Topic: [Slipstream] base 8.04.17.RC Mass storage - no drives found

Here's a copy of my original message and the complete log file as requested in the News forum. If I omitted something let mew know.

Downloaded DPs_BASE_80417RC.exe yesterday and called it from within RyanVM Integrator 1.5.3. I was using the RyanVM, his update pack, some addons and the driver packs to create a new CD for my #2 system that has XP Home w/SP2.

Everything went just fine, the ISO was created and the CD burned. Today I booted from the CD and tried a repair install to test things. Booted from the CD, did not press F6 and the setup routine stopped saying no hard drives found. I pressed F3, rebooted, F6'd and thing proceeded ok.

That system has an ABIT BE6-II motherboard with a Promise SATA150 TX2 plus controller card. This controller card is included in DP_MassStorage_wnt5_x86-32_804.7z so was I wrong in assuming I would not have to press F6 and read from the floppy as this new CD was created using the Drivver Pack that included this device?

Or are these drivers not really available to the setup/install routine when booting from the CD and doing a repair or new install?

Re: [Slipstream] base 8.04.17.RC Mass storage - no drives found

if you pretend that you are going to install windows - will it find the HDD in text mode (at the partition selection screen)

It is very likely that reusing the same source caused some corruption of your txtsetup and dosnet files.
Especially if you made any changes to your source after driverpacks. IE adding patches / hotfixes.

If I understand the comments/questions above:

I booted from the CD to test everything I had done and my option was to do a repair install. Initial boot was fine, F6 not selected, and the WinXP setup said no hard drive found therefore no drive to select. (I'm assuming because I'm using the Promise controller card and it does not get loaded/installed till after the boot CD/DVD device is invoked - I know of no way to change this boot order.) Did an F3 as setup required, system rebooted, F6 pressed, drive to repair selected and repair install continued to end.

My source was/is my XP Pro w/SP2 CD which was used by the RyanVM Integator 1.5.3 to do its thing. Drive Packs install was the last thing done. (I am well aware that it must be last with no further installs made.)

Re: [Slipstream] base 8.04.17.RC Mass storage - no drives found

no dont choose the repair option.... pretend you are going to do a clean install - jsut till you get to the selection screen..

I really don't think you are paying attention to what i am saying.

"It is very likely that reusing the same source caused some corruption of your txtsetup and dosnet files.
Especially if you made any changes to your source after driverpacks. IE adding patches / hotfixes."

by running RVM after running driverpacks you can no longer run the driverpacks again.

RVM updates dosnet and txtsetup. then when you run driverpacks the dosnet and txtsetup get restored to their original files (from before driverpacks were added the first time) this removes all entries created by RVM on the second run. (because those entries dont exist in the backed up files.)

YOU CAN'T DO THIS - IT WILL NOT WORK - this will corrupt your files.

you must uninstall driverpacks first or start with a clean source.

I make copys of my source at each stage - in this way i can update patches then make a copy and run DriverPacks on the copy. if i wish to update the packs i just reuse the copy if i must add patches i update the original and then make a new copy and add DriverPacks to that copy. In this way I can make sure that DriverPacks is always last

We state often and loudly that DriverPacks must be the LAST step in your process.

you ran RVM and driverpacks after running the driverpacks. this will not work.
(DriverPacks was NOT last in your process you ran RVM afterwards (and then DriverPacks a second time))
you can only run DriverPacks again if nothing else has been done since the last time you ran DriverPacks.

DriverPacks MUST BE LAST and your source is now corrupted and useless

Re: [Slipstream] base 8.04.17.RC Mass storage - no drives found

hi,
promise card should boot if you select boot from SCSI in boot priority.

I am surprised you want to run XP in a BX440 "powered" mobo.

The answer was 42?
Kind regards, Jaak.

Re: [Slipstream] base 8.04.17.RC Mass storage - no drives found

I have done that if you have a fast PIII and a good amount of ram it works fine...

I will say it again.
I started with an XP Home w/SP2, then ran RyanVM 1.5.3 with updates and addons, then, last item, it called Driver Packs and finished up. There was no previous install of Driver Packs on the XP Home w/SP2 CD I was using.
I can't explain it any more clearly - NO PREVIOUS INSTALL OF DRIVER PACKS.

When the system boots the CD is before the Promise card in the boot order. No SCSI - it is an PATA drive connected to the Promise card.

I've had no problems with running XP on the system (except it is a bit slow but I can live with that).

The motherboard supports a maximum of 768Mb of RAM; which is what I have installed.

The CPU is a PowerLeap Celeron 1.4GHz, identified correctly by XP as an Intel Celeron 1.4Ghz - has been working just fine.

When I boot from the 'new' XP Home CD I created and do not press F6 there is no selection screen, just an error message saying no hard drive detected; so how could I possibly pretend I'm going to do anything when the setup/install routine says there is no hard drive.

And, as I said earlier, when I boot from the CD and press F6 and use the Promise floppy the drive is detected but, to me, that defeats the purpose of having the Driver Packs slipstreamed into the original CD.

I don't know how many more ways I can explain this and to make it clearer.

Re: [Slipstream] base 8.04.17.RC Mass storage - no drives found

Hi ChiefZeke
this is a testfile
see overflow's post, later

you can use winmerge to compare content against release.
I re-downloaded the driver.
There was something odd in P7, and I removed PB (device should be supported by P7)

your log is quite clear about this....

If you want help then get your facts straight...

I can't make this more clear either... I AM LOOKING AT YOUR LOG.
there is no mistake on my part... i see the deleted mass storage files listed and a record that m2 was removed AND txtsetup and dosnet were restored...

Either this is not your log - or you can't follow directions.

Re: [Slipstream] base 8.04.17.RC Mass storage - no drives found

mass storage INI in [P7] missed a HWID. (we was Filtering dupes by hand back then.)
80417RC should clean source and that mass804b_promise should work on 150TXII plus.

The answer was 42?

Re: [Slipstream] base 8.04.17.RC Mass storage - no drives found

After answering the statements and questions posted here last night and sleeping 'on the problem' and trying to figure out where the answer may be I finally worked out the solution.

First I must state that I had been working on updating two CDs; one for my XP Pro systemn and one for my XP Home system.  So I started with a comparison of the two results. A major discrepancy was the Pro system update had folders \I386 and \OEM and the Home system only had \I386. Obviously, first clue as I knew the use of Driver Packs would result in the creation of the \OEM folder.

So, that led me to try to figure out this disparity and while it took a bit of head-scratching the answer ended up being one of paying attention.

When the RyanVM Integrator > Advanced called up DPs_BASE.exe I assumed all parameters and settings would be read from the RyanVM settings and, therefore, would be correct. That was the error. (Pay attention to what you're reading and doing, as I have said to others and had to say again to myself.)

Settings > Location > Select location of platform was still pointing to the XP Pro location and I had not changed it to the XP Home location. Why? Because when RyanVM > Advanced called up DriversPacks BASE 8.04.17.RC I just clicked on the Slipstream button, assuming locations had been read from the RyanVM Integrator and, therfore, were correct. Bad action on my part. (That's why the code was what it was.)

So, that's it.  Sorry for all the turmoil and strife caused. Those posing questions and solutions I thank for their help and would ask everyone to remember what caused my problem and to file it away in your troubleshooting memory bank.

As I said earleir, I'm new at using the Driver Packs and I learned a lesson.

But, keep up all this excellent work.

Re: [Slipstream] base 8.04.17.RC Mass storage - no drives found

RVM Integrator simply launches Base, there is no exchange of info between the programs.
I aplogize that this is not well documented by Me, Ryan, Wim or Siginet...

One thing you can do to improve your process is to use the /settings: switch.

Set your choices in base, then from the 'overview page' export your settings to a file, say Home.ini.
then change the location and settings for your Pro and export them to Pro.ini

then in the RVMIntegrator you can use the command line
yourpathhere\DPs_BASE.exe

and put this on the 'optional parameters' line->  /settings:Home.ini
Or                                                                  /settings:Pro.ini

In this way you can be sure what settings are being called when launched from the integrator.

Is something misin here?

Is there supposed to be an update to the Mass Storage Driver Pack somewhere? The downloads only show version  8.04 - no 8.04b or 8.04c

Thanks

Re: [Slipstream] base 8.04.17.RC Mass storage - no drives found

Hi, it was there, and then I snuffed it after Overflow posted link..
When the file got tested or a new one is up, I prefer to clean up links to old files because people "like" to click on those and dead links can become very frustrating.. It is better to have no link than a broken link.
