Topic: [PROB] Win2K Base 7.01.6, Mass 7.01.1, Intel ICH8R -> BSOD 0x07b

Hi all
I'm pretty new to the awesome DriverPacks, but have encountered a problem with trying to install Windows 2000 onto a hp/Compaq dc7700 with integrated Intel ICH8 SATA RAID.
I get the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE stop error 0x07B.

I have tried incorporating the DriverPack MassStorage 7.01.1 into a Win XP source, and that works on the dc7700.
But, I need to install Windows 2000 onto the dc7700 as it is required for an older Point of Sale system that is incapable of running under WinXP.
I should also point out I have tried using my Win2K/DriverPack builds under a Virtual Machine, and they work fine, but of course that isn't using the MassStorage DP at all.

Also, if I go into the BIOS and change the SATA Emulation from RAID to IDE, I have succesfully used my Win2K/DP build on the dc7700.
Of course this then disables the RAID bios, and then presents each member drive as a "standalone" IDE drive and setup happily used one of those.
This BIOS setting of SATA Emulation is the ONLY RAID-related option I can find in the BIOS and I have been exhaustively through every menu.

I have also tried several times with new source files as I've read sometimes people encountered problems with corrupt files or "remnant" files from previous slipstreams. I have tried using ONLY DP Chipset and MassStorage, and different options for DP Finisher and KTD, but I'm always using "method2".

So, here is my DPs_BASE.ini from the Win2K build:

Now, I can't show you the Finisher log, because it never gets that far.
In fact, after carefully watching setup proceed, I'm pretty sure that Win2K Setup is NOT using the DP MassStorage drivers for even the first step.
When running through the initial part of textmode, you can watch on the bottom of the screen which drivers are being loaded, like for Floppy, CDROM, filesystem, partition manager etc and these are all part of a standard MS Windows setup.
But I never saw any of the "extra" drivers I would expect to see that should have been added by the DP MassStorage, such as the one for Intel ICH8 (iastor).
So Win2K textmode setup gets to the end of loading drivers, then says "Setup is loading" and then appears the BSOD with 0x07B.
This is interesting in that it's not even getting to the DOS GUI mode stage where you can choose where you want to install windows etc.

Curious, I re-ran the WinXP/DP slipstreamed disc I'd made, and sure enough, I can easily spot all the "extra" MassStorage drivers being loaded during textmode.
So, here are the HWIDs, but please bear in mind this was run under the successful WinXP/DP install:

And I cannot find the HWID "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2822&SUBSYS_2801103C&REV_02\3&B1BFB68&0&FA " in that file.
But, I do get a match for "VEN_8086&DEV_2822" so I'm not sure how relevant the rest of the string is.
Anyone have any comments on that?

So now I'm completely confused.
Why does the DP MassStorage slipstream fail with Win2K source (although it says it was successful), yet work with WinXP source?
If anyone can suggest more tests to run or where else to look I'd be very grateful!
Cheers,
tU

Edit:
I've just had a look in the TXTSETUP.SIF for my HWID, and this is what I found:

;PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2822&CC_0104="iastor"

So, What the hey? Does this mean this line has been commented and this driver will not be loaded by setup??
Anyone with any ideas why?
This newbie is confused, but is going to try removing the semi-colon and having another go at loading my Win2K build. Again.

Update:
It WORKS!
Uncommenting the line above, plus any other line/references to "iastor" means that I now have a working Win2K running on my hp/Compaq dc7700 with SATA RAID drives.

My new question is thus:
Why oh why are so many of these drivers "commented out" in the TXTSETUP.SIF file?
Now that I have a better look at this file it seems that MOST of the MassStorage drivers are commented out.
So why are they all commented out?
I thought the whole idea of slipstreaming these mass storage drivers (and especially selecting the textmode checkbox) was that they would then be available so we wouldn't have to use the "press F6 to load 3rd party driver" method.
There should be something to this effect in the FAQ or a stickied comment from a mod or similar somewhere saying that FIRST step is to check that your driver of interest isn't commented out in TXTSETUP.SIF.
Sorry if this sounds like a rant, I really think that these DriverPacks are simply awesome, but I feel like I've wasted a couple of days needlessly here.
Would love to hear from someone in the know...
Cheers,
tU

Re: [PROB] Win2K Base 7.01.6, Mass 7.01.1, Intel ICH8R -> BSOD 0x07b

Windows 2000 has a limited number of drivers that can be loaded at text mode setup. I believe the limit was somewhere around 2.7-2.8 MB (which is the total size of all .sys files added up you're trying to load), if you go higher than that, setup will throw errors. So I chose to comment the less frequently used drivers. BUT the Intel SATA RAID drivers should not be commented... I will look into this issue.

Re: [PROB] Win2K Base 7.01.6, Mass 7.01.1, Intel ICH8R -> BSOD 0x07b

@Bâshrat - thanks very much for the explanation - I wondered if it might be something like that.
If there's anything else you want me to try or info you're after just let me know.
I guess a related question here then, is what is the best way for me to "uncomment" the RAID drivers I think I'm likely to require for a Win2K build?
Was my manual edit of TXTSETUP.SIF the only way or is there a more elegant solution?

If I may, I'd like to propose a slight user-interface modification to the DPBase GUI:
If it detects a Win2K source, and the user selects the checkbox to slipstream the drivers to textmode, that some sort of warning message popup to the effect that users should check their drivers of "potential interest" are enabled in TEXTSETUP.SIF before burning the CD.

I know that use of Win2K is probably rare these days, but I'd be surprised if I'm the ONLY newbie here to be tripped up by this wink
Fantastic work on these driverpacks!
Thanks again,
tU

Re: [PROB] Win2K Base 7.01.6, Mass 7.01.1, Intel ICH8R -> BSOD 0x07b

Hm, that's a good idea. I considered it not necessary at the time, but that's because a tutorial should have been online shortly after that. Now we're months further and there still isn't a tutorial... So yes, it'd be a valuable addition.

And no, there is another way: extracting DP MassStorage, editing the .ini that comes with it and then compressing DP MassStorage again. Aside from that, updating the txtsetup.sif file is the only way.

Re: [PROB] Win2K Base 7.01.6, Mass 7.01.1, Intel ICH8R -> BSOD 0x07b

Ok, thanks for that.
Which are the relevant lines in the DP_MassStorage_wnt5_x86-32.ini file ?
ms_1_exc_disableIfOS= "w2k" - do I just delete this line, or comment it out with a ; ?

I've just had a look and it's interesting to note that both the Ini file inside the MassStorage DP (compressed) and also the one in the QSC directory for textmode use, this line is missing from the [IN-1] section which applies to my HWID.
Does this mean that those drivers should be enabled?
Sorry for the pesky questions here, I'm sure you're very busy...
Cheers,
tU

Re: [PROB] Win2K Base 7.01.6, Mass 7.01.1, Intel ICH8R -> BSOD 0x07b

hi
just delete the QSC (aka quick tream cache)

when you edit the INI, and use base again, it will then undo changes it had done, then restream the  source, and with the edited pack (edited ini), the process "fedits" the files for you.

edit.. >>
actually, I would use a new copy of clean sorce, put pack with edited ini in driverpacks folder, wipe QSC, and let base stream the drivers.

Re: [PROB] Win2K Base 7.01.6, Mass 7.01.1, Intel ICH8R -> BSOD 0x07b

I have encountered the same problem under W2k, but I don't think that the DP_MassStorage_wnt5_x86-32.ini is the reason why the drivers are not integrated, because ALL slipstreamed drivers get commented out in the txtsetup.sif and dosnet.inf, without regard to the  " ms_1_exc_disableIfOS= "w2k" " expression.

Consequently none of the drivers will work.

Could it be that there is a bug in the dpbase, which does not interprete the W2k-disable option in the DP_MassStorage_wnt5_x86-32.ini correctly and disables all mass-storage drivers for W2K???

Re: [PROB] Win2K Base 7.01.6, Mass 7.01.1, Intel ICH8R -> BSOD 0x07b

In that case, there is indeed a bug. The strange thing is that this part has been untouched since August last year or so, and then it was definitely working. Very very strange. Will look into this as soon as time permits me to do so.

Sherlock will have to go to Watson mode... and prepare a win2k for testing..

I recently DriverPacks-streamed 2003 servers editions, and will look at those, but I have not ever done a Win2k so this will take me a while. (I hope I find back the original Disc.)

The answer was 42?

@All - thanks for looking into this folks - much appreciated smile

@sthue - thanks for posting that, it's nice to know someone can confirm the same problem. Of course it may mean a bug OR it might be we're both doing something wrong... tongue

Re: [PROB] Win2K Base 7.01.6, Mass 7.01.1, Intel ICH8R -> BSOD 0x07b

hi

I used base 7.01.6 on a english win2K_sp4, and there is indeed a long list of "commented out" entries in dosnet.inf.
I had notepad replace ;d1 with d1 to uncomment them.

while reading dosnet.inf, I noticed another weirdo at the very bottom

adpu160m.sys
ipsraidn.sys
dac960nt.sys

these had no d1 nor ;d1 in front of them.

Looking at txtmode.sif reveals sections where all entries are "commented out"
textmode mass storage files, and mass storage HWIDS too..
(I looked at an not-yet-streamed dosnet inf and want to closely compare those, but it does seem ALL that should be added are in, but inactivated by the "comment" .)

I'll be replacing the "comments" with nothing soon, and run a live trial.

smile you guys did not do it the wrong way. wink

Nice find JT

Re: [PROB] Win2K Base 7.01.6, Mass 7.01.1, Intel ICH8R -> BSOD 0x07b

hi muiz

did it with base 7.02 nightly and newest test versions
did it with the current released versions, and then also used base 608.6 with older packs that are compatible with 608.6
they all had these three file name without "locator" at bottom in the dosnet.inf after win2000 was streamed.

These three files are files that get updated, and found higher up in the inf.
But it surprised me the lines are there, at bottom, in that form.

oh
on the last trial, using 608.6
when I uncomment some of the driver files that my test-machine needs, (I also looked in all other relevant sections, in both dosnet.inf and txtsetup.sif), I could install 2000, but finisher gave me an array error .
