Topic: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

This was made with the help of Bâshrat the Sneaky's Tutorial

If you love Bâshrat the Sneaky DriverPacks and you want to know and easy way to make one yourself, well your in luck cuz I found an easy simple way you can make your own DriverPack thats "10 MBs or Less" depending on how many devices you have, the one for my machine is "6 MBs"
First you need a Driver Update/Backup program, I use "Driver Genius Professional" to Update and Backup my Drivers
Free Driver Backup Utils:
DriverGrabber Beta by Siginet, Driver Backup Beta by IcemanND

http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/284/dgpdx3.jpg
Simply update its Driver knowledge Database using the "Live Update" feature, now check to see if you have the latest drivers with the "Update Button", if not download, install them and reboot.
Now check the drivers you want to backup and hit the "Start Backup" BUTTON.
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/8403/renametz3.png
You will be left with files like these, with only the neccesary files needed for DriverPacks Base, Driver Genius leaves the other crap behind, now Rename them to something Short, 2 characters or less. (I delete the Files marked in RED)
http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/7625/folum2.jpg
Create a folder on the Desktop and name it D, inside that folder create a 3 folder and inside the 3 create another folder and name it whatever you want (I named mine R for Rick you can use your first initial if you prefer) put the renamed driver folders into R or whatever you named your folder, now use 7zip to compress it.
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/4318/deskdqk6.png http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/9577/3th6.png http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/3295/rfolderdf9.png
DriverPack Name Example: "DP_Name_wnt5_x86-32_X.7z" Change the part that says "Name" to anything you like, and change "X" to represent Version Number (example 1.0).

Compression: Archive Format=7z, Copresion Level=Ultra, Compression Method=LZMA, Dictionary Size=32 or 64, Word Size=256.
http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/5212/7z2ks5.jpg
You will end up with something like this, your own DriverPack smile
http://img318.imageshack.us/img318/7333/7zipym3.png

Now put it into DriverPacks Base 3rd Party DriverPacks folder and slipstream it into XP, now make ISO burn and Enjoy
Good Luck! Making Your Own big_smile

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

Nice tut!

(I like them when they contain lotsa pics wink).

Though, as to the space issue:
If you use nLite, I find it very easy to shrink my XPCD with SP2 and all rollup packs included (RyanVM resp. Sereby) to a MERE 350~370mb without removing any relevant contents (if you look at it, there is so much garbage on it, staring with MSN Explorer (who needs that when you already got IE?!) and definately not ending with a bunch of language and keyboard packs that you will never ever use (frankly, which apart from your native tongue and maybe English would you use for your OS?).

That stuff removed, I can easily fit all the DriverPacks and all of the 3rd Party DriverPacks minus the printer ones (I could make them fit, but that takes a bit of instinctive feeling on what else to remove...).
On a CD that is.

Other than that, if you publish screen shots, make sure to show all file extensions in Explorer, else it doesn't look very professional wink tongue
(I hope you don't really work with them off!)

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

Updated pics for space, and file extentions

BTW
I use the RVM Integrators Destination Directory to save space, and I remove MSN Explorer, Tour Windows and Internet Games with Vier's cool new Supress Addons (they make their own backup if you wnat to put them back) I also remove WIN9XMIG folder

@ HelmiI just turned the .EXE and .INF and other file extentions ON becuz I just reinstalled my computer to test the DriverPack I made to see if my theory was correct. BTW it was. smile

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

i already told bashrat more then once about this , but he doesnt want to use this he said.
I use this alot

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

I have another idea

How about The Bâshrat the Sneaky DriverPack Maker?... (just like the nLite Addon Maker but for DriverPacks Base)

It can work the same way as this program Driver Genius Pro, It can back up the drivers on a paticular machine and then automatically 7zip it and create a Bâshrat the Sneaky DriverPack.

Wouldnt that be awesome?

Instead of a separate program maybe have it built into DriverPacks Base, yes have DriverPacks Base make its own driverpacks for just that machine

EDIT: @ Helmi I use WinRar cuz of the cool themes smile I use 7zip for Compressing but WinRar for Extracting.

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

I just checked out this Driver Genius Pro and I haven't made my final verdict yet but so far it looks very promising and useful.

Your ideas sound very good, ricktendo64!
I still need to try both AutoIt and AutoImage to even better make creating a UWXPCD totally automatic smile

Anyway, just a question, why do you use WinRAR when 7Zip is completely free and does the task just as well (if not better, IMO).

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

nice tip on the driver tool ricktendo.  i did a quick search on softpedia and found two freeware tools like it at http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Sys … iver.shtml and http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/D … -4729.html .  i haven't tried them out yet but they're well-rated.  also, i don't think the DP name scheme you posted will work.  i think it has to be "DP_NAME_wnt5_x86-32_VERSION.7z" not "DP_NAME_wnt5_x86-32.7z"  that's what it took for me to get it working at least.
cheers,
kevin

Works for me so I dunno...

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

Works for me too vampus8, they are the same just yours has version, DriverPacks Base has no trouble recognizing mine.

Thank you for the links Vampus8 I will try both right now and see if they are any difrent, I will also update the tuto with your links.

@ Helmi: Have you tried your driverpack pack yet?, Howd it go? and How big was it?

You make your DriverPacks manually right?

Funny you ask because I just finished it yesterday night. big_smile

Used Driver Genius Pro to find all the missing drivers on all the PCs in the house (five so far...) and slapped those into a manually-made pack.
Reason I did this was
a) because on one PC the printer service refused to work.
Died just during a prinitng session on page 4 of 6...
Couldn't fix it otherwise so it was time for a reinstall (been running for over a year anyway).
b) my previously created UWXPCD had troubles recognizing the OB SC and trying to manually install the drivers FUBAR'ed the system (either I would get sound with one version but the comp wouldn't restart/shutdown anymore or I wouldn't get any sound but it would shutdown properly...).
c) there haven't been any updates from Bash recently so I thought I'd cover that with my personal pack so far wink

Anyway, it went fine so far, on my test PC that is.
The one it's supposed to be for didn't like my RW it seems...
At least the fake install went surprisingly fast and it couldn't find finish.log...
Currently creating a CD-R to see if it likes that better.
The ODD is somehow dying I feel so no biggy...

The size is, uhm, 20MB 7-zipped.
Fair 'nough, still leaves about 12MB of free space on my CD smile

When time allows, I will post the proper [REQ] threads to the drivers I included (aka those still mising in Bash's packs so he can update them for the next time.
Alternatively, if someone is really interested in it, I could also upload it but since it only contains drivers for devices found on my five PCs it's far from comprehensive (it does contain some Intel and Via chipset drivers as well as Intel WLAN, Realtek Sound and LAN etc so it is somewhat broad).

Siginet on making a Bâshrat the Sneaky DriverPack Maker:

If you guys get all the info needed on how to get the driver info off of a system and get the info to me I may put something together. wink  I think this would be a great addition to my collection of tools. big_smile

You guys are the DriverPack "Experts"... Any advice for Siginet? (Creator of the RyanVM Integrator)

The only advice I got to offer is Bad Advice lol

Help me out guys> http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.p … highlight=

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

hi

I tried the two driver collection free tools, and noticed they do not include the CAT files in their backups.

On the other hand, tools like these can help you determine which driver set you want to select from the CDROM or out of the downloaded file you got from the manufactor.

It may be this is old news to all, but for floppy less machines, a floppy creating driver download can be opened in winimage.

The answer was 42?
Kind regards, Jaak.

In remove .CATs anyway because on my UWXPCD there are so many of them it gives me an error on installation.
Nlite has an option to both disable .CATs as well as truning off notification of unsigned drivers.

Can't say I had any problems so far, but then again I do not know how this setting affects the DriverPacks.
On my custom-made packs, the .CATs are still included since I do not remove anything.
Had some bad experience with missing .EXE files and stuff so I leave it all included.
Doesn't make that much of a different file size-wise anyway...

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

Is it possible to get a offline copy of the tutorial? I can't save it by myself via IE.

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

Works for me, so I'll upload the saved file (MHT) for you in a bit.
Tried making a PDF out of it but it f***ed it up seriously hmm

Re: [Tutorial] Making your own DriverPacks for n00bs

Alright, here you go:

http://files.dodnetwork.com/download.ph … utorial.7z

If you still want the PDF, just tell me, but it doesn't look nearly as readable.

@ricktendo64: check out my updated tutorial. Now you must use this directory structure:

D\3\X\...

instead of

D\X\...

Where D is the DriverPacks root directory, 3 the 3rd party DriverPacks root directory (NEW, to make KTD doable for 3pdps) and X the root directory of your 3rd party DriverPack.
