there was any dirt/debris on the SATA cable / port (I do check for this kind of thing), trying some of his ideas seemed to get things moving forward. 1) Proving the new drive was OK, 2) A different port proved BIOS set up was OK 3) At least some of the SATA ports worked, 4) The disc with mass storage 12.03 was OK.
Both the drives were always listed in the BIOS so I was unaware if it could see them the SATA connection could ? be dodgey.
Today I put the same cable back on where first I started, with the BIOS settings where I had started, used all the same hardware I started with (bar the second SATA drive) and with the windows disc build I started with (12.03) and its booted up into windows I loaded last night as though there had never been any issues.

Thanks TechDud. Put drive in another PC and it detected drive (as slave) and windows wanted to format it (which worked ) using some basic diagnostic tools claims all is fine.
Took drive out and put back in this PC but decided to try it in another SATA port... it booted and was happy with same BIOS settings. And at present windows is installing. I guess what I should have done was stay with the same port. But as I'd found nothing I thought I'd try something and now windows is away seemed a shame to stop.
When finished, can I plug it back in the orig SATA port and (if port OK) will it just boot without worrying which ports its using?
Did spot teh BIOS says it the F8a latest one but with the date a year out !!!
So I got a replacement drive that seems to be OK. Everything now works at the speed it should, it loads setup files reports the size of the drive Ok lets you make or delete partions... but when I go to format it does nothing and sits at 0%

... if I go in BIOS fumbling about trying to make it work in SATA mode it makes NO sense at all. The manual is useless, as is help in BIOS. When I change between Disabled, Auto, Combined or Enhanced. None seem to have helped. All I seem to get is that it stops me using the PATA dvd drive I want. I don't know what I'm doing...

Driver correctly installed and card calls itself Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition - Driver listed as 8.591.0.0 dated 25/02/2009 and digitally signed
I see in Sound, video and game controllers, I get "ATI T200 Unified AV Stream Driver" 6.14.10.1095 dated 31/03/2009 and WHQL signed. Never noticed that before.
Can you try this DriverPack Graphics C (with the DriverPack Graphics A above)?

Have used both r1 packs and installed windows. Avivo took quite a while after OOBE... got message "please wait while windows configures AMD avivo codecs" took 5 + mins

Do you need dot net 2 for all features of ATI extras? (is that what the runtimes bit adds ?)
What happens if you uncheck certain fetaures on Base when you integrate (set up page 11 "other optional setings") ?
