Topic: BASE1006 Mass+Chip1206, nLite w/NOdrivers: 0x7B Dell Inspiron1525 Sata

I suspect that I have made a "schoolboy error" as it was my first attempt - apologies to the veterans - I assume that is a complementary phrase in your respective nationalities.

Started with XP SP3, nLite'd with XAble's July MS fixes but *no* drivers as per (many) directives...

I then used DPs_BASE1006 w/Mass+Chip1206 - log inc..

I *then* used the tool at http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/120444- … -with-gui/ to transfer the folder onto a bootable USB memory stick.

When I use the stick in a Dell Inspiron 1525 set to IDE-mode then it all works but when I try it with the BIOS set to Sata-mode the install fails as it tries to do the "final" boot.
The success with IDE-mode makes me *think* that I have got most of the basics right but obviously not.
The symptom of the failure is BSoD 0x7B after mup.sys and the HDD drivers listed before were iastor3 and atapide? The iastor3.sys is certain - I didn't make a note of the ide one. You suggest the following is attached ini + log :

The above was *not* in a subfolder (/Logfile?) as indicated in your "new topic" guide which made me check DP_Base versions - the *code* i.e. .exe had a version of 3.3.4 which confused me but I assume 1006 in the downloaded file name of DPs_BASE_1006.

Welcome to DriverPacks!

To be fair, it looks like you did most things right. 
Because your setup found the HDD during textmode setup phase but BSOD during hand-off to the GUI phase tells me there's something not right in our dpms.
Can you post the HWIDs from this target system?  You can use the HWID tool in my signature.

I'm curious why you would specify the KTD location to the target system "D" drive.  When you partitioned the drive did you create both a C & D partitions?

I always keep Data as separate as possible from Windows - it isn't always easy but I try.
I will however confess that I wasn't sure whether it was the *Target* XP system or the creator - either way I knew there would be a 'D' drive and I wasn't sure exactly what the contents would be and therefore how 'tied' to the target it should be or indeed if it would be an aid to refreshing a (corrupt?) XP system sometime later.

It would be best to disable the KTD option.  It causes more problems than it solves.
Are you sure that HWID list is from your Dell 1525?  It looks as if zero drivers were installed!  Normally for a Dell notebook I would expect to see some ACPI\DLL**** devices.

The drive controller in the above HWID list is supported by dpms \D\M\I3\, an old driver that we haven't had problems with for years.

I will disable the KTD option when I do a re-build but I need to make sure that you have the right info' to be working upon because the total process is approx. 3 hours - half of which is the "burn to Flash USB drive".

Because the tool you provide is looking at *hardware* IDs I assumed that I could run it in an XP PE environment (a descendant of BartPE I think) which will obviously have no specific drivers and certainly none from DriverPack.

Obviously because the latest XP ("made" when in Sata) doesn't boot the Dell in Sata mode (0x7B) I cannot run your tool as it is currently set-up and I just briefly tried to switch the BIOS to ATA (IDE) mode even though stage 1 and 2 (Text and PE?) were done with it set to SATA and it fails 0x7B even though ATAPI is loaded just before IASTOR3.

What I *can* do is to restore the Ghost image that I made when everything was done in ATA mode and run your tool in that (SP3 + nL + DP etc.) XP environment and re-post its output. Just FYI when I looked in Device Manager on that XP system there were lots of unknown devices that I would have *hoped* that your Chipset pack would have resolved - is that a clue to the problem? I also remember from "read before posting" that you wanted setupapi.log or a similar name - I assumed that my choice of Method caused it not to be created - hence I attached a list of the files in C:\.

My guess is that there will be something in what I have typed above which gives you a clue as to what mistake(S?) I have made - and even if not - you may have another question or two as a result... Thanks for all your help... OldB

Just in case anyone else sees this and wants to reply or use what has been said so far...

I now *have* used exactly the same USB stick on a "spare" PC that needed a new XP and that *did work with SATA" in fact the ICH7 chipset is very visible in device manager on an Acer - 3-4 year old (2007-9ish). It went through all 3 stages without a hitch - I even saw a brief splash of KTP post-op work. So maybe this post should be moved to the MSS section of this forum if the moderator agrees.

Can anyone point me at a site or even just a good set of words/phrases for a Google search so that I can find out what this Dell has "under the hood" in terms of Chipset etc. just in case that can give me a clue?

Any chance that the CPU DP would have helped just in case that stopped drivers being discovered? Although when I think - the install worked in IDE/ATA mode even if very few drivers were found so maybe not - thoughts anyone? OldB.

Oddly, the dell website has the older version of the driver here:
As expected, there is no difference between that driver and the one we have in \D\M\I3\ (other than we have the newer version).
To see your system configuration, put your "service tag" info into this page:

Try rebuilding your XP source.  Nothing fancy, just a vanilla XP source and DriverPacks BASE with DriverPack Chipset & dpms.  Use Method-2 and be sure to enable textmode.  Disable QSC and KTD options.
Report back if successful.

Can I assume that this output isn't really just looking at HW IDs but at what drivers are assigned to them - hence you needed the tool to run in the *target* installed XP system rather than the PE that I *could* boot?

Obviously my aim is *non* vanilla SP3 so I am now trying my nLited SP3 with Method 2, Chip+MSS, Disabled QSC+KTD, presumably leaving the file system intact (i.e. Multi-Boot) isn't a problem during testing what does and doesn't work?

Any thoughts on why the original build worked on an Acer tower (ICH7 chipset) and yet not on a Dell Laptop welcome from anyone - even guesses as it might inspire a "line of enquiry"...

Just one other Q - I can't remember if I did this *but* - when using method 1 - does the source CD (in my case USB) *need* to be kept in the drive as the 3rd stage of install (GUI? after PE after Text)? There is just a *chance* that I took the USB stick out so that it didn't "interfere" with the GUI Boot - what symptoms would you expect or entries in (which/where) log files etc.? I *doubt* that I made this mistake as I tried the build twice at least and would have to have made the same mistake 2-3 times.

Thanks for the assistance so far - my instincts are that this latest build will be OK (hope!) but it would be nice to understand what went wrong but I don't expect anyone to delve into the KTD or QSC aspects of this if they aren't that useful - they just appeared to offer some benefits when I looked at their features... Having multiple OS on the same drive isn't a problem in itself, provided that there's no problems with each OS that would prevent it from booting (BSOD).

Yes, removing the OS install source during any phase of the install would cause a critical failure because not all the source files are copied to the target drive.  The installer looks to the original install source for certain files throughout the install process.
The only time it's safe to remove the install medium is after first login and you're sitting at the desktop and all is quiet. wink

The nLited XP SP3 has now been through DriverPacks BASE Mass+Chip w/Method 2 and *no* KTD or QSC and it DID install OK from a USB pen drive as a 3rd XP system on the drive and the HDD controllers show up as ICH8 in the target system's device manager.

Just FYI the three XP installations *do* appear to co-exist OK even though the earliest I saved *does crash* with 0x7B and when you choose it (from boot.ini) it does offer Safe Mode etc. as it knows the last start failed for THAT XP.
I only mention it as it seemed like a useful approach (leave file system intact during very early prompt by XP install text mode) so that it relatively easy to compare and re-test - obviously *not* for anything other than test builds.

I had assumed that the media (CD / USB) was not required with *Method 1* during the 3rd (GUI) stage but just *maybe* I did take the USB stick out rather than having it launch Grub4DOS etc. to then drop into booting the HDD.
Obviously I had misread the features / description of Method 1 or at least misinterpreted them.

Many thanks for your assistance - I had expected that there would be other people with ideas or input but obviously they leave this section to yourself to moderate / respond. Maybe I should have raised it in the MSS section instead. Again thanks - OldB.

Hello, i see a similar issue on my Inspiron 1525 (same HWid's as above).

Instead of $7B, i do not reach the partitioning phase.  I see "Setup cannot find a previous version of Windows installed."  I used Rufus to build my USB stick.  Textmode is using [I3], GUI to use dps6AHCI.inf within [I6].

When i burnt my newest image on a DVD+RW, textmode sees my HDD OK ([I3] for textmode, dps7AHCI.inf in [I7] for GUI).

152626 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on iastor3 [MBR]

I will update this after (hopefully) a full install.  hmm

Installing from a DVD+RW worked like a charm.  Driver v7.8.0.1012 is installed; although not what i had hoped, yet understandable considering dps6AHCI, dps6Stor, dps7AHCI & dps7Stor.inf are non-WHQL'ed and depreciated by Windows because of this.

The "new" driver (v11.2) worked, yes, although i have to update it manually and both the driver and executable are seen as non-WHQL, despite the executables being signed.

I have been able to replicate my issue of a non-visible HDD using AHCI.

I used the same ISO file as the one used successfully on a DVD+RW disc.
I used Rufus to burn this image on a thumbdrive.
It saw the partition that i wanted to install on, and had previously, configured as AHCI.
I deleted that partition after booting my thumbdrive.
I then created a new partition.
The next step was to restart using <F3>.

Upon restart, after the drivers loaded, i was presented with the same error message "Setup cannot find a previous version of Windows installed."

I restarted with the previously made DVD+RW (same ISO) and was greeted with a visible drive.
I deleted that partition and created a new one.

A restart with the thumbdrive instead of the DVD+RW yielded the same error.
At the error page (it requests the Windows CD, BTW) i inserted the disc, a couple of files were read, then the partition was visible.  The odd thing is that the thumbdrive is seen as a second drive, yet is listed first (that is the odd thing).

Works on ODD fails at USB...

Seems to be Error @ usb preparation.

However, this error may be related to DriverPacks BASE not updating the layout.inf or some other catalog type files.

I do not blame DP_BASE.  I "blame" Rufus.  Everything is the same other than the media used and file layout.
  If i can find which two files are read from the disc, they can be manually copied onto the root of the thumbdrive, then this issue is history.

don't be so quick to be sure...

I had this issue with BartPE too... I wondered why PEBuilder did not copy the files that were added to the I386 folder from a source slipstreamed with DriverPack MassStorage to the PE build... the answer was related to the files PEbuilder uses to figure out what to copy... one of those files was layout.inf... If they are using a similar method then the issue may be a result of our lazyness tongue.  We update enough files to make it work for what we do, but we do not update it as well as say a service pack would big_smile.

Maybe i was a little hasty.

the other file was setupp.ini.  I have to read these as they load off the disc.
...venturing to get my camera's battery charged to "tape" it to be certain.

a look in layout.inf reveals no dosnet.inf reference.
here is the reference to setupp.ini:

setupp.ini   = 1,,63,,,,_x,,3,3

The full error screen reads:

I copied layout.inf, dosnet.inf, & setupp.ini to the root of the thumbdrive to no avail.

Edit:  Did OldB find one of those 1-in-a-million "bug"s in BASE?

definately not...

DriverPacks BASE is designed to do a very specific task... integrate drivers into a NT5 ODD based unattended setup.

To use it for anything else is not supported. Therefore no BUG.

HOWEVER we could always improve the process if it makes sense tongue.
