Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

As would I. How can I apply for this?

Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

I think having established yourself here in some way would be important. I do not wish to give alpha products out to users who have not established thier skill set by provideing quality posts in the past. "Ohhh, pick me" doesn't count. wink

I dont't even know if the two of you even use DriverPacks BASE. and i certainly have no feel for either of your troubleshooting skills.
Alpha features are for advanced users. you have not even established that you are users, let alone advanced users wink

thank you for your interest and you can look forward to expanded testing as we have a more solid product to distribute.

Thanks again for your interest

Jeff

Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

Hey everyone.

Sorry I've been MIA.  I switched jobs in May and no longer need to build images for anything other than personal use.

Just wanted to make a quick comment on OverFlow's anti-Sysprep sentiments.

Yes, sysprep does suck, but in a corporate XP environment it is the way to go.  *looks enviously at OS X & Linux sys builders*  I actually started trying to create universal install CDs when I first began building images.  The ryanvm update packs ended up causing more problems then they solved (couldn't install .NET frameworks from Windows Update).  Trying to script out AutoIt and WPI to make all the necessary tweaks is time consuming to implement, debug, and execute when you have a large number of apps.  Installing from optical media is waaaay slower then imaging over ethernet, which becomes a huge issues when you have 50 - 100 computers to image and roll out.  I ended up coming to the same conclusion that essaion did.  It works out better/faster in the end to go with sysprep.  Probably the most annoying part of setting up sysprep is adding drivers to support all your hardware.  That's where DriverPacks come in.  smile

One more thing.  Since I haven't updated this How To in a while it might be out of date.  Anyone have any suggestions for changes to the instructions?

I guess you didn't fully read my last few and just assumed the content? wink big_smile (My thoughts on SysPrep are well known tongue
I understand...

Please take a look at the sysprep alpha in the testing team forum that is available to you

I have a suggestion - how about upgradeing the tutorial to include the use of BASE... tongue
I can only assume you have not been keeping up - since you just got back wink

Welcome back, please take a moment to get caught up. I am really really really looking forward to your input.

Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

After a long absence (been working on other projects) I've been dragged back to sysprep imaging here at work, so if the request for testers is still open I'd like to volunteer!  Give me something to do while I clean up the mess my "colleagues" have left the current images in *sigh*

Cheers

Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

Woo Hoo! Welcome back unseen!

Please help yourself to the Alpha. I can't wait to get some more feedback.
I am kind of stalled ATM, not being a sysprep guy myself wink I need your kind of feedback to know where to go with the code next.

Thanks so much for your time now and in the past, I can't wait for your input and the experience you have to offer the team!

Jeff

please note the testing team forum is now visible to you!
Have a great day and thanks again for your offer to once again make DriverPacks better for everyone.

Welcome to the Testing team!

(ps I thought skinlayers was going to have some fuel for me too...? RU out there sir?)

Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

the (sysprep) devicepath key looks rather problematic - [using latest drivers (nightlies) and 3rd party ones] - most of problems look to be in 3rd party but alot of others scattered about

Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

...I should have said after a good year or so of not fiddling much with this I have just got back into it - this sysprep base feature is rather good, seems to be doing what i was doing by scripts ages ago....i requested the universal imaging section in the forum from Bashrat but never got as far as writing all my solution up! doh - am just giving it a first test run now.
One bug it seems to have is with the mass storage driver integration while sysprep runs, a problem I ran into where unsigned drivers stop sysprep each time (like a bazilion popups for adaptec cards). I wrote a supression AutoIT program that got past all that, although i nthe end I also only added certain mass storage ones, a feature that may well be useful on this. Gotta dash now but will post more later.

Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

Thanks for reporting

there are some much more recent posts about this... i belive they are in the testing team area wink...

Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

I have been working with sysprep for about 5 years, I have it working almost universal.. I only seem to have a problem with the UP Hal on  MPC1200 laptops. Anyway, I started using your driver packs last year, and I am updating my images for the new school year. wondering if my input would be helpful.
I see that you dont invite just anyone in the universal imaging section, But I would like to give and get some help in this area.
always trying to improve the process.

Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

Another SysPrepper, AWESOME!!  big_smile

As for the HAL switch, I have found Galapo's OfflineSysPrep to work quite well but some times it chokes on HAL detection, mostly on older hardware.  He may be making another alteration to allow for prompting on first boot to switch the HAL, of course that will be a less unattended solution but it may help.  A great alternative is MySysPrep which I have had better success with HAL swicthing, but MySysPrep uses the Microsoft way for mass storage drivers, IE sysprep.inf, whereas OfflineSysPrep handles this MUCH better.  So my method is to reseal the machine with MySysPrep, followed by OfflineSysPrep for mass storage injection and a few other nice tweaks.

From there it is just a matter of how Base can help you integrate any other drivers in to the system.  So I guess it would be best to say the steps are:
1) Get the master system finished
2) Base driver integration MINUS text-mode mass storage
3) MySysPrep for Resealing to get the HAL switch
4) OfflineSysPrep for mass storage and other items

MySysPrep can be downloaded at http://www.tsaysoft.com/mysysprep/ and OfflineSysPrep is available at http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php? … opic=19397

Oh don't forget to clear the MountedDevices list under HKLM\System\MountedDevices - These will be rebuilt on the next boot!

NOTE: This HOW TO assumes you are proficient with sysprep.  If not, I recommend you read through this first.

1) Download the latest version of DriverPack BASE (7.05.2 at time of writing) and whatever DriverPacks you need.

SNIP...

skinlayers

This method not running windows 2000.Syprep -bmsd run only Xp.

DriverPacks SAD feature can be used to update drivers post install...

If your sysprep image was installed with a windows 2k source slipstreamed with DriverPack MassStorage.
Then you should be able to set your HDD controller to standard IDE (or simply remove it) before you shut down to create your image.
when the PC first boots the HDD controler type should be detected automaticaly.

useing Skinlayers guide skip the mass storage, MakePNF and KTD parts...

Creating the \D\folders and running devpath works fine...

Why don't you try it and see how far you get and then ask us some specific questions as you encounter Issues...

Thanks

Re: [HOWTO] Using DriverPacks w/ Sysprep (Updated for BASE 7.04)

When you installed windows 2000 did you use a win 2000 source that had DriverPacks slipstreamed?
this provides the mass storage support

DON'T run makePNF... if you are useing skinlayers method...

It is probably easier to run SAD from runonce or guirunonce than to use the skinlayers method. wink
