Topic: Vista with SP1 RTM

Just downloaded Vista SP1 full version RTM and installed on the following:

Celeron 440 (2.00gz, 800fsb, 512k)
2 gigs DDR2 (dual channel)
160gig SATA2 Hitachi HD
SATA DVDRW - Sony
GigaByte G31 Motherboard

Install time very fast.
Copying of files within Vista greatly improved.
IP6 is now a major feature.

One thing that more knowledgeable people than me are saying is that SP1 has the new micro kernel that was developed for Server 2008, will have to verify this.

Found all Hardware driver during install, a plus over XP.

I still think I will stick with XP for another year or so, lets see what Windows 7 brings to the table.

Will test over the next few days and report back. May pop in a removable hard drive (great for testing guys, ask me if you want more information on those).

Re: Vista with SP1 RTM

i swear by them - although i think E-SATA might make my "drawer drive" obsolete...

... edit ...

hey this looks convenient a drawer-less drawer drive. for SATA drives.

there is a next generation drawerless option now -
life is good - all the flexability without any silly extra trays / hardware...

Got any (legal) links to that?
From what I've read, MS has postponed the release of SP1 until March, although they released the RC1 to public (which I got)...
I was contemplating about ordering just another Vista DVD through the Anytime Upgrade program (it's only €4.70, you just pay for s&h) once they moved that on to a slipstreamed version.
I just did a manual slipstream of SP1RC1 into the source yesterday, but if you are used to the easiness of XP, then it's quite cumbersome.
First, you have to install Vista, then install SP1, generalize and close the installation, create a .WIM file of that and include that into your current source replacing the old one.
All in all took well over three hours on a fast machine with recent HW (C2D, 2GB RAM, SATA RAID-0)...
Granted, you only have to do this once, but it still left a somewhat sour feeling...

Re: Vista with SP1 RTM

all of the back planes i am familiar with require trays or rails.

never seen one you could jsut stick a naked drive into - hot swappable...

_ i am a user of fast-scsi SCA drives _ my personal server has a 12 bay backplane.

Re: Vista with SP1 RTM

Got an E-Mail from MS with the link and my ID worked, I think someone screwed up.
Tried the link this morning and it was dead.

Found this on the net re: kernel upgrade.

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000 … 667,00.htm

Mail you a DVD or need a secure site with 2.4gig free.

p.s. The install was 15-18 minutes

Glad to see you back Helmi

big_smile

Just found this link on another forum:
http://anonym.to/?http://download.micro … aik_en.iso

Not sure if the redirector is needed but as you can see, it really links to MS' own server, so it'S the real deal I guess.
Also, not my/our problem if they do not secure it via cookies or such ;P
DLing now with full speed (only 30min left smile)!

EDIT:

Great, it's really just the WAIK.
I guess someone was trying to be funny then.. hmm

Re: Vista with SP1 RTM

I looked at that link, the file size is 1.16gb, the one I got from MS is 2.67gb.

Let me know if the one you got was the SP1 Update only or the full DVD.

Re: Vista with SP1 RTM

No, it appears it was only the WAIK (which I already got before but in a smaller version containing only German language support).

The lone SP1 should sport around 434 MB from what I have gathered.
So far, there only seem to be torrent sources for the ISO and thehotfixshare.net hasn't got the installer file, yet.

Oh well, it's not as if I'm in a hurry, just a bit curious since I already tested RC1.
I'm not using Vista myself anyway (but know enough folks that have serious issues with and could make good use of SP1; I just don't want to install a non-final version on their rigs...).
