Topic: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

Can't find this driver. I've d/led over 20 file from hp and I still can't get audio.

I have a Compaq C715NR, used the drivers it came with (which are vista drivers) so they are loaded but no sound coming out and under audio devices nothing shows up.

I think this is a newer chip called hermosa

HWID

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5051&SUBSYS_103C30D9

Only drivers that have the HWID is 4.31.2.0 found at HP under this model and also on this computer.
I've installed UAA 1.00revb from hp
KB888111
and then these drivers.

If anybody can help me that would be awesome.

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

Hi bj2tall,
Welcome to DriverPacks.net

I am sad to report that you probably will not find what you are looking for here.

We use our software to slipstream (integrate) drivers with Win 2000, XP and 2003 server installation disks.
Vista is not supported and we have few (if any) vista drivers in the packs and therefore no user base for vista either.

also we don't find drivers for hardware our users provide missing drivers to us and request we add them.

I have seen people post for drivers here, and get lucky with a reply, but not usually.

Thanks for Posting here at DriverPacks and we are always glad to help when we can.

Oops *edit*

just noticed the title of your post - must be getting tired

it was h*ll trying to find this for a toshiba satellite P300-1A8, also known as PSPC0E. mostly because of the stupid website design.

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

Perhaps I can help with this one. Just a few days ago I dug up XP drivers for a Compaq Presario CQ50-209WM laptop and got everything working, including audio and microphone.

This laptop has the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 (HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5051). I don't remember where I found the driver (I think it was Driverguide.com), but it's version 3.47.00 and does not include the .cat file, even though it's supposed to be there. I installed this and sound worked fine, but not the microphone. The only files in this driver are the following:
CHDAud.sys
UCI32A21.dll
UIU32a.exe
WiSVHe5.inf

After extensive searching and trial and error, I finally stumbled upon the solution. Turns out the Intel HD Audio HDMI driver that's included as part of Intel's GMA drivers is the solution. I used the Intel GMA 4500M Graphics v14.37.0.5009 driver, as it's the latest for this hardware.

The HDMI driver version included is 5.10.00.1047

I installed it after the Conexant driver and suddenly the yellow mark in device manager was gone and the microphone works.

Now this laptop has full audio function.

I don't yet know for sure if both drivers must be installed or just the Intel HDMI driver. The laptop in question doesn't belong to me and I don't have physical access to it, only remote access. I'll be sure to report back on that when I find out, although I'm positive both need to be installed.

No other "solution" I tried works, including Toshiba drivers.

Also, there is an XP version of sp39902.exe (version 4.58.0.0 A) buried on HP's site for this hardware that will not install properly. It's not needed and in fact all it does is provide an audio control panel.

And just an FYI: If you have service pack 3 integrated into your XP install cd, then you don't need to install any Microsoft UAA driver as it's part of SP3.

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

I'm willing to be this was rather due to the MS hotfix KB888111 than the installation of the HDMI driver (of which the setup routine may have taken over the job of installing the hotfix).

Thankfully, it was included in SP3, as you've correctly pointed out.

Missing CAT files should not break driver function, juts WHQL signing (which isn't too much of a loss, actually).

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

This HWID is still missing from both sound DriverPacks.
If anyone can;
1. find a driver
2. CONFIRM IT WORKS
3. provide a link to download
...then I'll add it to the DriverPack Sound B I'm working on currently.

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

Just my opinion, but as there is no single working XP driver for the Conexant 221 it probably shouldn't be added anyway.

I've spent a solid week searching so I know it's not out there for public download. I can tell you with 100% certainty that not even Conexant provides a 32 bit XP driver for the 221. Their generic driver page only has modem drivers. Also, Windows/Microsoft Update recognizes the hardware, but fails to install the proper driver.

From this experience, I can only assume that HP has done something rather unorthodox in their implementation of the Conexant audio/modem chipset.

Since the Intel HDMI driver works, I assume HP has somehow tied the Conexant chipset into the Intel GL40 Northbridge.

I can't figure out why the Vista driver that HP provides doesn't work for XP, as there's nothing that's obviously Vista-specific in any of the Vista files. In fact, it apparently originally supported 32 & 64 bit XP & Vista. Check this out, it's from IPathVXS.INI in SP39902.exe, the official Vista driver for the Compaq I worked on:

[Version]
Signature         = "$CHICAGO$"
DEVTYPE_UIU_INI_FILE = 1

[INSTALL_PATH]
WINXP      = "XP32\Setup.exe"
WINXP64    = "XP64\Setup64.exe"
WINVISTA   = "V32\Setup.exe"
WINVISTA64 = "V64\Setup64.exe"

The XP folders have been removed from the package. This tells me that HP does indeed have the XP drivers, they just won't release them.

I'll have to wait until the owner of the laptop does a clean install before I find out anything new. As I'm the one who makes his unattended XP disc, I also get his error reports. Unfortunately it could be months before he does a clean install or it could be next week, who knows.

I've sent him a message, so maybe he will let me play around some. If I learn anything new on this issue, I'll report back here. Maybe someone around here has a few tricks up their sleeves or knows someone at HP and can get a link to the XP drivers since we know they exist.

Just so I know, exactly what info is needed as confirmation that a particular driver works?

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

I've learned a lot in the past few months while reading the MSDN material here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms794526.aspx
It really bugs (pun intended) me that driver makers get so lazy with their .inf files.  Your post above just highlights that laziness.
Using the "$CHICAGO$" flag makes this .inf supported by all windows OS (when it shouldn't).

Microsoft wrote:

Note  An INF file that has a $Windows 95$ signature will not run on Windows 2000 and later versions of the operating system. Conversely, an INF file that has a $Windows NT$ signature will not run on Windows 95/98/Me.

If the INF file will be used on both Windows 95/98/Me and Windows 2000 and later versions, the INF file must also have the following line in the Version section:

Compatible=1

A network INF file that has a $Chicago$ signature will not run on Windows 2000 and later versions unless the Compatible entry in the Version section is set to 1.

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

@mr_smartepants

Thanks for that info, just what I've been pondering lately regarding inf

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

Thanks for the MSDN link. I always thought the $CHICAGO$ flag referred only to XP and $Windows NT$ to XP and above. This might come in handy in the future.

**I got some time on my friend's laptop again via vnc and grabbed the info I needed. The following is taken from a .txt dump from Unknown Devices:

Sound, video and game controllers
		Audio Codecs
		Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221
			 Conexant Systems
		Intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI Service
			 Intel Corporation

So this confirms that both the Conexant 221 and Intel HDMI drivers need to be installed to provide full functionality. You still won't get the audio control panel that you would see in Vista, but at least the hardware works.

Also, I used Driver Magician Lite to make sure both drivers were installed, and they are. Here's the contents of drvbck.pdb from each driver extraction:

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

Hi everybody!

At first, please, i'm sorry for my poor english, but i want to help, like all of you helping me. And is my first post.

I've been downgrade a laptop Compaq Presario C778LA from Vista to XP, and one big trouble was the driver for the sound card, Conexant 221@Intel 82801 ICH8.

I found it in a forum from my country, Argentina, from a user who could make a succefull instalation in a Compaq Presario C770LA.

And i tried it, and works very fine.

If any of you wants to try it, here is the URL for download:

http://rapidshare.com/files/188026618/04_Conexant_HD-Audio_SmartAudio_221.7z

I hope it works for any of you. And again, sorry my poor english.

Have you been using the DriverPacks already and to no success?
Please verify this device does indeed not get installed with the latest DriverPacks.

Also, please post the HWIDs of the device.

Third, we usually are not very keen on including drivers from "dubious" sources (that includes OCHs).
Is there any official link for the driver (either manufacturer or OEM)?

I already post méthod to instal this driver here smile

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

it will work if we add some HWID manually to driver because I don't think windows will detecte it alone ??

Re: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 drivers for xp

abdou, you will sometimes have better success by adding a edited (and properly pruned) OEM INF to its reference source, because that is generic and reference to many OEM.

when you try this, it is not done lightheartedly.
you will have to compare files (winmerge or araxis) and pay particular attention to registry entries for the "missing" HWID, as well as pay attention to differences in entries for ALL the Operating systems for that HWID.
(a windows 2000 driver line in INF could have reference to a different filename.)

An INF will have checks to version.
DO NOT BE FOOLED by the version and date you see at the TOP in INF.
A GOOD MANY INF have additional version data (last edit date/sub-sub-version), at BOTTOM of the INF.

The answer was 42?
