Topic: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

Sorry if this is not the proper place to post this.

I have an Asus N82J that will boot fine using the driverpacks but the USB 3.0 is not available.  I normally just use the MassStorage driver packs.  When I did this, the laptop booted but not only could I not see the USB 3.0 drive, I could not see the CD Rom.  Doing a search on the forums led me to including the latest Chipset pack (10.11).  When booted, the USB 3.0 is not available but the CD Rom issue was solved.

mr_smartepants wrote:

USB 3 drivers are not included in DriverPack MassStorage for "textmode"

I am not sure if that means that they cannot be included or they are not currently included.

Any suggestions on being able to see the USB 3.0 port would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Here are my HWIDs:

Re: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

I might be able to fix this... i disabled a module in base that would copy chipset drivers to the INF folder in windows. At that time there was no benifit. Perhaps now with USB3 out there is now a good reason to RE-enable that routine... smile

I'm going to add ou to the testing team so you can access the new BASE... you will have to wait a minute for me to punch out a new version with that module re-enabled

Re: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

Well, IIRC, the USB3 drivers can't be used as a boot device unless the system uses a UEFI-based motherboard instead of the older BIOS-based boards.
Also, USB3 hardware uses discrete chips instead of built into the "southbridge".  USB2 wasn't bootable until it migrated to the "southbridge" host controller.
I'm sure someone else with greater hardware knowledge than I will post here with a better reason.  But that's what I believe to be true.

@bonehead_coder

Can you clarify:
do you like working USB 3.0 drivers at fully installed XP?
do you require working USB 3.0 drivers at textmode part?

Does your BIOS support booting from USB3.0 ports?

How do you install XP?

as for textmode part, I would try (not tested, here no USB3.0 boot BIOS)

Re: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

Ah OK...

It's a Bus extender... So reenableing chipset in INF will not help.

It will have to be added to mass storage as a bus extender

Thanks a million cdob (again)

Actually it's not a bus extender. Driver inf use 'base'.

Default usbehci and usbhub are loaded at [InputDevicesSupport.Load].

Installation TO USB is a special case, hence the Bus extender.
And more settings are required.

The big question: why are USB3.0 required at textmode?

Let's assume installing from a USB CD ROM drive. The manufactuer support this at USB 2.0.
Add USB3.0 support for this case. This includes install from a USB stick too.

Idea: use mass storage default [SCSI.load]. No need to change DriverPacks Base.
Include USB3.0 drivers to DriverPacks MassStorage. Marked as textmode, Base should include drivers by default.
This has to be tested.

Re: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

@All

Wow, you guys went over my head quickly!

@cdob

Actually, I'm building a troubleshooting boot disk so I'm not really doing an install.  I can boot from the USB 3.0 port but once it is up, it is like the USB 3.0 port does not exist.

@All

I build both a BartPE and a WinPE 3 version.  My latest try was with the WinPE (32 bit) and adding the MassStorage/Chipset 10.11 packs (via DISM).  I have a bunch of utilities on the USB that are not part of the boot.wim (to keep it small).  Once up, I needed to access the utilities that I have stored on the USB.  That is where my issue came up since I "couldn't find the USB 3.0 drive".

I have not tried adding the Chipset pack to BartPE version.  I can rebuild using either flavor or packs (NT5/NT6).

Does this refer to WinPE 3?
That's expected at default drivers. BIOS routines are used to load boot.wim to RAM.
PE boot from RAM disk. There is no USB 3.0 driver required to boot.
And without USB 3.0 drivers, a booted PE can't access USB 3.0 controller.

I build both a BartPE

Add drivers as a PEBuilder plugin. Compare previous link. Other users reported success.
Be aware, old plugin refers to NEC drivers, not to Renesaes drivers.

and a WinPE 3 version.

This section is about: 'Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 DriverPacks (wnt5_x86-32)'
Difficult to guess WinPE 3.

My latest try was with the WinPE (32 bit) and adding the MassStorage/Chipset 10.11 packs (via DISM).

There are no USB3.0 drivers at Vista/7 (x86) DriverPacks.
Use dism and include USB3.0 drivers yourself to boot.wim.

I have not tried adding the Chipset pack to BartPE version.

Don't do this.

Re: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

@cdob

Sorry, I think I confused everyone with my previous posts.  My WinPE is a bootable USB and my BartPE is a bootable CD.  Neither could see the USB 3 port.

@all

Ok, I'm an idiot.  I went back and re-read the posts above and I figured out what you guys were saying.   Using the WinPE (just because I can build it quicker), I added the NEC 3 USB drivers (downloaded from Asus) using DISM.  I removed adding any other driverpacks (chipset/massstorage) and sure enough, I was able to boot and use the USB port (actually had a USB 2 Thumb installed and could read from it).

I did not do the same on BartPE disk but assume it will work the same way.

My question is should the chipset/massstorage drivers be updated to support these or is this just a "one-off" that I need to deal with for my situation?

Re: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

You will need to manually add the usb driver to your PE disc.

No problem.  Thanks for your help.  Feel free to mark this as solved.

Re: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

I just spent the last few hours reading various posts.. still trying to understand how all this fits.  In a nutshell, i am trying to get USB3 to work on a notebook.  This post comes close to what i am looking for but i'm a little lost on the last post by OverFlow.  How do i manually add the usb driver to the PE disc?  Is there a guide you can point me to?

From reading other posts, i was wondering if the following would work.  BTW, i am using BartPE.

1) Use Base Driverpack to slipstream the Chipset package into the XP Image (i.e. Installation platform = Disc, Method=2)
2) Then use Base Driverpack again and use BartPE as my Installation platform and integrate Mass Storage text mode.

Is this ok or is this a no no?

If i'm not making sense, let me know, i'll go do more reading.

Thanks!

Re: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

You will find that the latest packs already contain recent NEC/Renesas USB3 drivers, just not the latest yet.

It may be best to ensure that your hardware has the latest BIOS. (BEWARE - improperly applied BIOS updates can 'brick' your hardware)

Re: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

I have tested the latest Mass Storage pack (11.09) and it did not recognize my USB3.  Or were you referring to Chipset driverpack?

I have not updated my BIOS but i am curious why you think it is the BIOS.  I am able to see the external HD when i tell the notebook to boot from Alternate Boot Devices.  I will check into the BIOS to see if there is an update.

Re: USB 3.0 with MassStorage/Chipset 10.11

DO NOT sliptream drivers to your source that you use for BartPE... this will corrupt your source (for use with BartPE anyway). Only add drivers to PE with PEBuilder (as plugins (like the DriverPacks plugin) or in the driver folder (manually))

YOU CAN'T add Chipset to BartPE... It is not supported at this time. the HWPnP plugin (which enables advanced drivers for PE) does not support Sound or Chipset, and is why those DriverPacks are disabled for PE.

DO add the driver manually.

how>?

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/help/english/drivers.htm

I would put it in the Your-Path-To-Your-PE-Files\drivers\SCSIAdapter\Your-drivers-folder-name-here\USB 3 Driver Files here
IE
C:\Bartpe\drivers\SCSIAdapter\USB3\driver.inf
C:\Bartpe\drivers\SCSIAdapter\USB3\driver.sys
etc...

build and test...
