Topic: [suggestion] Driver locator !!!

I just discovered (thanks to this MSFN 3ad)  Unknown Devices:

Unknown Devices helps you find what those unknown devices in Device Manager really are.

By checking Device Manager for unknown devices and extracting information from it, this program attempts to figure out what the device is. You might not have to open your case or look up random numbers off of PCI cards to figure out what they are.

Program supports Win95, 98, 98se, Me, 2k, XP and 2003 but not NT. It also attempts to support future OSes.
It runs fine from a CD or floppy. It's free for personal and (especially) business use.

Official website

It would be great to have an open source alternative for it, that could help the improvement of my "driver update manager" idea.

I also discovered DriverControl (a .NET application that searches and updates the newest drivers for your system) and DriverForge (a program that  automatically install all drivers from a specified location).

Dunno if this helps, but i hope that at least inspires ! wink

Re: [suggestion] Driver locator !!!

we have an upgrade for that...

one is a script
http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic. … 806#p17806

and one is a nice GUI
http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic. … 805#p17805

It doesn't bother telling you what it is it just installs the driver...
Of course you could look in device manger... if it still mattered. wink

Well, the installer is cool, but just installs. And is it open sourced ?

BTW, I mean an application that allows users to keep their drivers updated and to collect their compatibility feedbacks to built a sort-of "DriverGuide's  Driver Summary for each driver. yikes

Re: [suggestion] Driver locator !!!

as you point out driverguide already provides that service.

and yes if you look into the artical i pointed to it uses a redistributable MS tool (DPINST.exe) and a default config file.

so there is no source it's just useing an existing tool and combineing it with with a good driver store

if you are asking about warmsnow's GUI you will have to ask him... although, it is just a wrapper for MS's dpinst
