Topic: How to Fix Fake Setup.exe calls himself Original Setup.exe ??

I've got this problem when i reformated my computer which is in WIN XP SP 2 cause it got infected with a virus called Classified.exe

I created a 4 DVD back up for my files, musics, pictures i packed them into .rar for long time usage in the back up's i included the win-rar installer

Now i used the OS that my cousin gave to me which is WIN XP SP 3 - format complete

now i installed the winrar which is from my former desktop

and the Classified.exe is back (of course i wouldn't install it if i know it is infected)

Now i planned to reformat it once MORE

I put the WIN XP SP 3 Cd in the rom and Run the Setup while on windows

then restarted the PC for continuing the installation

i didn't get the chance to completely format the pc which happened the cd directly windows restarted the previous setup (the first attempt)

i go with the flow then suddenly this problem occured

the OEM.exe something and then i clicked ok

this error occured

"fake setup.exe calls himslef original setup.exe - set up abort"

clicked ok

now the pc will restart then the old setup will restart and then the OEM.exe then the fake setup.exe again

so i can't really get into windows to type in the cmd the plausible solutions i have that i got from this topics

As stated in that thread you pointed to...

cd %systemroot%\system32
DEL /F setupold.exe

hitting <Shift> <F10> should bring up a CMD window wink

<Shift><F10> won't work sir
I've tried it before the setup is restarted
during setup being restarted
after setup being restarted

i've even tried it to open it on the BIOS xD

where else i can try to open the cmd prompt?

shift-F10 works perfectly fine for me.  Any time after T-39 during setup gets the command prompt.

Hmm if he needs to be at T-39 for Shift F10 to work - then that was not a valid suggestion... since setup never gets called... (he won't / can't get that far)

You're going to have to format and start over... (NBD that was what you were doing anyway)
or use a BartPE disc to edit the HDD
or do a parallel install
or hang the HDD off another machine
or use the recovery console
or use a NT6 PE disc
or some other method that allows you to delete that file from the HDD.

Since you stated that you intend to load it clean anyway, I would just start from the CD again and format...
Simple and easy!

Re: How to Fix Fake Setup.exe calls himself Original Setup.exe ??

I've just read the contents of the link that you gave me,i realized that i can't really go into T-39 Stage

Now,I'm Wondering if i cood use bios to set CD-ROM as 1st boot device, but how would i do that?

One more thing i google the list of keyboard shortcut for the accurate shortcuts and i found out that there is no CMD shortcut that i can use (or maybe it's because i'm not in windows after all) or i am not looking good or i did not see it.

<Shift>+<F10> is for Context Menu

Re: How to Fix Fake Setup.exe calls himself Original Setup.exe ??

I told you that i was mistaken in my last post... Setup.exe needs to be running for shift f10 to work and you don't get that far wink.

you looked up windows shortcuts... you are not in windows yet... the stage of setup after the first reboot and before the second reboot is called the PE stage of setup or WinPE, Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE). So since you are not in windows a whole different set of rules and shortcuts exists. (It is because you are not in windows after all)

How to set the CD to boot first is different for each machine/BIOS you will have to investigate either the manufacturer (Dell, HP, IBM) or the MotherBoard manufacturers site (GigaByte, Intel, MSI, DFI, Asus...) and read the documentation. Typically there is an advanced section where you can select "Boot Order". Can't be more specific than that without knowing which motherboard / BIOS you have.
