Topic: [REQ]Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio on Dell 1525

I've gone and messed up orig post got overwritten by my reply.

idea was to flag SAD 2.5 installed / microsoft reco sound driver on win7 with a Dell insperion 1525

Lots of people with Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio struggling.  I had issue where the Mic worked, but only just and Skype couldn't cope and it kept deselecting the audio device on boot (hence no sound coming out for callers).

I found a dell driver that is for Vista but it installs fine and the mic is loud and clear and skype works normally.

Vista Driver that works is  6.10.0.5866 dated 15/02/2008  (dell R218148)

Re: [REQ]Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio on Dell 1525

This is problematic for me as well, on the same model of Inspiron.

Thank you for pointing that driver out, that package has WHQL'ed 64bit components, as well.

[off-topic]

This is problematic on NT5 as well.  There it's a "Code 28".
Penryn works well (1-pin difference, "Test7"-N/C).

[/off-topic]

It's a "IDT STAC9220X5" or "SigmaTel 9205" according to version A17 BIOS setup.

If you have HDMI plugged into a display supporting audio, the SAD2 package will work correctly, i surmise.

Re: [REQ]Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio on Dell 1525

Hadn't tried HDMI port.  Driver was saying installed and happy.

Just tried a movie using HDMI on to panasonic plasma TV, picture was perfect.... but no sound

HDMI device / driver (pretty sure SAD installed) listed as Sound , video and game controller is

Intel High Def Audio HDMI
WHQL 6.10.1.2089 dated 15 / 03 / 2010

Re: [REQ]Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio on Dell 1525

So just been hunting and got nowhere.... except background info (FYI I'm running A17 Bios too)

The 965 graphics driver is supposed to give the sound out of the HDMI port ???  I couldn't find anything on Intel site about HDMI drivers although they seem to know people have issues with Win7 (I'm running the latest which is also the one they reco).

I tried the driver utility that said chipset could be updated to 9.20.1021 but it made no difference and their tool now says I have 9.20.1025

Others are saying does it pick up the HDMI sound output when using the port... if you go in to Control Panel - Sound, you should see two devices the Sigmatel (to headphone sockets, speakers etc.)  and a second listed as the Intel HDMI digital output... make sure its using HDMI.  However in my configuration above, I see the default one is the Sigmatel output and the HDMI is missing but I have a second listing for SPDIF digital output !!! which is not selected.

So I put a vista drive back in and booted up.  Checking Control Panel - Sound, here it shows Sigmatel and the Intel HDMI, like its supposed to.

What is a little odd is you can't select the HDMI output... its greyed out and then when I checked I got picture and no sound and I thought here we go... However, after some basic testing....

Once the HDMI port and the TV have gone though its handshaking protocol it Auto switched to the HDMI digital output (and the Sigmatel is greyed out) now fire up a video file and you get picture and sound.  (Before I was running a video file in media player) before the handshake and it never switched.

Vista drivers (on Vista 32 bit windows) that do as its supposed to are

Graphics 7.14.10.1253 dated 13/04/2007
HDMI     6.10.0.2025 dated 26/03/2007

hope this helps

Re: [REQ]Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio on Dell 1525

Sorted it..

Reloaded graphics driver from Intel site 8.15.10.1930 (can't find a dell one)
during install it pops up saying are you sure you want to install an OLDER Intel HDMI driver 6.10.01.2077 dated 10/07/2012
(it had 6.10.1.2089 dated 15 /03 /2010 which I'm pretty sure was added by SAD from graphics 12 03 packs )

clicked yes and rebooted

Now under control panel - sound it listed TWO devices sigmatel audio and sigmatel SPDIF (but now you can change between the two manually, pretty sure you couldn't before) sadly no Audio out of the HDMI port yet.

However... after the handshake across HDMI... this time when you go back in to control panel - sound, you find a third HDMI device comes up BUT only the sigmatel audio is selected... now right click HDMI and click set as default ... YOU GET a green tick beside BOTH sigmatel sound and HDMI device and the sound swaps automatically between the two if handshake to other HDMI takes place.

Rather strangely AFTER a reboot control panel - sound is no longer showing the HDMI device but when you connect via HDMI after handshake it is back and it still swapped automatically between the laptop and the TV and vice versa

Re: [REQ]Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio on Dell 1525

TechDud, worth a try....

I just posted the issue on graphics pages to flag fault...

However re reading what I did... Vista got it right out of the tin, may be the device is there after handshake in win7 with the driver as is...

Maybe if you check in control panel - sound once handshake across HDMI has taken place... the third device COULD be there to enable as I mention above as I now find it with the earlier driver

Re: [REQ]Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio on Dell 1525

Currently i have no access to a working display or audio device with an HDMI input.
BTW, I thought the third HD audio device was the HD modem.

Have you found that restarting any audio application helps, or even a restart of Windows?  Maybe that only applies to XP though.

In addition, i note the inclusion, on the mobo, of a Silicon Image HDMI transmitter supporting HDMI v1.2

There is a diagram included in that document that graphically represents the mobo's connections.

I also note that one may have far more control of video modes via VGA, btw.

I apologize for not being more helpful.

Re: [REQ]Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio on Dell 1525

... same hardware different result depending on op sys used.

running Vista 32 bit in control panel - sound options, you get 2 devices ALL the time
1) Sigmatel audio
2) Intel HDMI, (HDMI is greyed out but comes alive after handshake)

running Win7 32 bit in control panel - sound options, you get 2 devices
1) Sigmatel audio
2) Sigmatel SPDIF digital output (which I didn't think it had)

after I loaded the older driver on win7 I discovered after handshake a 3rd device pops up in the list - the correct Intel HDMI but was not selected for use.  After selecting it once, it continues to work (like I would expect, automatically doing the right stuff in the background unknown to a user and remains like this after rebooting)

but it still lists 2 devices all the time (one of which shouldn't be there - re reading your last post - maybe it should be there in Vista as well?) a third, (the correct secondary device) appears once HDMI handshake has happened

... I'm happy mines working, I was just keen to know if you could check behaviour of the later Intel driver that was added by the driver pack.  I only got things working with the older one but I learnt something on the journey so maybe the later one works as well once you understand its doesn't come set up right just by installing the driver.

Re: [REQ]Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio on Dell 1525

From the aforementioned Silicon Image Product Brief on page one you can see that the video & I2C buses are linked to the HDMI transmitter and the audio is facilitated by the actual codec chip.  They do not detail any connections between the IGP and the Audio Codec, though, yet i infer that they are indeed there.

Silicon Image wrote:

"The SiI1392 supports a variety of
audio interfaces including S/PDIF and Intel HD-
Audio interface to enable broad audio compati-
bility. When using the high-resolution HD-Audio
port, this chip is capable of supporting the DVD
audio standard and other digital audio formats
consisting of up to eight channels at 192 kHz."

But the manual also states that audio output can be obtain from this connector, so it would be a s-video connector with 7 wires instead of two. In the manual, it shows two types of adapter that allows to connect a tv with s-video or component, plus audio which can be either standard audio (probably stereo) or numerical audio. Unfornately the book doesn't specify the part number for this adapter. Technical support didn't know the part number neither did the Dell part department. It can only be found in the US Dell site, but not in Canada."

I read "numerical audio" as "Digital Audio".  Anyone interested in a "pinout"?

I wonder; is the Intel driver interfering with the actual IDT/SigmaTel driver?

It may be that the order of installation is of importance.
What happens in Vista when the Intel HDMI audio driver is withheld from installation?
