Topic: New step-by-step video posted on how to use DriverPacks

Ok, I've re-shot the whole thing and its only 5 parts now instead of 6!

I just created a click-by-click video tutorial that shows users of ANY experience level (yes, even my mom can do it) how to slipstream SP1, SP2 and SP3 along with updated Mass Storage drivers, LAN drivers, WLAN drivers, CPU drivers and Chipset drivers and then create a new, bootable (and now updated) Windows XP installation CD using DriverPacks and Nlite.

These videos are viewable in YouTube's standard 360p and 480p resolution and they are also all viewable in 720p HD resolution for the best viewing experience.

Excellent! Thanks Carey! smile

For what it's worth: it's video #4 that contains the detailed explanation on how to use DriverPacks BASE.

Re: New step-by-step video posted on how to use DriverPacks

I am curious why you tell people to NOT select the text mode mass storage drivers?

If you do not select text mode mass storage then the created Disc will not be able to find any SATA or other non MS supported HDDs and I thought that was one of the things you wanted people to be able to do...
I believe this is an error / mistake in your tutorial?

Jeff

Jeff... CONGRATS on the interview... I would think this is very cool for you all!!!

Re: New step-by-step video posted on how to use DriverPacks

With regards to 'text mode' I have a suggestion. If text mode is ONLY required for use with the MassStorage drivers, and the mass storage drivers won't work if text mode is not selected, why not automate this. In other words, when the user is selecting which driver packs they want to integrate, on the option for Mass Storage Drivers perhaps it should be listed as a choice like this "Mass Storage Drivers (text mode enabled)"

And take away the text mode option from the user. Have the software automatically enable it any time Mass Storage drivers are selected for integration. Seems like a simple tweak that would make it more 'idiot-proof'.

Thanks!
Carey

Re: New step-by-step video posted on how to use DriverPacks

There are many situations where it is desirable to not select textmode Mass Storage drivers.

A user may have integrated their text mode drivers using some other method like nLite for one quick example.

Another example might be if the user had no need for them (all their machines use IDE HDDs)

It's also possible that a user has made custom changes to txtsetup.sif and or dosnet.inf that might get corrupted.

Not selecting textmode has a side benefit of cutting the run time of DriverPacks BASE by about 70%. (cuts a 7 min run time down to about 1 minute) Note: If QSC is enabled then every run after the first one will be about 20% faster when textmode is enabled. 7 min first run, 5 min every run afterward. Why?  The process of extracting and making .cab files from the original mass storage drivers won't have to be done again, they are now "cached". More... Mass storage drivers must be compressed using Microsoft's compression method (driver.sys compresses to driver.sy_) to make them work properly.

This option is also particularly useful for me personally. testing takes much less time when i can run the program in one minute instead of 5, this really speeds up my ability to develop and test new DriverPacks BASE features or bug fixes.

Although DriverPacks BASE is absolutely easy enough for a novice to use, it was and still is designed and intended for advanced level users. Removing (advanced) functionality that many of our users depend on would not be a move in a positive direction.

I am certainly open to suggestions on making this more user friendly!
However I cannot remove important features many people depend on wink.

Your suggestion to add a description of what it is for is definitely an an outstanding idea!
I also had grown your idea a little... My thought was to automatically select the Textmode check box when the mass storage pack check box is selected. In this way it would lead a reasonable person to believe the two things should go together. Do you have more input on how I might make it more friendly? Perhaps help me with the specific wording of the check boxes description? I was thinking something like "This option will eliminate the need for F6 floppy drivers" or "Select to Prevent 'No Hard Drive found' errors"

Thanks Carey, your feedback helps make DriverPacks better for everyone!

Re: New step-by-step video posted on how to use DriverPacks

My thoughts were if you set it to check the box automatically, then the novice has no thinking to do or documentation to read. An advanced user would know to uncheck the box for these other custom scenarios you mention. I agree with you, give the users choice, but the novice doesn't know what choice to make where the advanced user will.

Thanks!
Carey

input on wording of the feature / checkbox description?

Re: New step-by-step video posted on how to use DriverPacks

These videos are not on youtube now! Has Carey removed them, or has somebody complained to youtube about Copyright infringement - possibly a commercial competitor?

Re: New step-by-step video posted on how to use DriverPacks

wow... good question.

Re: New step-by-step video posted on how to use DriverPacks

He pulled them because the auto update feature is no longer supported...

He was getting to many emails about why the auto updater no longer worked.

Of course the answer is "greed killed the auto updater".

Re: New step-by-step video posted on how to use DriverPacks

Well if we ignore the auto-update feature, would they still not be of value as a teaching tool, if Carey edited the start of the tutorial to say this? smile
