The one thing that makes NT5 relevant still is Latency.
Try comparing latency for any MS OS (using tool in sig. - except 8) on the same hardware.
The difference is often not just "statistically significant", yet vast.
8 may help bridge the vast gap, yet is not yet popular and is comparatively expensive.

This may be part of the reason that XP market share actually increased in July of this year.

Gavin Clarke of The Register wrote:

"While the Windows 8 usage numbers are more salt in wounds for Microsoft, it’s the minor consolidation in Windows XP that should worry everybody else.

As web browser migration specialist Browsium noted in its blog here, even before Windows XP’s July bump its use has been falling rather too slowly for the industry to realistically hit the goal of zero Windows XP by April 2014."

     Quoted from:    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/08/02 … july_data/

As a matter effecting International Security, i implore Microsoft to reconsider the final extended support date for Windows XP.  1/12/2016 is the date that XP Embedded's extended support is to be nullified.  That would be a logical extension.
   http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/ … Windows+XP
Vista is supported until 4/11/2017.

One other factor may be dead or dying Win7+ hardware for which an OEM license is non-transferable (AFAIK).
This may leave some with the choice between buying another license (expensive plan), "pirating" their own copy of Windows (illegal plan), or rolling back to an OS for which they are legitimately licensed (simple plan).  A choice between Vista and XP may yield predictable results.

Note that it is ill-advised to use Windows 2000 in any networked environment.
Soon it will be ill-advised to use any NT5 OS in any networked environment.
"Commander William Adama" of the "Battlestar Galactica" had a simple way of preventing "Cylon" (not to be confused with Skylon) infiltration of any of their computer controlled systems - Don't Network Them!  That leaves site-security as a prime concern.

OK, i have Matrix 5.7 in the archive, yet testing on unsupported hardware has revealed "insufficient memory for fastfat.sys".  I will attempt to find some supported hardware to test.

edit:  one other thing, should this discussion not be moved to the NT5 MassStorage topic heading?

That project may ultimately allow NT5 support to be extended to HWID's not covered by the official drivers.
Certainly, it cannot be done without approval of both Admin here & Mr. Telyatnikov at minimum.
However; the aim at this present time is simply to properly support official drivers.

It might actually be Matrix 5.7 which is the last official version to generally support Win2k, not simply "Advanced Server".

Why not inquire to bigfoot, what may need be done?
Is it not better to work in collaboration than it is to stumble about in competition?

A collaboration would allow for more participation from others, if agreed by bigfoot.

Let us not step upon his toes.

OK, i have modified MassStorage to specify Win2k drivers utilizing folders [ I], [I2], and [IC]

Testing on my Inspiron 1525 with the HWID "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2829&CC_0106".
Chose the driver in [I2] (Matrix 7.0) for the majority of HWID's, despite the warning above from Intel.
This took some time to weed out the "corrupted file" errors and "insufficient memory" errors.
(I wonder if having 2GB has anything to do with the memory errors.)
Long story short, it failed ultimately with "dmboot.sys", a Win2k system file, being deemed "corrupted".

Attempting to find the latest "Matrix 6" driver to base Win2k support upon.

May i join in?

Here is a thought.  I see you have integrated two DP_Chipset packs.  You need only one.  It is best to use Chipset & MassStorage packs made at the same time.

For starters, if we want Win2000 to work with your notebook, perhaps we should only integrate Chipset and MassStorage for now.  In that effort, i would usually advise using the latest nightlies, here and here.  Later, you will find other updated nightlies in their respective forum topics.

Burn a DVD plus or minus RW.  Disc install will have the greatest odds of success.  RW's save eWaste.  Use media that your notebook disc drive can read though.  Hold that thought for now until reading the whole post though.

Start with an unmodified Win2000 SP4 disc.  nLite may make your source unusable for integration.  Avoid it's use for now.  RVMi is preferred.  However; updates are not important now.  Simply getting this working (if possible) is the priority.

I will examine the AHCI on the support page linked by mr_smartepants and attempt to resolve what changes may be necessary.

edit:  unfortunately, from the "readme.txt" for the Intel AHCI controller driver package (INDOTH-12766700-XP.EXE) from Sony, i quote:

intel wrote:

"3.  The following operating systems are not supported:

Any version of the following Microsoft operating systems:
    - MS-DOS
    - Windows 3.1
    - Windows NT 3.51
    - Windows 95
    - Windows 98
    - Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
    - Windows NT 4.0
    - Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
    - Windows 2000 Professional"

Curious, that driver is WHQL'ed including NT5.0 aka Windows 2000.
Only PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2653&CC_0106 (ICH6M - 82801FBM (Mobile)) is enabled to use that particular driver.

It is actually more likely that the Official DriverPack releases you had tried earlier were more likely to contain references to the driver Sony had officially released for XP.

It may be that the driver mentioned here is not compatible with Windows 2000.  Therefore, you may need an older driver from intel to accomplish your goal.  Version 5.5.0.1035 is a likely candidate.  Does your notebook have a working floppy drive?  If so, use the 'F6' method to test.  If that succeeds in "seeing" your HDD, it may be necessary for me to add some stuff to MassStorage.ini for Win2k compatibility.

I would like to assist in ensuring the latest Nightlies are compatible with Win2k.

Please don't hurt me, admin.  I usually use Hiren's CD to capture HWID's under similar circumstances.

Thanks for reporting this to my attention.

I am indeed the original author of "OpenGL geometry benchmark". It was a small tool that I developed back in 2002. It is currently extremely obsolete, since it's still using the old OpenGL API; I wouldn't consider its results even relevant nowadays. I don't think it even includes OpenGL vertex buffer objects."

"From: Flavien Brebion
I just tried to report this app, with no success, and for a good reason..

Unless I'm missing something, this entire website that is hosting apps ( www.windows8appstore.com ) seems to be fishy, and isn't the official Win8 app store. Therefore I cannot report it to Microsoft.

If you go on this page: http://www.windows8appstore.com/windows … 95020.html
... and scroll down to the very bottom, you should see why:

"Windows8Appstore.com is an independent web site and has not been authorized, sponsored, or otherwise approved by Microsoft Corporation"

Instructions from Microsoft's website to report an app therefore do not appy and there is no "report" button.

Their twitter and facebook pages were violating the EULA and were removed ( dead links at the bottom of the page ).

So IMO you just were scammed by a phishing site that utilizes Microsoft's design to make it look like it's the official Windows 8 app store, and it is most likely that all their apps / downloads are trojans.

Hope that helps,

F. Brebion"

Another Known Issue:

OpenCL-GPU does not work for HD 7700, 7800 and 7900 Series cards.

These are not yet Official Releases.

We need feedback.
I need to finish documenting the changes for all Nightlies too.

I have been informed by a reliable source that that is NOT Microsoft's Windows 8 App Store!

Quoted from the bottom of that page:

"Windows8Appstore.com is an independent web site and has not been authorized, sponsored, or otherwise approved by Microsoft Corporation."

They are hosted in the United States (actually San Antonio Texas) yet governed apparently by the laws of Hong Kong?  Is that legally enforceable?

Here's some site info:  http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report … pstore.com

They rank 85274th in popularity on the internet as rated by Netcraft, and growing.
This site ranks 8243rd overall.  This is the most popular this site has been over the last couple of years.

Somebody tell me how that site is not infringing on Microsoft's and various Developer's work and reputations.

In addition, it is noteworthy that the source code for said program is also contained in the Archive.com backup.
Is this program then therefore "Open Source"?

Note the differing Terms between the "app" downloader and what is official.
They appear to be separate agreements, governed by laws of differing nations.
One in the United States, the other in Hong Kong.  They look totally different.

Are they really violating those Terms?

Best to get the author himself onboard first.
Not easy to find in this "twitverse" of "anti-social media", though i now have a means.

He is the one who's rights may have been violated.
Any claim of infringement should be made by him.
That claim would have the greatest substance and priority.

" If your copyright or trademark is being infringed, you may notify Microsoft by selecting the Apps, Services or Search categories applicable to the Microsoft online service listed above, and following the provided instructions to submit your notice. "

     Quoted from https://www.microsoft.com/info/cpyrtInfrg.aspx

Here is an app seemingly repackaged with a downloader, despite an apparent copyright by it's original author "© 2002 - F. Brebion"

Here are some details:

1) link to the app on the store:  http://www.windows8appstore.com/windows … 95020.html
2) link to the downloader EULA:  http://www.windows8appstore.com/downloaderpolicy.html

It appears to include a possible toolbar named "Secure Speed Dial".  Seems like 'crapware'.

At least that junk gave me an option of whether or not to install it.
Unfortunately the next screen for "Welcome to the Windows Cleaner Installation." seems to give me no such option.
  It also includes an autoupdater.

Crap!  This is not at all what i originally wanted to download.
Oh, i now see the teeny, tiny "skip" text beside the comparatively gigantic "Next" button.
  That is certainly deceptive.

Now i am bombarded by another inclusion:  "Welcome to the Ainishare Free Screen Recorder Installation".
quote:  "captures what you see on screen and what you hear/say simultaneously, and saves them as compressed video file in realtime.  TIME LIMITED GIVEAWAY, Get it Now!"

Skip.

Now it seems to download.

Then i am asked to install a "Mixi-D Toolbar".
I am given no other choice, even after unselecting the toolbar, to "Install & Exit".

Noting that the filesize for "OpenGL Geometry Benchmark 1.0.exe" was 0.

Long story short, i didn't get the file i was promised.

Yet i was certainly offered a lot of potentially damaging crap along the way.
Had i not been cautious during this process, it seems certain i would have been saddled with at least some of it.
One analysis (see reports at bottom) by ClamAV calls the downloader a "Possibly Unwanted Application".
Kingsoft calls it "Win32.Troj.Generic.a.(kcloud)".  NOD32 calls it "a variant of Win32/FreeNew.B".

To me, in my own humble opinion, other seemingly deceptive inclusions appear to potentially be spyware.
Unbeknownst to me until i later noticed the still-present icon, it was running in the SystemTray.

I do not accept the Appstore Downloader EULA and have destroyed my copy in compliance with said EULA.
There is no agreement, and even if any was temporarily in effect, it is immediately terminated.
I will never use your store again.  One unpleasant experience is enough.

Note to MS:'Crapware' downloaders do not inspire confidence in your store.
Is this typical of other downloads from your store?
If so, and if i was a developer, i would be screaming!

Known Issue:

It would appear that the installation of drivers relating to ATi/AMD's HD-Series cause errors in Event Viewer.
It remains unknown to me the consequences of these errors.

Babyboy has an elegant solution that involves adding both Both KB2538242 & KB2538243 Visual C++ 2k5/2k8 installers to the $OEM$ folder and adding their entries into cmdlines.txt as previously described by OverFlow here.

Updated below.

Note that these tests are indeed also applicable to a DP_Base integrated NT5 Install from a virgin source with no updates added (including DirectX).

Standard Tests

1) First as i reach the Desktop for the first time, i search for setup*.log, dp*.log and save all logs found except setup.log.  Then i copy them to the desktop.

2) After a restart, i run dxdiag & "Save All Information" to the desktop in the file DxDiag.txt.

3) I then check "Add & Remove Programs" to confirm proper installation.

4) After, i check "Device Manager" (devmgmt.msc) to verify driver installation and WHQL status.
If something is not right, <Alt><Print Screen> will copy the current window contents to the clipboard.
Then i create a New Bitmap File, right-click, edit it, paste the clipboard contents, and save as PNG.
It is certainly possible for Device Manager to not report the actual version of a driver installed.
Verify file dates and versions versus those in the DxDiag.txt report.

5) After, i check "Event Viewer" (eventvwr.msc) to check for driver-related errors.
If any are found, i right-click on "System" and "Application" and "Save Log File as.." CSV to the Desktop.

6) Then i run "Export_XML_Report" using Geeks3D's GPU Caps Viewer.
This "report.xml" is copied to the desktop.
Next, i verify function of the Graphics Adapter with only the included relevant tests.
To know which tests should work, i check the OpenGL version & OpenCL information.

7) For PhysX testing, i use Geeks3D's FluidMark.  This allows testing of PhysX-CPU-only installations such as GeForce 6 & 7 Series too.

8) Finally, i copy all generated logs, pictures & reports to my USB Thumb drive for later analysis.

9) DXVA capabilities can be viewed utilizing Bluesky's DXVA Checker.

10) Basic temperature and possibly fan speed data can be obtained with CPUID's Hardware Monitor.

11) D-P-C Latency Tester (linked in signature) can be used to identify problem hardware and/or drivers.

Missing:  1) DirectX testing and/or reporting other than DxDiag.
              2) Additional tests for NT6.x

AmIcoSinglun is Run successfully according to Task Manager.
However; no icons are visible with MS, CF, nor SD.
Also, it doesn't terminate when the CardReader device is Safely removed.

It would appear that there is more necessary.
Sadly, i am out of time presently to concentrate upon icons.

I will simply comment-out the section [Al] in the DriverPack_Misc_wnt5_x86-32.ini
and retain the new files in DP_Misc_wnt5_x86-32_1307291.7z for testing.

If you have any suggestions, i will gladly implement, test, and credit you in changelogs, at minimum.

My apologies to Admin for being Off Topic.

There is a newer set of packs in the Testing Team forum.  DP_Graphics_3dfx-ATi is deprecated with them.
They should become public soon.     smile

An older version of that driver exists in DP_Misc_wnt5_x86-32
You can expect the newer driver in the next DP_Misc Nightly.     smile
