Bâshrat the Sneaky DriverPacks uses standard documented and approved MS windows OEM driver installation techniques (if you use method one)

so it is not a third party install it is a standard MS install the we automate / prepare for you.

so you can use DriverPacks if you use method one. Method one does not alter windows it enables Microsofts built in support for OEM's.

(if you can use WPI then you can use DriverPacks they both use OEM installs they just automate it for you)

not out of the question at all - some background and education was needed.

try raid mode please and report...

SI has been a thorn in our side for quite some time now.
perhaps your input will help in a final resolution.

try toggleing the mode of the Silicon image 3531 controller (raid / base)

rewritable DVD's are an invaluable asset...

Were glad you stopped in and posted...
Thanks for being here! We're glad to try and help.

It is the general consensus around here that Vista is a major memory hog.
It seems to need about a gig of ram by itself,
most people have reported two gig of ram is a nice number to start with.

so to keep your laptop perky running Vista you might want to check into that...

Have a great day, jeff

i like ghost 8.3 corp and have several companies setup with a dedicated ghost backup server
they image key servers weekly during a maintanance window
i use an AT command to replace the boot.ini . reboot to a ghost boot partition then restore the boot.ini.
then image the primary partition to the raid array on the ghost server and reboot.

Its money in the bank if disaster strikes.

and you don't have to wonder if somebody fed the darnd thing a tape.

well my WPI install is like 75 programs and takes 30 minutes to run and executes 3 reboots. so my install takes a little over an hour to install windows and all the apps on a half way decent machine.

like i said i am a big fan of ghost its definately faster but i still will stick to my guns
A clean load can't be beaten. I'll burn the extra time for the load.
especially a clean load that is updated monthly (i update my disk monthly since it only takes about 15~20 minutes.)

It is not like i have to watch it wink

i dont know that everyone does this or is amused as easily as me but...
WPI will play a song while it is loading,
my install takes 30 minutes so...
I play "shine on you crazy diamond" by pink floyd because it's around 27 minutes long and plays once.
so when the music stops i know my install is done (meaning i don't even need a monitor or to even be in the same room to know if its working and when it's done)
and it tests my sound drivers  - hee hee

did you use driverpacks to install? did you use the third party driverpack for modems?

if the answer to these questions is no perhaps you should read our FAQ
adding drivers after install here -->
http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=2264

Read before you post in my signature if you did use DriverPacks

Thank you!

the devices are your dual core processor and your dialup modem

try installing the chipset driver from intel or your OEM

try installing the OEM modem driver

PS almost every program you can think of has been added to WPI over the years.
You won't need to reinvent the wheel - somebody has already posted a method to automate the install of almost any progams you may need to install. If not they will fall over themselfs to help you... smile

By George I think he's got it!

Sysprep is such a PITA, I would just rather reload each time rather than fight with it, and i belive it results in a cleaner final product.

I still use Ryans OLD integrator and will wait for the beta to go gold before I use it in prodution (same with XP SP3).
for the latest updates you have to check on his rss feeds page.  http://tracker.ryanvm.net/
For windows updates that are not yet out from RyanVM you can use nLite to add them (That is what I do)

I have a script that I wrote and use for slipstreaming updates to office
http://www.msfn.org/board/Office-Patche … 89038.html

I am not sure who is working on the sound packs ATM
I am betting that jakeld or jaak will throw a test pack at you soon.

Can you tell us which driver is the one that works?
it is possable we can add your HWID to the inf of the driver that does work

the HWID reported matches genericaly with 79 drivers in our packs (PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5)

windows thinks it is a realtek - google says it is a Sound Max - you report it is a Vinyl...
basically they are all based on the same chipset (VEN_8086 is an intel designed chip)
intel sells the rights to remanufacture the sound chip and the purchasing OEM then has the option of "tweaking it" within certain guidelines.

In most cases a generic match for a driver will work just fine. (because it is basicaly the same chip)
Are you just annoyed that it reports the wrong name or is the driver not working?
more info on that if it doesn't work please.

there is no match for the specific HWID in the packs (PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5&SUBSYS_84011584)
If the driver is not working at all you will need to provide us a link to the one that does.

Laptops are always a pain because the OEM's often modify the basic chipset to conserve power
or for whatever other reason they like. if that is the case usually a reference driver (generic driver) will fail to work and only the OEM will be able to provide the driver. If Vista is the only OS that is supported for your laptop then you may be out of luck if the reference driver fails.

better method is now posted in the FAQ forum

Great question.

I would like to start out by saying I am a huge fan of ghost. I always Ghost every machine I repair before I touch it.
Ghost is great if you have bought 20 new machines that are identical. Ghost casting rocks!

I almost never use ghost to load machines anymore. Ghost images are HAL and HDD controller dependent.
(unless you put a LOT of time / work into it)

I am of the mindset that if a machine has gone south and needs reloaded it probably also needs to have the CPU fan dusted and the cards and cables thumbed and power supply fan checked. That's just me... I like to be thorough.
so since I'm there i just drop in a DVD and go to lunch. wink

I have creating UWXPCD (or DVD) down to a science and can spit one out in about 20 min or less. modifying that image for a specific domain or user name log-in only requires editing the winnt.sif file (in which case burning takes longer than the edit!)

basic lineup is

1st   RyanVM integrator - for windows update slipstreaming
2nd  nLite - for unattended XP settings
3rd  DriverPacks (you are here wink )
4th  WPI (Windows Post Installer) For automating end user application installs like office and adobe.
5th  Use nLite to create an ISO (which I left running after step two) .

everything you ever wanted to know about UWXPCD can be found at MSFN.org
http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/

RIS and UWXPCD are not mutually exclusive.
Our Friend RogueSpear has a program that makes a RIS source using your UWXPCD.
That program is called AutoImage.
http://www.doitrightconsulting.net/forum/

RIS is indispensable if you are not on site.
I configure my machines to use the boot ROM on the NIC if the HDD fails to boot.
I remote in and cause an issue that will make the machine fail to boot to the HDD and restart it.
Since I have a fully unattended image setup with all drivers and applications my image will work on ANY machine with a boot ROM enabled NIC. What could be easier?

IMHO

the only downside to this might be time.
I can Ghost a machine in about 30 minutes and a fresh install takes a little over an hour.

thanks jaak your awsome!
