Topic: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

If I slipstream the DriverPacks using the latest Base (7051) the installation fails prior to the partitioning stage with a "ntfs.sys is corrupt, setup cannot continue" message, it works fine under 704.

I'm nLiteing a Windows 2000 install disk as described at: http://www.msfn.org/board/HOWTO_fully_d … 97047.html
Request permission to attach version 7.04 to the above post until this issue is resolved.

The working (704) config files:

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

@OverFlow: did you add some text mode MassStorage drivers? Did you take the Windows 2000 memory limit into account? This problem might be caused by that.

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

I did not add any text mode Mass Storage drivers other than those in the driver packs.

I'm not sure about the memory limit, however all settings have been identical (Virtual PC 2007 with 384MB).

When the installation failed, I reinstalled Base version 7.04 (overwrote 7.05.1) and slipstreamed with the same settings and driverpacks (all current), it then worked.

The working directory was identical (as I was in problem solving mode, I'd backed up the nLite working directory).

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

@Bâshrat the Sneaky nope but i do agree with your assessment of the issue
neither changed mass nor any disk sections of mod_slip_wnt5_x86-32_any_uni_dpm.au3

@Kurt_Aust can we see the logs from the failed build, the log from the working one is not much help?

I suspect it is an issue with the "SP5" for 2000 read his post at the link he attached.

Kurt, could you please try this: do a new slipstream using the newest BASE (7.05.1) with the previous MassStorage (7.04). Please post the results here. Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

Unfortunately I no longer have the 7.04 Mass Storage Driver Pack, so far I can confirm:

7051 Base and 705 Mass Storage: Fail
704 Base and 705 Mass Storage: Pass
7051 Base without Mass Storage: Pass

Ok, using 7051 Base and 704 Mass Storage, there is still a fatal error, but a different one.

Insufficient memory for ntfs.sys

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

Since you are useing QSC. I wanted to make sure you knew this...

The Quick Stream Cache folder is not self maintaining.

You need to manualy delete the files in this folder anytime you switch driverpacks.

\DPs_BASE\QSC\wnt5_x86-32_uni_DP_MassStorage_*.*

if you missed this step then we dont have a valid result.

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

all the more true if you do not use a higher version number after you fixed something by your sweet self.
Then it uses a NON updated QSC.

The answer was 42?
Kind regards, Jaak.

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

Yes, I am indeed aware of the need to delete the QuickStream cache manually, and did so whenever I changed driver packs.

However I do believe this should be clarified, it appears that the cache only applies to MassStorage textmode drivers, but this is not mentioned on the appropriate screen in DriverPacks Base.

It does say that you will have to delete unused caches occasionally, but does not say what actions will make this necessary.

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

QSC is primarily useful for M1
Method one is considered obsolete for the most part and is rarely used and not discussed much anymore.

since m2 uses around 300 meg and m1 uses over 500 meg (on the destination) with full selection of the driverpacks.
M1 also exceeds the 4096 character limit for a search path in winnt.sif. so all folders past this limit are ignored.
most people opt for the disk space savings and full availability of all the drivers in the driverpacks by using M2.

If QSC is used for M2 it only affects textmode mass storage drivers. Since the mass storage driverpack is so small it doesn't have a huge benefit. I recomend turning it off unless M1 is needed.
the driverpacks base will automaticaly use the highest version found in DriverPacks or QSC so deleting the files in the QSC folder are not absolutely neccessary. Unless you are trying to use an older version AFTER you have used a newer version or if you are low on disk space.

QSC keeps a copy of the cabbed driverpacks to save time.
This was helpful only if more than one disc was going to be slipstreamed.
extracting the near solid archive 7zip DriverPacks and then cab compressing them is very processor and disk intensive.
if multiple slipstreams are done useing M1 this can save 30~60 minutes on all slipstreams done after the first one.

if your not useing M1 turn it off and forget it.

We probably will be phaseing M1 and QSC out and documentation will become a non issue. in the mean time Mr_Smartepants will probaly see this and add it to the help file he's working on.

Huh? This is not true.

This is only necessary if you want to use a modified version of a DriverPack after you've slipstreamed an unmodified one. You don't have to do it every time. The QSC has a directory for each (DriverPack, DriverPack version) - pair. Hence there's no need to clear the QSC "every time".

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

Thanks for the information on the QSC.

In my case it made about 25 seconds difference, so I couldn't help but wonder "What's the point?"

I know this is probably a bit presumptuous but in that case I would suggest changing the text on the appropriate settings page in Driver Packs BASE from:

QuickStream Cache
Enable the QuickStream Cache (recommended)
Disable the QuickStream Cache

to:

QuickStream Cache
Enable  (recommended for Slipstream method 1)
Disable (recommended for Slipstream method 2)

I belive that is a good suggestion, and not presumptuous at all. I'll add it to 7.05.2 english version

Ill have to get with the translations team to get it fixed for the other languages

@Bâshrat the Sneaky I think I was more clear with my second post. which "crossed in the mail" with your post.

Actually it's not.

QSC is still useful for text mode MassStorage drivers. So it should stay the way it is.

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

Bâshrat the Sneaky:  the QSC doesn't have to be erased at all
except for old QSC stuff but otherwise... not at all

Jeff: he was substituteing 7.04 pack for the 7.05 pack he needed to otherwise it would have used the 705 again?

Bâshrat the Sneaky: it isn't neccessary to delete the QSC stuff for that
Just move the 7.05 DP out of the DriverPacks directory
so only 7.04 would be present there. The base would then detect 7.04 as the newest version

Jeff: I see

Bâshrat the Sneaky: The base uses the version detected in the DriverPacks directory as the version for the QSC scanning.

So...

Jeff: OK,  Thank You Sir!

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

Unfortunately Base 7.05.2 still throws up the same errors:

Mass Storage 7.05 but no textmode >> OK
Mass Storage 7.05 >> ntfs.sys is corrupt
Mass Storage 7.04 >> Insufficient memory for ntfs.sys

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

you will need to tag a few extra drivers for disable If OS in mass storage inf to get going again.

pick a couple of them you won't need.
the following actions will make it work again since this error happens when too much ram is consumed by loading text mode drivers.  Additionaly this error may show up on one of your systems but not another.

add this line to some unused driver sections of DriverPack_MassStorage_wnt5_x86-32.ini in the mass storage pack. adding the below line will prevent that driver from being loaded during text mode.
The driver will still be available as a plug and play driver for windows - just not for text mode.

ms_1_exc_disableIfOS= "w2k"

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

That worked chief, mind you I had to be pretty brutal, KO'd at least 10 additional drivers before the error was cleared.

I also tried BASE 7052 / Mass Storage 705 on an unadulterated copy of Win2000 sp4, just in case my sp5 version uses more memory on setup (possible as sp5 supports large {>137GB} hard drives), however the same error occurs.

Re: [SOLVED] Win2000 ntfs.sys corrupted under Base 7.05.1

So my suspicion was right smile

Kurt_Aust, could you please tell us which ones you disabled? So we can make the same changes - or changes with the same driver size. Then you won't have to bother doing this next time.
