Micro$oft has been locking out users, in effect, by demanding new information from it's users.
Demanding a telephone number is a little akward, yet the insistence of an alternate email address seems silly. The demand of complete information is erroneous, as not all users of the former Hotmail have a telephone number and/or alternate email address. Even SkyDrive has periodically denied me the ability to download publically-available files by OnePiece directly from his SkyDrive Account without logging in to my MS Account.
Previously i have been avoiding this BS with "Hotmail" by clicking my Profile (upper-RH) and accessing the Inbox that way.
Lately, MS has removed any links to the Inbox, an obvious oversight. If this has you stymied, use the following link after logging in to access your Inbox.
https://snt124.mail.live.com/default.aspx?rru=inbox
If you are not using https,
... try this one: http://mail.live.com/default.aspx?rru=inbox
... or check your web browser's history (if you haven't deleted it).
When you do access your Inbox, that may be a good time to backup your Contacts, especially if you are considering a move to another email service. Unfortunately, I do not know of a way to back up the emails other than to save each individually.
