Topic: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

I have been vigorously trying to install windows xp on my hp laptop. After research I realized that there are driver problems and was thus led to this website. I have dowloaded and slipstreamed storage, lan, chipset, and wan driver packs in different combinations to little avail.

The good.

Before I started slipstreaming the storage driver packs I recieved a stop error screen before windows xp boot disk could even get to the drive select page. Since I started with the new drivers I get past that, and setup completes without problems.

The bad.

After the first restart in the instalation proccess it goes to the windows spash screen for about 5 seconds and then bamn, the same windows stop screen error. "Stop 0x0000007b, A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent dammage to your computer." This is the same error I used to get durring setup.

Why would the drivers load up fine in setup, and then crash after a reboot?

Any help is greatly apreciated, thanx.

Re: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

During "textmode" setup, the drivers are specially selected from the dpms .ini file.  Once the drive is formated and the setup transistions to the "GUI mode" setup, then all the available drivers are scanned and Windows will pick what it thinks is the most suitable one between T-36 and T-33 of setup.  If it's not compatible, the system will crash as you've found out.

Re: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

I just tried something new for with interesting results. Apart from the driver downloads at hp wesite for my laptop which contain no xp drivers I did a search for AMD sata drivers and found one. I tried sliping it onto a disk without DriverPacks Base using nlite. This time I got a error that the file amdbusdr.sys was missing. So i did a search on my computer for that file and I found it in one of my driver pack archives. Trying now to install by adding that file to the windows disk.

Re: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

Use the HWID tool linked in my signature.
Don't use nlite!

Re: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

Cool program thank you, but do you have any good idia's how I can run that program on my laptop which has no OS?

Re: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

Well, in my opinion, you should just restore it back to the Win7 factory image and leave it there.  Win7 is a much better product than XP.  On your machine, HP doesn't even support Vista let alone XP.
You're asking for trouble by staying with XP.

But to answer your question.  Restore the Win7 image, run the HWID program, post the results here, then hope & pray that we could possibly help you get XP on an unsupported platform.

Re: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

I have the system restore disks but the key code is rubed off on the bottom sticker of the laptop and the system restore disks only let you intall to the laptop hard drive which is in the mail waiting on a warenty return. I am trying to install windows on an external drive so I can get it running before the mail system comes through because I need it for work. Not only that but I would like to have a working version of xp on it for other reasons.

I still don't get why setup could continue and run fine but that the drivers loaded on the disk wouldn't work after reboot. Anyway, again any help is apreciated, ty for keeping in touch.

Re: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

You don't need the code on the sticker.  It's worthless anyway.  The license key & certificate is embedded in the restore disc itself and once you restore the image you'll find Win7 is already activated.
We can't work on a fix until you post your HWIDs.  They're important.

Re: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

Yo so I found this website which lists all my divices + or - a few depending on the make of the pc. I mostly know which ones I have out of those. http://www.getpcmemory.com/drivers/down … p-drivers/ Is this enough information to progress?

On two websights i've read that I just need to slipstring in the sata drivers to get the setup to work. But when I do that alone I get errors saying that i'm missing inf files. Then when I include the inf files it asks for even more inf files! lol i've gone through like 20 blank disks allready. Finally I just coppied ALL the inf files from the driver pack to the xp cd while only slip stringing in the drivers that i know I need. That resulted in a successfull initial startup but with a blue screen on restart(same result as when I used dp base). When I include only a few inf files I can get the initial setup to go to starting windows but then another blue screen before even start up.

Why is it asking for INF files when other people tell me that I only need to slipstring the actual drivers?

I'm likely to keep going through disks here but I have only 7 left so i'm gona wait on your advice before I continue.

Thanx again for the support. If I still can't continue then i'll just reinstall windows 7 when the hard drive arives here in a week. But I'm still gona want to crack this nut! So please do check back on me in a week or so if we can't get things rolling now.

Re: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

This message comes from my laptop which is running far better and faster with windows xp then it has ever ran with windows 7. I removed the HD from this so I could send it back under refund but the conditions were that I package it in 2 inch thick rubber foam. When the post office didn't have this, nor office max I was delayed on my mailing until I could find the proper packaging demanded by seagate.

Yesterday I decided to try and install windows with a hd in the bay thinking that maybe it would make a difference even though I was installing to an external usb hard drive. Then during the install, I considered installing to the windows 7 recovery partition thinking that perhaps the damaged portion of the hard drive might be separated from this.

Presto! Windows xp installs beautifully. It took me a while to find the right video drivers but experiencing this OS with this hardware was worth all the hours of labor.

In retro spec, the problems must have been focused on the external hard drive or the USB drivers.

I still need to send this damn hard drive back though so I ghosted the install to my external drive with hope that I can boot off of it while the hd is in the mail. Failure. No blue screen of death like before but the laptop simply reboots after a few second of the windows splash screen.

Do you have any clue as to how I can fix this so I can have something to use while my hard drive is in the mail?

Re: Windows XP on HP pavilion dv4-2045dx Please help!

Any luck with SeaTools DOS on the offending drive (not through USB)?   http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?l … 04090aRCRD
You may want to clone the drive first.
Do you not have a limited time period for the validity of an RMA?  If you're near the end of your time limit, why not just clone the drive, & bite-the-bullet and wait the two weeks for shipping.  I always use Registered (&Unbuffered?) Postal Mail, since $100 insurance is included, delivery times (2weeks max) & costs are about $18CDN.
