The following link is an example of the type of behavior i had seen.
http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx … a8f3217810 *
Note the regkey HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ask.com.tmp & the 'location=' variables towards the bottom of the page.
Turns out to have been a mod deleting my posts due to 'false & libelous accusations' (not a direct quote, that's copyrighted by that mod).

  Is no one else willing or able to confirm or deny what i've seen occur before an EULA can be viewed?  sad

from post above concerning posts on an official forum:  http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic. … 757#p45757

Someone deleted my topic concerning geodata collected pre-EULA  (not i - never had the privileges,; doubt anyone hacked into my account either for same reason).
I attempted to appeal to a mod as a new topic (TOU didn't explain how to start an appeal) only to have that disappear in short order.
I never violated TOU as far as i know, IMHO & used level-headed netiquette.  I even suggested that it must be a bug, rather than making accusations.
I added some new independent info that corroborated my claims, as no one had refuted unequivocally.  That's when posts started disappearing, even the whole topic back over two months.  Never received a single 'PM' about the 'takedown'.

No enlightenment seems forthcoming from that forum.  I must have struck a raw nerve.

Apparently 'Caveat Emptor' applies to 'Free AntiV-Adware', too. sad

Ah, USB-powered; therefore HDD's are limited to a current capacity of 0.5A @ 5V for a standard USB2.0 port (depending upon USB-port fuse size).  This shouldn't be much of an issue if connecting to the rear of a newer motherboard, as advised by Zalman, as i've seen some using as high as 2.5A fuses (check mobo manual or OEM support page for specs; look for 'Dedicated USB Charging Port' for 1.5A max.).  Only use cables with gold-alloy plated pins as is standard in USB specifications to prevent excessive 'Voltage Drop' (not to mention avoiding the 'tin-whisker' phenomenon; ie: that white fluffy powder anywhere there is Pb-free solder &/or Sn-plating; not to be confused with 'tin-plague'; see NASA - Goddard for more info).  See Figure 1b in the following Intel document, pertaining to 'Voltage Droop'.
http://www.usb.org/developers/whitepape … boards.pdf
I see some users on that Newegg page have reported losing connectivity periodically; this may be why.  A dual-USB cord (Y-cable) with the data pins isolated from one male-end would be a likely 'fix', allowing a stable 1.0A minimum for the drive.

"Some devices, such as high-speed external disk drives, require more than 500 mA of current[39] and therefore cannot be powered from one USB 2.0 port. Such devices usually come with Y-shaped cable that has two USB connectors to be plugged into a computer. With such a cable, a device can draw power from two USB ports simultaneously."
from:  https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/USB

Don't even think of upgrading the firmware for this enclosure (if available) if stable connectivity is of any issue!!!

I'd hesitate to think of what endless torment connectivity issues could cause even the most patient of people, not to mention damage to the drive itself as some of it's firmware may be embedded with the platters!  Growing fonder of checksums for large files, too. yikes
I note Zalman suggests holding the 'Jog switch' down for 3 seconds to safely remove if it's not available thru-GUI & then detaching the cable to power off (for the SE version).

...ah the petty details some neglect to add in technical documentation... and the errors sometimes!

The write-protect tab is a feature i admire.  Is there a separate flash-drive embedded? If not, how do you select the chosen '_ISO'?
What were the power-pack details/mfg. and ratings, BTW?  Some generic power-packs should be replaced if possible, IMHO.

Updated BCM43xx 'NDIS5' WHQL'ed drivers for WinXP (x86 & x64) {DriverVer=06/28/2011, 5.100.82.94 - same HWIDs as 5.100.235.19 above} available here --> http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc … w803ww.exe smile

* i note peak D-P-C latency is ~66% that of 5.100.235.19 - need confirmation for 'n' incl. 5GHz
         - this should be observed by a statistically-significant system latency decrease,
           &  statistically-significant performance/battery-cycleTime increases smile

*** installation note for those using previous BCM utility:
          1) export your connection authentication details through the 'Wireless Networks' tab in the utility first
                or make note of your previous authentication method & password(s)
          2) uninstall the old utility before installing new version

I forgot to mention this AR701x/AR9271 USB-WiFi
   DriverVer=04/20/2011,8.0.0.84 for Vista,
   DriverVer=04/20/2011,2.0.0.62 for Windows7 including a utility that appears to support all major Windows versions
here --> http://download.ecsusa.com/dlfileecs/dr … theros.zip big_smile

Added support for Panasonic, Sony & MS (xbox360) devices here --> http://www.mediafire.com/file/94tprkx46 … 0WiFi-N.7z big_smile
It's not quite as new as v9.2.0.19 mentioned above.  At least this one has a known OEM link & supports more HW AFIK, IMHO (LOL).

Edit AR701x/AR9271_Win7_v9.2.0.19 (station-drivers sourced) inclXbox360WiFi-N & utility
here --> http://www.mediafire.com/file/n1whlggz6 … 0WiFi-N.7z smile
Beware that it supports less HW than the v2.0.0.62 driver.

Utility companies claim to have tested their devices for 'hackability'.  They never talked to Mr. Travis Goodspeed; however.  He uses children's toys to defeat wireless protocols using PIP injection. lol

Make the forum three-tiered.  New members can only post in one small group of topics separated from the existing forum.
That will be where 99.9% of spam would end up (19 times out of 20).  Op confirmation &/or a threshold of posts allow the prospective new user to post in the existing main forum.  This could simplify things for an op. hmm

The final version of the 'Kinect for Windows' should not look like the current version.

Actually, now that i think about it, who really wants an API-controlled set of 3D cameras constantly monitoring everything a user does & says?  Who really wants to buy two of them to enable this?  I shudder to think of the possible privacy concerns surrounding such HW.
Shouldn't it be obvious to MS what the 'killer app' could be?  Simply (& inexpensively) adding multi-touch capabilities to non-touch monitors regardless of OS!  Add a microphone or two, tip your hat to MicroSoft & say "thanks for the new speech API"! big_smile

In addition, isn't 20grand a little cheap to distribute amongst ten start-ups?  Or have i read that rong?

edit: i did read that wrong, it is $20,000 per top-ten startup.  My apologies.

One other suggestion that i saw on the forum mentioned in my previous post was to remove the "Powered by PunBB" on the bottom of the page (if allowed by TermsOfAgreement) to assist in avoiding being added to 'spamlists' in the future.
