Topic: [IMPL] establish a "Windows 8 Discussion" forum

Windows 8 x86,x64,ARM to be outed by end of 2k12.  DriversPacks might need to eventually add new sections.
Good to look ahead to ensure DP's relevant even after MS is gone (perish the thought). smile

quote from http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2 … rdware.ars :

ARM Windows won't include an x86 emulator, and as such will not be able to run existing Windows programs. It is, however, the same operating system with the same APIs, meaning that it should be possible to recompile existing software and device drivers for ARM Windows with few difficulties.

ARM device drivers (Hauppage, etc) need to be recompiled for new instructions(anyone have an OMAP4470, SnapDragon, etc. re-compiler?).  If only an 'auto-compiler' could be woven together - even if only just for x86 device drivers (usb peripheral - mostly).  I wonder also if the win8_x86_x64 could end up becoming a subset of Vista-7. hmm

Epson has printer drivers for 8 --> http://ces2011.techradar.com/2011/01/wh … windows-8/

Jungo's already got drivers for ARM, just not the OMAP4470; soon, soon --> http://www.jungo.com/st/embedded_usb_usb3.html
they have a cosy relationship with TI, somehow Oxford Semi/PLX is in the mix.

Beta may be released within a month or so.  http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2011/08 … ws-8-beta/
Am i the only one who's noticed that Mr. Ballmer looks an awful lot like Peter Boyle? http://macdailynews.com/2006/06/08/what … d_ballmer/ lol

Not many folks can claim John Lennon as a Best Man for their wedding!  https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ … eter_Boyle

Win_8 graphics drivers to use WDDM v1.2.  INF files need to have NTx86.6.2 or NTx64.6.2 for HWID's.  Just a 'head's up' for future considerations. big_smile

Perhaps the Win8 forum should be divided in two - one for ARM variants, of which there may be several, and one for x86 & x64 hardware.

Re: [IMPL] establish a "Windows 8 Discussion" forum

MS has hinted that a pre-release developer build may be made available to the public.  http://www.winrumors.com/microsoft-hint … s-8-build/

I understand that most are still on holidays, yet hopefully some decisions can be made, soon. hmm

Re: [IMPL] establish a "Windows 8 Discussion" forum

When I talked to an Intel engineer last week he said W8 would only be available in 64 bit.

Re: [IMPL] establish a "Windows 8 Discussion" forum

Abput time!
Seeing as MSFT's server OSes are already 64bit-only, it's a logical step.
And it even more enforces HW manufacturers to supply 645bit drivers, though the situation has eased up a lot lately.

Still, it would be nice to have 64 bit drivers for some legacy hardware - on 32 bit you can even use XP 32 bit drivers on Win7 (for non-Kernel drivers) but that obviously won't work on Win7 64 bit (as there are hardly any drivers for XP 64 tongue)...

Re: [IMPL] establish a "Windows 8 Discussion" forum

wow i haven't even written an app for nt6 yet...

So is win8 going to be NT 6.3 or NT 7?

That will decide how we add it to the forum

Re: [IMPL] establish a "Windows 8 Discussion" forum

NTx86.6.2 or NTx64.6.2 AFIK  & the 'ARM' versions.  BUILD may help provide concrete answers.

I think MS is under the gun to get this finished ASAP, Apple's hurting the rest of the consumer market.  An 'ARMy' of well-educated Chinese programmers will likely surprise (maybe shock) everyone.

HP's webOS tablets are being discontinued, & dropped in price to $99.00 CDN!!!

"Windows 8 - I'd chew my 'ARM' off rather than admit it was MY idea!"  Windows 8 is just a code-name, for now BTW. big_smile

Re: [IMPL] establish a "Windows 8 Discussion" forum

Windows 8 will offer native USB 3.0 support.  Referenced here --> http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-co … -windows-8

A good guess may be that a native stack will be included, as it was with USB 2.0 & windows XP.

Driverpacks.net has USB 3.0 drivers already included for Win 2k, XP, 2k3, Vista, 2k8, 2k8R2 & 7, BTW.

Re: [IMPL] establish a "Windows 8 Discussion" forum

Any chance new cat signatures may be used in NT6.2?  NIST advises hashing algorithms  based on SHA-256 or higher.  I do so hope the crypto-strength gets improved as i see 'Clouds-on-the-cheap' nearer than the horizon, so to speak.

With USB 3.0 providing full backwards compatibility, older drivers will still work without any changes.
