Topic: driverpacks.net manual

I'd like to get some feedback regarding the manual I'm about to start putting together. What do you prefer?

-a .chm file
-a wiki (anonymously editable)
-a wiki (anonymously editable but with approval before allowing the changes)
-a custom website, in the style of the php.net manual
-something else

Please post your opinions! Brainstorming makes better products. wink

Screenshots will obviously be there, no matter what system will be used.

Re: driverpacks.net manual

i like the .chm most smile

PS: You have many new project, Bâshrat the Sneaky!
but pleeeese think about updating the packs!

Re: driverpacks.net manual

a wiki w/ required approval sounds ok.

but rather than to tie you to the approval hassle, how about create a voting poll after an edit has been made. if first 3-5 people who sees the edit approves it, it gets listed.

If that idea is too complicating to employ, then i guess custom website would be nice smile

Of course. smile But I won't start on this right away, first I must know what is considered the best option wink

And I will NOT write this 'custom website' myself, it's just that php.net has not opensourced the code behind it, so I'd have to find a project that does something similar (30 secs of searching came up with nothing).

Hadn't thought about that yet smile But those 3-5 people should have a combined numer of at least x posts on the forums then, else it'd be too easy to spam.

Keep the ideas coming smile

Re: driverpacks.net manual

PDF doc

PDF doc

Thought about that too. Currently I think this would be The Best Thing To Do:
-navigation style of php.net manual
-but it is a wiki
-that needs approval of at least x users with a combined y number of posts, yet again depending on the amount of changed characters (for z changed characters, at least x users with y posts must approve, for...)
-that has the function to export in .chm or .pdf format

I guess most of you agree that sounds great, but getting it there... tongue smile

Keep the ideas coming though!

Re: driverpacks.net manual

a website, as simple and clear as possible smile
It has already become soo easy (compared to a year or more ago) to use the Driverpacks. Perhaps a wiki isn't necessary and a good website would be sufficient.
but if you do want a wiki perhaps you could simply extend the uAwiki?

Re: driverpacks.net manual

a custom website, in the style of the php.net manual

that's what i would like to see....but i'm just a newb.....:)

Re: driverpacks.net manual

One html page with anchors on the top! KISS big_smile

Re: driverpacks.net manual

Nah, Wiki rulez. Just require people to have accounts. smile

Re: driverpacks.net manual

Wiki sounds good to me ! smile

Re: driverpacks.net manual

I'm sure this isn't a popular opinion, but I just can't stand wikis.  I mean they suck worse than all that sucks.  It is very few and far that I stumble upon one that is actually more helpful than frustrating.  I almost dropped DreamHost because they ditched their knowledgebase for a wiki.

I agree on that one. Just take a look at uawiki.org. Many people are posting QUESTIONS there instead of new information. And others DO post useful new information, but do it in their own style instead of according to the guidelines. Quite frustrating.

IF it becomes a wiki, then it will be a very strict one.

Re: driverpacks.net manual

Suggestions about which specific software to use are welcome too!

Re: driverpacks.net manual

I vote for a PDF file with a posted MD5 file hash value.

(I too think Wiki's suck).

Cheers,

I'd like that too...

Re: driverpacks.net manual

So is the uAwiki officially abandoned?  I just updated it recently for the new GUI based 6.06.1.

A8N32-SLI Deluxe, AMD Athlonâ„¢ 64 X2 3800+, Corsair TWINX2048-4000PT
eVGA GeForce 7800 GT, Dell 2405FPW 24" Monitor
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum
4 Seagate ST3400633AS 400GB HDD in RAID5, Plextor PX-716A & PX-712A ODD

It's not abandoned. I just think it's better to keep the OFFICIAL documentation/manual at driverpacks.net: that's less confusing.

Re: driverpacks.net manual

hi Wim, et al

I never used wiki, I looked at it and I think I don't want to use wiki.

I rather even have to forget how to write BBQ.
I mean, there must be lots of users not used to VBB BOARDs
to me, it looks like WIKI would force me to use a lot of code tags.

dunno wether that's true.
I just veered away.

The answer was 42?
Kind regards, Jaak.

Re: driverpacks.net manual

CHMs and / or HTML package (for offline).
