Topic: Has anyone gotten the 3400 series ati drivers to work on laptops?

Hi everyone. I'm new to the driverpacks forum as you can see smile I have been using DriverPacks for several months now and I love using it. Just recently I've run into a Sony FW139e/w series laptop and I am difficulty trying to load the ati drivers, atheros wifi, and realtek audio. The audio does work but in the device manager it is showing up as missing audio. I went to the Sony site and found the drivers needed for Vista.

I've tried looking around for XP driver versions but have had no luck.  I'd appreciate if any help comes along as I would help others. Cheers!

Re: Has anyone gotten the 3400 series ati drivers to work on laptops?

Most of the Atheros 7-series drivers won't work under XP since they're designed for Vista (I tried).  You should have all the drivers you need using the Graphics_A and Sound_A DriverPacks.
Can you try these two DriverPacks and report back?

Re: Has anyone gotten the 3400 series ati drivers to work on laptops?

I will definitely try those drivers and let you know if they work or not. So I'm guessing I won't be able to get the wifi working for this series laptop then?

Re: Has anyone gotten the 3400 series ati drivers to work on laptops?

Well, you might get lucky if you have an installation DVD that came with the notebook.  The drivers may be on it.
Just because I'm not able to get my Atheros card working, doesn't mean you won't.

Re: Has anyone gotten the 3400 series ati drivers to work on laptops?

I tried those packs you gave me. The audio worked with flying colors. The video didn't work out too well. I get the BSOD error  0x00000050. I saved the HWIDS and posting it here just in case if you need it. BTW I found Atheros drivers that will work for the Sony FW series. It's version V7.6.0.108. Here is my HWIDS:

Re: Has anyone gotten the 3400 series ati drivers to work on laptops?

Well my own internal testing brought up an interesting problem.
I ran a test with BOTH my new ATI HD3450 and my powerful Nvidia 8800GTS installed at the same time.
Nvidia drivers and control panel installed perfect, no problems.
ATI drivers partially installed, and ATI CCC installed, but would not run.
After restart, "New hardware wizard" popped up to install "VGA display device" which would fail.

When using each card on it's own, there were zero problems, with a clean device manager.

So I can verify that on single card installations, this DP works perfect.

Re: Has anyone gotten the 3400 series ati drivers to work on laptops?

The Graphics DP that I downloaded from the link you have given me will show that I can install the ATI HD3470 but when it installs, the BSOD will pop up. I've tried doing a manual install through device manager and still come up with the same error. However, I did come across another way of installing drivers by downloading ATI Catalyst 8.6. From there I manually installed the video driver and then ATI CCC and it went through just fine. The only thing is that when I look at the Device Manager for Display Drivers, it shows up as ATI HD 3400 Series.

So maybe I'm doing something wrong with the DP you wanted me to try out? I didn't slipstream the drivers onto an O.S. disc. Just extracted and put it onto cd for windows to search for drivers.

Re: Has anyone gotten the 3400 series ati drivers to work on laptops?

Just to clarify my above post.  I ran three tests:
Test 1. Success. Nvidia 8800GTS installed as sole graphics card.
Test 2. Success. ATI HD3450 installed as sole graphics card.
Test 3. Partial failure. both above cards installed simultaneously, with 8800GTS in #1 slot (with monitor connected), HD3450 in #2 slot (with no monitor connected.)
Nvidia installed perfect, ATI did not (CCC good, drivers bad).

I think the system got confused with two different vendors graphics cards.  Not having the monitor connected to the ATI card probably didn't help.  I should have run a Test #4 to connect the monitor to the ATI card and leave the Nvidia card without a monitor.

Just to make things even more clear:

I assume the following configuration:
NV card in PCIe (PEG)  slot, ATI card in regular PCIe slot (non-PEG).
Or does your board feature more than one PEG slot?
If so, what happens if you swap cards around?
Does the BIOS have an option about which display to init first (as it was in the PCI/AGP days where you could chose between the two)?
What does swapping around here change?

It's pretty bad that one card does not get installed.
Not that mayn folks do use multi-GFX systems but if you want to connect more than two monitors, you can either get a Triple Head from Matrox or use a second card.

My board has the Intel X38 chipset which does NOT support SLI, but DOES support CrossFire.  It has two PCIexpress x16 slots and supports dual graphics cards.
During my 'dual' test, the nvidia card was in the slot closest to the CPU.  I did not test both cards the other way around (but I should).  The system detected both cards, but could not install the ATI drivers correctly when the card was 'secondary' to the nvidia.  Also, the ATICCC installed correctly, and detected the presence of both cards, but claimed it was not compatible with either (not with nvidia for obvious reasons, and not with the ATI card because the drivers hadn't loaded correctly).

More testing is in order.

Well, to put it correctly, it's not the board not supporting SLI but Nvidia's drivers not supporting the X38 chipset (deliberately due to company policy...) wink
With some older nForce-drivers you could actually "hack" it in order to run on non-nforce boards.

Basically, ATi allows multi GPU pairing on any platform while Nvidia only allows it on their own chipsets and only the more expensive ones.
Go figure...

What puzzles me right now is whether this may have anything to do with the problem you are experiencing.
One would think not but who knows...
