Topic: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Hi! I managed to create a slipstreamed Windows XP installation disc using Nlite and all 10 of the latest driver packs using this guide here http://tinyurl.com/lzz2qh. I managed to get a disc image working on Sun Virtualbox. I then burnt the image to disc and tried to install it on the target computer only to get the following error messages:

dac960nt.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue.

So I rebooted the machine and tried again, only to get a similar error message:

viaide.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue.

and again...

dmio.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue.

Any suggestions?

David

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

What guide? tinyurl is blocked at my house...

Nm.. I used a vm to scope it out...

sure sounds like your source is corrupted based on having almost zero details about the issue.
Burn a new CD/DVD at a slower speed and see if that fixes it. Is the ODD known good?

I burnt the image in Nero 8 Essentials, with 'verify' on?

"Is the ODD known good?" Not sure what you mean by 'ODD'.

Thanks

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

ODD is a an acronym for Optical Disc Drive. I meant a CD Rom or CD burner or DVD reader or DVD writer. But requires much less typing

the question is - is the disc reader a tested known good unit and Just because it may be new does not mean it is a good unit.

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Thanks for the explaination of the acronym. I looked at the status of my ODD via the device manager (the only way I know how to test it) and it reports that the device is working properly. I'll try to give you a little more info. I didn't select 'Text mode' as suggested in the official tutorial here:

"If you previously had to use the F6/floppy method to get access to your hard disk during Windows setup, make sure you select the Mass-Storage driverpack as well as check the "Text-Mode" option. Text-Mode integration will ensure that your RAID, IDE or SATA controller is correctly identified and supported by the Windows installer prior to installation. In other words, TEXTMODE is required if the Windows installer CD does not recognize your destination hard drive.

Select Text-Mode and you are saying "Bye Bye, Floppy".

for the following reasons:

1) I've never installed Windows XP on my machine because it came ready installed and I've never had to reinstall it, therefore I've never used the F6/floppy method and wouldn't know if I had to or not?
2) I do have a floppy disc drive installed on my machine, which I do not want to say 'Bye Bye' to. However, my computer did not come with any floppy discs that were needed for the installation to complete.

Looking at the sentence which mentions, "...your RAID, IDE, SATA controller is correctly identified...." I think I may have misunderstood here, so maybe I did need to tick this box, I'm still not sure?

At this point it may be worth me mentioning that I created the original image on my old PC. I then transfered this image to my new PC which has a DVD writer and tested it as virtual installation on 'Sun VirtualBox' which seemed to work fine.

I did as was suggested to me in the earlier post and burnt the image again using a slower speed and the disc was verified as ok. I then attempted to boot with it in the old PC's DVD drive. I pressed F11 during the setup to ensure my machine booted from the DVD drive. Eventually the Windows Setup screen was presented and the drived wizzed away for what seemed to be a long time and then displayed the following message:

Please insert disk labelled
Windows XP Home Edition SP3 CD into Drive A
Press enter when ready

Drive A is my floppy drive, so I ignored it and pressed enter anyway. The same thing happened again, so I exited and rebooted. I pressed F11 again during the boot sequence and changed the boot device to the hard drive. Whilst the machine was booting I pressed any key when given the option to boot from CD. Again the machine took ages and finally I was presented with the following message:

INF file txtsetup.sif corrupt or missing, status 8192
Setup cannot continue
Press any key to exit

So, I tried a third time using the last method described and got the following message:

File/i386.biosinfo.inf could not be loaded. The error code is 2
Setup cannot continue
Press any key to exit

And that brings me to where I am now. I don't have clue what's going on? Please help?

David

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

did you start with a hologramed OEM XP CD to start with?

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

To install the slipstreamed disc, I started with the slipstreamed disc. If you mean did I compile the slipstreamed disc using the hologramed OEM XP CD, the answer is yes.

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

the first portion of the install is textmode. did textmode setup finish? (were you able to select the HDD)
after the first reboot is WinPE stage of setup... is this where it fails?
after the second reboot is GUI stage of setup... is this where it fails?

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

I wasn't continually at my computer while the installation took place (I think I was doing the vacuuming or something useful like that). As far as I know there was a blank screen for long time, followed by a blue screen with the title Windows Setup at the top of the screen. Again this was present for ages. The first message on the screen was:

Please insert disk labelled
Windows XP Home Edition SP3 CD into Drive A
Press enter when ready

I gave more detail on this above in an earlier post. I don't think I got as far as being instructed to reboot the machine?

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

the machine reboots automaticaly during an install twice... this divides the install into three very distinct sections.

Textmode...  reboot
Textmode is a plain blue screen
WinPE...        reboot
PE has the progress display (IE 36 min remaining)
GUI...  (you login for first time)

I really do need to know which section failed...

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Hi! I've just booted the machine with the slipstreamed DVD in the CD/DVD drive. What follows is a blow by blow account of what happened. Whilst the machine was booting it gave me the option to boot from CD, which I did. A black screen was presented with the message:

Setup is loading configuration files

This was replaced by a blue screen with 'Windows Setup' title at the top. Along the bottom of the screen various messages flashed up until eventually the message, 'Setup is loading kernel files DLL'. This displayed for a while until finally the following message was displayed:

File\i386\KDOM.DLL could not be loaded
The error code is 7
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit

The installation did not get as far as rebooting like you suggested?

Thanks for your help.  smile

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

That clears things up a little...

Your install is failing at the TextMode setup phase...

i found these clues useing google "could not be loaded The error code is 7"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812580
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330181
http://club.cdfreaks.com/f138/hard-disk … ws-192463/

I belive all the articals have one thing in common they refer to bad hardware or Incompatable BIOS settings.
HDD testing and Memory testing were both recomended in those posts / articals as well as a bad (dirty) ODD...

I belive you have issues at the hardware level...
if you have any add in cards (modem sound etc) remove them temporarily.

I personaly belive in cheapest easiest first
reset BIOS defaults
replace HDD and ODD cables...   try hanging a known good ODD on the machine
use seatools or WDdiag or whatever to verify your HDD is good.
IE good ol basic troubleshooting wink

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

I was wondering if when I set up the Driverpacks on the slipstreamed CD, whether I needed to allow the 'Textmode' option, as I didn't in the original setup?

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

I don't know which mass storage controller is in your machine (since you have not posted your HWIDs)
I get the impression this machine is older... if it uses a standard IDE then no you don't need it.
if it finds your HDD then you don't need it...

It is not failing because of the way you installed DriverPacks...
(IE Not installing DriverPack MassStorage is not the reason why you are having this problem)

PS I always add DriverPack MassStorage textmode... BUT Again, doing so will not solve your problem....

You have an issue with your Hardware not your software...

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Hi! I've looked throught the links you provided. The website that the third link goes to provides other links to several hardware testing tools. I'm having a problem getting the second of them, which is entitled, 'Western Digital diag for CD'. I cannot find this application on the website. I googled DVD diag tools and amongst others, Nero CD-DVD Speed x.xx.x was suggested which I happen to have a copy of, is this adequate? I'm aware that it's been superceded now, but I have found a userguide to the old version?

You're right about my machine, it is an older machine and it does use IDE. Would it be helpful if I provide an HWID (hardware ID)? I have a report compiled by Belarc Advisor, is this the same thing?

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

there is a HWIDs Tool in my signature... It will dump your Hwids into notepad so you can then paste them here...
Your issue does not seem to be driver related though... the HWIDs are only useful for troubleshooting Driver issues wink

The manufacturer of your drive will determin which test tool you need...
If you have a SeaGate drive the you will use Seatools to diagnose.
If you have a Western Digital drive then you will use DLGTools to diagnose
etc...

first you must open your case and determine the HDD manufacturer...

Did you try swapping memory chips as recomended in the one KBArtical

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

I thought I'd try to takle the software tests first (easiest). Even though my HDD is a Samsung (as determined by Belarc advisor), I used Seatools to have a look at it as it says it's suitable for other brands of HDD. It appears to be healthy as it passed both a short and long tests. I would still like to test my DVD drive though, but as I said in my previous post I cannot find the tool suggested in one of the links. Can you suggest any alternatives?

"if you have any add in cards (modem sound etc) remove them temporarily."

I haven't touched the hardware yet. I know I have a modem card added, but the sound card is 'onboard'. I'm not really sure what I can remove or not? I think the best thing for me to do is post the HW part of the Belarc report I mentioned earlier and perhaps you could suggest which?

Out of curiosity I tried to boot the machine with the original hologramed OEM XP CD. This seemed to work ok as it progressed a lot further than the slipstreamed DVD. I exited the setup before it went too far. I don't know if this is significant?

Thanks

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

I really think your problem is hardware based... so avoiding opening the case is probably just prolonging your pain...

try this Memtest.exe

Testing the DVD is not very productive... So i am not surprised that tools for that are scarce...
Since a new burner is $20 it will cost you more to test it than to replace it.
I charge a $50 bench fee for diagnosing hardware... you could buy two DVDs and a mem stick for that wink.
I also noticed that you have two DVD drives - did you try installing from just one, or did you try to install from the the other one too?
Have you tried your install Disc on any other PC?

I am leaning towards RAM as your issue... Since you have mismatched RAM (two 1G chips one 256M)
The very first thing I would do is pull that pesky 256M chip (RAM was at the top of the list in the MS KB...)
Then i would start eliminating other devices... Pull the Modem, Pull the cables off the two CD drives, pull the videocapture card, If it has onboard video pull the 6200, etc...

PS i just noticed that one of your DVDs is SCSI...
That may require that you do include mass storage textmode drivers if you are using that drive to install...
If the SCSI ODD is connected to an addin card pull it out with the modem and tv/capture cards.

PSS the Belarc report is basically useless to me... I can only assume you wish to provide good info, if so then please try supplying the info specificaly requested.

Yeah i thought about UBCD4Win too... but thought they might be a little much...

The other thing I thought it might be; Since he is so shy about popping the lid, it is VERY likely given the age of the machine that the cooling fans are just clogged or failing and the darned thing is just overheating wink

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Cards on the table... wink Relatively speaking I'm a novice when it comes to computers, hence my reluctance to dive in and 'pop the lid'. Guess I can't be brilliant at everything wink Anyway, I've tried several more things since my last post (all without opening the case). I have in the following order Reset the BIOS to default, performed a memort test with the suggested software - which turned out to be ok (whilst I did this I monitored the CPU temp - 109F, chassis temp - 89F and fanspeed - 4623rpm using some software that came with the motherboard) and attempted to clean the lense of the DVD player (DVD with brushes). I say attempted because the DVD would not play properley, freezing and stuttering between frames. I then recalled that when I first aquired the machine I had problems playing back some DVD movies. To confirm this I loaded up several DVD movies, with some playing and some not. However, I don't recall ever having any problem with data DVD's.

I then tried to reboot the machine with the slipstreamed DVD. Now the machine was refusing to boot from DVD/CD completely. I wasn't even given the option. This is despite changing the boot device in the BIOS settings. Following this I tried to boot from the slipstreamed DVD on another machine, a laptop with XP Pro installed. I got to the setup screen and was reassured to see text flashing by at the bottom of the screen, until it got to the '...Universal Host Controller...' I was then presented with the following error message:

File usbhub.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 5964 in d:xpsp\base\bootsetup\setup.c.
Press any key to continue

and then

Setup failed. Press any key to continue

I don't understand why my computer appears to have two DVD players. I definitely only have one along with a CD writer? I've included the report from the HWID tool for your information:

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Oh yes! After all that I just remembered can just go ahead and just disconnect devices without first uninstalling their drivers?

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Did you burn your DVD using the burner that is known to be problematic?

Well we all knew nothing at one time you are polite and respectful and thoughtful... that buys you some lattitude with regard to our posted 'no noobs' policy. Its the noobs who want to pretend they know it all that will ususally buy themselves a helping of 'the treatment' wink.

So I understand your reluctance with no experience and no mentor to watch over your shoulder...
Let's put it like this...
Suppose you took a brand new DVD burner and laid it in the driveway and smashed it Flat with your car...
That would cost you Twenty dollars... Oh well... that is less than dinner for one at a nice restaraunt... wink
I Don't want to seem mean but i am going to say it anyway... You could buy a machine just like yours for about $100...
You really don't have anything to loose as long as you have BACKED UP YOUR DATA.

Go for it Buy a New DVD burner from NewEgg.com have it delivered to your doorstep.

I always leave the PC plugged into the wall this grounds the case and prevents ESD (static)
with newer machines you must pull the 20+ pin cable from the Mother board to power it off if you don't have a power switch on the power supply.

Install the DVD (super easy, look at old ribbon cable note direction, replace cable same direction on new drive... (red wire is pin 1 ALWAYS))

vacuum out your case (a canister vac with a hose works just lovely in a pinch - not optimal, but OK) Don't burn out the poor little fan bearings by spinning them at ludicrus speed for an extended time with the vacuum. tongue

If you burned your disc on that questionable DVD then i am certian it is your problem - replace it = No Brainer.
I would replace the cable first, but I am going to bet you don't have an extra one laying around... You can "thumb" your existing cable to be sure it is secure in its sockets. Cables often will wiggle loose. Especialy if the machine is transported (IE "tower flex" smile)  The drive is the more likely candidate to fail - Since it has moving parts smile)

Both the IDE Cable and the DVD burner are Cheap and Easy and consistent with my "Cheapest Easiest First" Rule...

You are still prolonging your pain... I told you i knew you had a Hardware issue. You responded with "Yeah that drive has given me problems before." ... ... ...  I could give you a bunch of techno mumbo jumbo about why it might verify in windows and then fail in textmode but spare both of us wink

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

The slipstreamed image was created on the old machine transfered to the new machine via thumb drive and then burnt to DVD. AFAIK the DVD writer on the new machine works ok. I will replace the DVD drive in the old machine with a new one. Any idea why the computer appears to have two DVD drives? Also if the machine continues to 'act up' and I continue with the other hardware tweaks you suggested, ie, pulling devices, do I need to uninstall the drivers first???

Thanks again big_smile

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

no you will not need to remove drivers... just make sure the MB (MotherBoard) is not powered when you are playing wink

I belive you may have some kind of emulator running like Daemon tools, a virtual ODD software of some type. Several companies offer virtual ODD software...

Your "new" machine does not have a burner? (is this the laptop you refered to above?)
