Topic: [NEEDS REPLY] Promise SATA 378 not detected during text mode setup

tryed with an xp sp2 os
all newest at the moment dp and base
slepstreaming ok
but
not found:
promise 378 (one hd sata connected to that controller to load the bios during os install, but not recognized in the hds list), and the need to use downlaoded driver to see the hd in xp
dwl +120
(and a little error after the reboot: rendering sli deactivated, but perhaps is a nvidia driver issue)

I've added your specific HWID to DriverPack Sound B 6.09. But your device already was supported.

I've added:

, but 

PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_3373

was already supported, which also supports your device!

Could you please post the relevant part of your setupapi.log (in the %systemroot% directory, which is most of the time C:\WINDOWS) (search for the string "PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_3373&SUBSYS_80F51043"), it could help determining why the correct driver did not get loaded.

You can manually test the workaround by searching your \I386\txtsetup.sif file for a line in which the string "PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_3373" exists, duplicating that line and then editing the duplicated line so the "PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_3373" gets changed to "PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_3373&SUBSYS_80F51043".

EDIT:

Could you please post your DPs_BASE.ini? Just to make sure that you did slipstream DriverPack MassStorage text mode (which is of course necessary).

just tryed (base 6.09) with a win2k sp4 (the closed thread is not related to a w2k3 never tryed), and xp
and just to the hd selection (not full install)
win2k: only the pata controller finded and related hds
winxp: pata and sata via finded, i cannot see the promise's connected hd

That setupapi.log is really crucial to solve this issue. Any chance you can do another test with JUST Windows XP and the DriverPacks, nothing else? I'm afraid I won't be able to solve the issue otherwise.

And I still find it strange that your HDD is not detected, it really should be. Can you please post your DPs_BASE.log? And could you please verify in your BIOS that the Promise 378 controller is not disabled?

I have the same problem with promise fastrack sata 378.
I think the reason of that problem is that there are 2 version of drivers for 378.
One is when u have set the controler as raid and the othe when is set as ata (ide).
So driverpack include only the first driver (fastrack raid 378).
The second driver can be found at page of asus.com

I can't try this because i dont know how.

Here's my $.02.

PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_3373&SUBSYS_80F51043&REV_02\3&267A616A&0&40: WinXP Promise SATA378 (tm) IDE Controller

...is my onboard SATA378 chip on my Asus A8V.  I didn't realize till later that the devices on the Promise SATA's weren't working.  To get them to work, I tried many drivers, I had to settle on v1.0.0.27.  The newer drivers on ASUS's website didn't work for me.  The drivers that were even newer from Promise's website didn't work either.  They would both come up with "This Device Cannot Start (Code 10)".  Even a reboot, my devices still didn't come up.  I also was checking in Disk Management.

When I finally settled back to v1.0.0.27, everything worked in Device Manager, but I had to "activate" the drives in Disk Management.

Where did I get the v1.0.0.27 drivers?  Well I don't remember.  I did a backup of my drivers a while back and can not find them on the web anywhere.  I'm thinking I got them from ASUS's website but from a different motherboard that had the same Promise chip.

this promise 376 and 378 is a very tough nut, and I think it won't get cracked easily.

They use same generic HWID, and this generic HWID is found in all downloads.
Even TX4000 driver has this 378/376 HWID in it.

1; I read here that a newer driver does not work on an older machine.

2; The drivers have different content in the SYS files for 2000, 2003, and XP
(and the differences are in functions like cache settings.)
3; The HWIDS are same in those with a single HWID for 378, yet different versions do not work?
4; ditto for 376,
5; the HWID for 378 and 376 are same..

6; Those in [P-2] and [P-2-A] use a same INF for all OSes, and at bottom it says XP where the driver is intended for 2000
(That is not a good thing either, I guess. It gets confusing. )

NOT DONE; Removal of the HWID lines that support 378 and 376 in both INF
DONE; Make [P-2] load for XP, make [P-2-A] load for 2000.
DONE; change OS description in the INF
DONE; add the specific HWID to the INF.

If this still won't work, this proves that newest driver does not support older.
And then you will have to unpack.
Then replace with your driver. XP to [P\2], and 2k to subfolder [P\2\A]
edit out the HWIDS your driver does not support in the INI. [P-2] [P-2-A]
7zip the INI and D folder, and use it for a test.

The answer was 42?

It's still not working, I'll replace the drivers with my own as you suggested.
And otherwise I'll stick with nLite for the textmode drivers.

I got really curious about this one and downloaded a whole lot of drivers.

the driver in this test version is NOT from MSI
it was one version younger than what I got at Promise.

And yet, it might work now.
When I saw that no driver I had downloaded had the 378/376 listed along with these;
FasttrakPCI_TX4000, PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_6629
FasttrakPCI_TX4000, PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_3371
FasttrakPCI_TX4000, PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_3319 >

I removed PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_3376,PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_3373 and that specific one that had been added there.
That was what I had NOT done this morning, but my gutfeeling this was wrong bugged me.
And when it keeps bugging me, I can get really curious..

Let us hope that one part of the story here proves False, that an updated driver can support an older chip.

I did NOT include newest drivers where that said it needed this or that specific BIOS to work, because that would become a mess.
(there are some Silicon Image stories here that prove this..)
What this means is that we will have to have a outline on how one can do this for one's own needs.
That tutorial does not yet exist.

another note, in the test version above, those drivers are not disabled for win2K
When one tries this now, a memory error IS possible.
When you have that memory error in 2K, one fast fix is to unpack, add this line to some entries that do not have it..and repack. the line that disables drivers for 2K is:
ms_1_exc_disableIfOS="w2k"
