Topic: [SLVD] SATA 6.0Gb/s drivers for XP?

I've been trying a lot of different things to get XP to install on the following new build:

AMD A8-3850 Llano 2.9GHz Socket FM1 100W Quad-Core Desktop APU
ASRock A75M FM1 AMD A75 (Hudson D3) HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W Continuous power ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply
Kingston 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory
APEX TX-381-C Black Steel Micro ATX Tower Computer Case
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKX 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

I'm trying to install XP from a USB stick, but I get a bluescreen with 0x0000007B. I have my motherboard set to IDE mode for the hard disk, so that's not the problem. I'm assuming it's a driver issue, as that seems to be what the error code indicates, and XP does not by default have SATA 6.0Gb/s support. I tried installing after adding all your latest driver packs, but I'm still having no luck. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks in advance ~

Re: [SLVD] SATA 6.0Gb/s drivers for XP?

#1 - ensure that the mobo has the latest BIOS.  http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=A75M
*** Beware - improperly applied BIOS updates can 'brick' your HW!  If you're not 100% confident, skip it.

Find the 'F6' Floppy image for your MassStorage device, perhaps.  Maybe like this one ftp://174.142.97.10/drivers/AMD/SATA/Fl … .0292).zip

Mind you, the AHCI drivers appear to be WHQL'ed for Win2k3.  Perhaps if you ask nicely, mr_smartepants might make one of his well-penned custom .inf's to assist you.

Please send us details about your HWID's, so we may be able to help further. big_smile

Re: [SLVD] SATA 6.0Gb/s drivers for XP?

Hi, thanks for your help; unfortunately, I am a little unfamiliar with some of the things that you are talking about.

How does this 'F6' Floppy image work exactly? The link you have posted seems to have a lot of mentions of 64, and I'm trying to install XP 32 bit (I am aware that half my ram will be useless) from an 8GB kingston stick. I'm not quite sure what to look for here.

What exactly are the implications of drivers being WHQL'ed? Wikipedia seems to think that this will prevent them from generating warning messages.

Lastly, a quick search has not turned up much about how I obtain my HWIDs without having windoze installed. Ubuntu 11.04 is running quite contentedly on this machine right now but it doesn't look like I can obtain this information without having windoze running. Having just learned what a HWID is anyway, it seems like a(nother) frustrating and extremely anal attempt at reducing piracy from microsoft - sigh.

I'm a little apprehensive about updating the BIOS, never having attempted it before, but I think I'll give it a shot here and see how it goes.

Thanks again ~

HWID's simply describe the VENdor & DEVice.  They are supposed to be unique & distinct for each and every hardware type (I read - chip).

There are at least two unique HWID's for your MassStorage controller.  The ID depends upon whether it is in Compatibility Mode, AHCI, or AHCI-RAID.

I see that if the AHCI-RAID mode is set, the F6 floppy has a driver that is WHQL'ed for WinXP_x86.  You may need to plug in a Floppy drive for the install, though.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314859

I wonder if your driver CD that came with the mobo will have drivers on it that will apply during 'F6'.
If it does have WHQL'ed drivers for XP, could you share, please?  Best to do this as a request to add a driver - see the Forum Rules.

Re: [SLVD] SATA 6.0Gb/s drivers for XP?

Phew, successfully updated the bios from 1.20 to 1.50! Same bluescreen though.

My SATA BIOS options are as follows:
SATA Controller: Enabled/Disabled (currently enabled)
SATA Mode: IDE/RAID/AHCI (currently IDE)
SATA IDE Combined Mode: Enabled/Disabled (currently enabled)

After some more research into this F6 floppy business I'm about to attempt to nLite the motherboard's Windows XP drivers into my XP installation and try again. This seems promising - thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: [SLVD] SATA 6.0Gb/s drivers for XP?

No need to update a BIOS unless the new one fixes a problem that you are experiencing.  BIOS updates are very tricky and could permanently break your PC.

HWIDs are HardWare IDs and only contain info to identify the manufacturer and device, not the user.  They contain VENdor, DEVice, and SUBSYStem codes.
a valid HWID will look like

PCI\VEN_1095&DEV_3112&SUBSYS_61121095&REV_02\4&1F7DBC9F&0&58F0
Name: Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATARaid Controller
    Hardware ID's:
        PCI\VEN_1095&DEV_3112&SUBSYS_61121095&REV_02
        PCI\VEN_1095&DEV_3112&SUBSYS_61121095
        PCI\VEN_1095&DEV_3112&CC_010400
        PCI\VEN_1095&DEV_3112&CC_0104
    Compatible ID's:
        PCI\VEN_1095&DEV_3112&REV_02
        PCI\VEN_1095&DEV_3112
        PCI\VEN_1095&CC_010400
        PCI\VEN_1095&CC_0104

NO! STOP!  Do NOT use nlite!  We never recommend any user use nlite for drivers, the opposite in fact!  Nlite does drivers very messy and will compromise your XP build so that DriverPacks will never work unless you start over with a fresh source.
Did you even attempt to use DriverPacks as part of your XP integration?  You didn't mention it and you also didn't post any log files like we requested in the forum Rules (see my signature).
Please post your log files and HWID list so we can help you more efficiently.

For unsupported USB Floppy drives http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916196/en-us
could i simply add these lines to the [HardwareIdsDatabase] section of TXTSETUP.SIF, and re-burn my image?

USB\VID_03F0&PID_2001 = "usbstor" #HP-USB-Floppy
USB\VID_054C&PID_002C = "usbstor" #Sony-USB-Floppy
USB\VID_057B&PID_0001 = "usbstor" #Y-E-Data USB-Floppy
USB\VID_0409&PID_0040 = "usbstor" #NEC-USB-Floppy
USB\VID_0424&PID_0FDC = "usbstor" #SMSC-USB-Floppy
USB\VID_08BD&PID_1100 = "usbstor" #IOmega-USB-Floppy
USB\VID_055D&PID_2020 = "usbstor" #Samsung-USB-Floppy

or even to add these following lines to the [HardwareIds.SCSI.xxx] section of  'txtsetup.oem'?

id = "USB\VID_03F0&PID_2001", "usbstor" #HP-USB-Floppy
id = "USB\VID_054C&PID_002C", "usbstor" #Sony-USB-Floppy

id = "USB\VID_0424&PID_0FDC", "usbstor" #SMSC-USB-Floppy
id = "USB\VID_08BD&PID_1100", "usbstor" #IOmega-USB-Floppy

Righty. I have not started nLite yet. Thanks for the advice.

So I now have a pretty good grasp of what a HWID is. I just need to find out how I find out what HWIDs are so I can relay them to you. My Google searches are coming up empty with regards to a way to do this through Ubuntu. They suggest booting windows from USB or something, I guess I'll look into that.

Here's the log file, sorry I didn't post it before. The usb_multiboot_10 log is here if that's helpful too.

Thanks very much for your time - you've helped point me in the right direction, and I have several more areas to google now. There were some things I was overlooking that I feel kind of stupid about. Sorry about the unclear posts, I've been working on this problem for quite awhile now and it's starting to run together in my head. Time to get some sleep and start again tomorrow.

Rats, I really thought I had it this time. I got my F6 driver from here; it downloaded folders for AHCI and RAID. I took the XP_AHCI folder and made a 3rd party driver pack with it by following your instructions in the subforum. No dice. I probably should have tried putting the RAID one in there too, in retrospect.

I'm working on making a bootable windows USB stick now, which will at the very least hopefully allow me to find my HWIDs, I guess.

Re: [SLVD] SATA 6.0Gb/s drivers for XP?

Mass Storage drivers can't be made into Third Party DriverPacks because of how DriverPacks BASE is written.  dpms makes very special changes to key boot files, no other DriverPacks make those special changes.  That's what allows the hard drives to be "seen" during setup.

So the drivers you attempted to use were from here? http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?M … M&o=XP
We REALLY need your HWID list though.  Use the tool linked in my signature.

BTW, the drivers supplied by ASrock are identical to the ones in dpms 11.08.
I think the problem is the difference between AHCI/RAID mode...or possibly the USB drive itself.

I'm trying to install XP from a USB stick, but I get a bluescreen with 0x0000007B.

How far goes install? When do you get a BSOD?
BSOD 0x7B refers to boot drive. This may be the USB stick in that case.

Read the FAQ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/116766-faqs/
And use a USB 2.0 connector at the motherboard.

Re: [SLVD] SATA 6.0Gb/s drivers for XP?

Yes.  Does the BSOD happen during a traditional DVD install?
At what point does the BSOD happen?  Before the drives are detected, or during the install process, or after install but before the desktop loads?

Please accept my profuse apologies for being a numbskull and wasting all of your time.

*sigh*

XP Pro Setup is formatting the drive now; hopefully the rest of the install goes smoothly.

Thanks very much for your time, and again, I'm very sorry to have bothered you all.

Re: [SLVD] SATA 6.0Gb/s drivers for XP?

Glad it's working for you.  Marking as solved...
