SOLVED! An associate here at work was able to narrow down the problem to the ich7id2.inf file. This file causes the GX620 to crash on boot; the file, ich7ide.inf, is the one that is needed by this chipset. The fix is to not run the makePNF command. For some reason this will cause windows to grab the wrong driver. ...or at least that's in layman's terms.

I am running into the same problem with a GX620 on my XP image that I built in late August on DP 8.05 and the packs available at the time.  I build the image in VMware from install media integrated with the DriverPacks.   I don't however use sysprep.  I simply set the IDE interface to Standard IDE and the HAL as ACPI.  I also build a PIC HAL image for older PCs.   I boot right from the restored image, wait for keyboard and mouse detection and proceed to answer any prompts that might come up for undetected hadware.  It's a beautiful thing.

What impact would disabling makePNF have on the image booting for the first time on a target PC and how would I go about disabling it?

Best regards to the DP team,

I wrote up a summary of the method I use to build an cross-hardware compatible image and put it on the 'FOG' (Free Open Ghost) website wiki  - http://freeghost.no-ip.org/wiki/index.p … deployment.

It's not particularly detailed and there is a lot that goes on in each part.  I have used this to make an image deployed to 150 kiosks on 4 very different types of motherboards.  I also use this method to build maintainable images that I customize and deploy to my small business office clients desktops and laptops and sometimes servers.

A BIG thanks to the DP team that makes doing it effectively possible.  Those thanks should also include the nLite team, RyanVM (for his update packs), and VMware for their free 'Server' product and excellent Workstation product.

-felipe

Right now I use KTD in my installs into VMware for imaging and restoration most PCs.  Note I am not using sysprep only the 'Standard IDE' driver trick to facilitate booting on most PCs
.  The problem is the 1.2GB of drivers stays on the new destination PC.  How can I facilitate a KTD removal from the newly imaged PC after driver detection is over?

Thanks,
-felipe

rajeshkumar,

You can't do 'unattended' if you want to do 'repair' using conventional methods.  To do that from a single CD you would have to setup a multiboot CD configuration.  I found it too complicated so I opted to do it without unattended options.

I rarely do straight installs.  I build my base images in VMware then use a disk imaging program to capture the fully configured OS with certain applications, utilities, tweaks and an optimized default user profile.  With the DriverPacks integrated I can restore the image on a just about any PC or laptop, boot and wait about 10 minutes for just about every piece of HW to get detected.  Then I just install whatever remaining windows patches or minor application updates there were since I created the source image as well as whatever client specific software is needed.

-felipe

Add:

Dell Inspiron B130
Dell Inspiron 600m
And I ran into it on a Dell E520 as well.

All last week while working at client sites  - I did not get the HWIDs, it only occurred to me when I searched the forums this morning.

Removing the devices from the DM and installing the Dell driver downloaded from their support site fixed it in all cases.

Cheers,
-felipe

The answer you seek is discussed here: http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=669

In summary,
Rename 'winnt.sif' to 'winnt.sif.old'
Add this to 'i386\presetup.cmd' in your CD image:

DEL /F %systemroot%\system32\setupold.exe

OR if you already have a hung up repair install going - boot into Repair Console from the XP CD and delete the 'setupold.exe' file from the C:\windows\system32 folder then reboot.

As far as I know you can only do upgrades of XP from one version to another (Home to Pro) using the installer from within Windows (I suppose it works the same way though).  A standard repair install is executed by booting from the XP CD.

Cheers,
-felipe

Thanks! That information made my life easier today.  I have a nicely working set of DP v6 integrated discs.  I renamed WINNT.SIF in my DP integrated disc image and made a new disc to allow repair mode to work then ran into the 'fake setup' problem at boot.  I usually use another XP install disc with only RyanVM's updates integrated for repairs but ran into a laptop that has a SATA drive and controller but no BIOS support for ATA compatibility mode so the text mode setup would fail.  The DP integrated disc with the mass storage drivers did the trick but then I ran into the 'fake setup' problem.

Note: To fix the system on which I already had run the repair install option without having to do it again with fixed presetup.cmd version of the XP disc I booted into repair console mode and deleted the setupold.exe manually.  After a reboot setup continued normally.

Thanks again to wixfigur!

Thanks, Bâshrat for getting to work on the KTD/array error.  I made a small contribution to the effort.

-felipe

Bump.  Still hoping for a resolution.

Ok..Tried it on a clean unmodified XP Pro file set, no nlite, no ryanvm.  Installed clean into VMware VM.  Same problem.  Same 'array' error.

I'm frustrated.

-felipe

@Bâshrat - Could you post an ini file that you know works correctly?  In my case it's CPU,Chipset,LAN,WLAN,3rdparty (Modem,VMware), KTD, QC on.  I have also tried without QC and 3rdparty.  I would also be happy to try to sync up a time where we could do a VNC session from my PC so I can show you how I have it setup and what I do to get to the installable disc.

@Everybody - Is everyone that is having the problem using nlite and/or RyanVM packs?  Be specific.

In my case I use both and do the RyanVM integration from within nlite 1.0.1.  I only take out a couple of things, messenger, msn.  I use a lot of the visual and shortcut tweaks.  Driver CABs get recompressed since I push the TCP limit up to 50.  I make a copy of the modified image then apply the DriverPacks to the copy.  Everytime I repeat the DriverPacks I do it off a another copy of the nlite/ryanvm image.  After integration I use Bink.nu's BCD program to build an ISO from the image tree.  I then do my VMware installs from the ISO or burn to CD for physical install on a PC.

-felipe

@RogueSpear - Definitely as an admin.  I only create one user at the prompt for creating users (I don't do full unattended) called 'Admin' and it's automatically assigned admin rights by the XP installer.

@Bâshrat -  I realize it does not give you any more detailed information but it's also clear that it's not an issue with the install routine executing at first login.   I was worried that the nlite/ryanvm integration might be screwing it up and I was hoping I could end up with an Bâshrat the Sneaky integrated XP installation that I could clone to other systems.  What can we do to get you usable info?  The 'debug option' is not working.  Should I make my ISO or the resulting installed VMware image available to you for analysis?  I could provide you with remote access to the running VMware image via a VNC session where you could take a look at the resulting install and the CD image.  I could also dump a copy of the folder that I have the BASE and packs setup into the VMware image.

-felipe

Same problem with manual integration except now it displays the dialog "Could not delete element from array!" on screen.  Upon clicking OK it proceeds to delete the D folder, exe and config files.  I am using the same ini as before with the integrated CD.

I did install the new file in the bin folder to replace the old one.  I also checked the contents of the 7z file and see that three of the EXE files have a 9/25 date.  The DP enabled CD image was made from a copy of the previous source with nlite/ryanvm integration that had not had DriverPacks applied to it yet.  I never apply DriverPacks to an already DP'd source.

As a workaround is there a method for applying the DP integration manually after the OS is installed?

-felipe

Tried with the new DPfinisher package and the 'debug = true' option set.

; About adding your own exceptions
; -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
;
; - The following system variables are supported:

;  * %SystemRoot%
;  * %WinDir%
;  * %ProgramFiles%
;  * %DPSROOT% (equals the value of [Settings]\DPsRoot)

;
; - A requirement of the types '+hwids', '-hwids', '+infFiles' and '-infFiles'
; is considered forfilled if ANY of the listed conditions is met.
;

; About the implementation of KTD
; -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
;
; - To optimize the DevicePath entry in the registry (to allow more drivers to
; be added), a new system variable will be created, which will accessible
; through the variable %KTD%. The result is that each path that is added
; (that refers to a driver), will be much shorter - and therefore this allows
; more drivers to be added.

The log mentions an entry in the 'Runonce' key to delete the finisher at the next reboot but before that reboot there is no key entry and the finisher is gone but for the log.

Integrated already and installing.  Will report shortly.  Any enlightenment to offer on post OS install manual integration without having to Driverpack the source CD?

Cheers,
-felipe

As a workaround could the DriverPacks be integrated manually after the OS install by copying in the \D structure and executing the scripts?  This would also be useful in cases where existing working system image needs to be duped to another different PC.

Thanks,
-felipe

I have run into the same problem for the last few minor versions.  The dpfinisher.log displays "Could not delete element from array!" and the DriverPacks, with KTD enabled, are deleted.  I build my images in VMware then deploy them.  The last working Bâshrat the Sneaky I used was back in April and since I have wanted to update my install discs.  I have listed the log and ini contents below.  My CD builds have been tweaked with nlite 1.0.1 and RyanVM's current pack (as of a couple days ago.).

;
; REMARKS
;
; =============================================================================
; -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
; About adding your own exceptions
; -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
;
; - The following system variables are supported:
;  * %SystemDrive%
;  * %SystemRoot%
;  * %WinDir%
;  * %ProgramFiles%
;  * %DPSROOT% (equals the value of [Settings]\DPsRoot)
; * %DPSTMP% (when you must extract files for example)
;
; - Available executables:
;  * addUsepmtimer.exe
;  * devcon.exe
;
; - The unique ID in the sectionnames (i.e.: [<OS platform>__<unique ID>__
; <driver dir, including the master 'D' dir>]) must NOT be sequential, it
; must just be unique. Only numbers (0-9) can be used. The reason for the
; existence of this string is that sometimes there are multiple exceptions
; for the same driver, which would result in identical section names, which
;   is not allowed.
;
; - A requirement of the type 'tagFiles' is considered forfilled if ALL of the
;   listed conditions are met.
;
; - A requirement of the types '+hwids', '-hwids', '+infFiles' and '-infFiles'
; is considered forfilled if ANY of the listed conditions is met.
;
; - The commands will ONLY be executed if ALL the active requirements are
;
; - The commands will be executed in the order they are entered.
;
;
; -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
; About the implementation of KTD
; -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
;
; - To optimize the DevicePath entry in the registry (to allow more drivers to
; be added), a new system variable will be created, which will accessible
; through the variable %KTD%. The result is that each path that is added
; (that refers to a driver), will be much shorter - and therefore this allows
; more drivers to be added.

I hope I add to the information needed to solve the problem.

Thanks Bâshrat the Sneaky for your efforts and great tool!
-felipe

I ran into the issue with the current 6.06.1 base, 6.05 packs as well and found that the directory structure created in the XP tree had an extra 'D' sub folder, ie. '\D\D\'.  The root 'D' folder contained no other subfolders.  Note: Used method 1 and my XP Home OEM source had been processed by nLite v1.0.1 with the current RyanVM update pack.

Thanks for the great tool Bashrat!
