Topic: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

I have been fighting with the driverpacks on some new pc's we got in.  Using AutoImage, I set up images with the latest and greatest driverpacks.  I set up an image with each driver pack.  All of them worked for the GX520 except that the Chipset driverpack locks up the system on first boot.  When trying to boot into safe mode, it locks up at mup.sys.

Any ideas on a fix?  Anybody else with GX520's and similar problem?

My apologies.  This post should be moved to chipsets.

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

Not especially.  I have used the latest driverpacks and w/ the latest base (as of this post) without the chipset drivers and I don't find any problems.  I have followed a few leads off of your post and others on the net but have been unable to resolve the issue.  I am still getting lockups when I apply the chipset driverpack.  The way around this has been to apply all driverpacks except for the chipset drivers and apply the intel chipset drivers offered via Windows Update after the initial windows installation.

I did try to exclude the intel drivers w/ the chipset driverpack and use my own packaged 3rd party driverpack with the drivers that I know work and I still had a lockup.  I am wondering if another vendors drivers are conflicting w/ these.  It seems odd but I am at a loss as to how to troubleshoot this.

There is still testing that I need to do to determine the true culprit in this scenario.  However, I have about 300 of these desktops to deploy and a very tight timeline so I have opted just to carry out the installation and install the chipset drivers via a post-install script I wrote.  It seems to work for my scenario.

I will try to keep you informed on my progress.

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

I have also experienced the same problem with Dell OptiPlex GX520.  The 6.05 version of the chipset driver pack worked correctly. However, 6.08 and 6.09 cause problems.

I can also help out in exploring a possible solution.

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

Could you both (drizzle and zookeeper) post your HWIDs? Check my sig for a tool or just copy/paste a DPsFnshr.log.

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

This is the original chipset driver for the Dell Optiplex GX520. As you can see, it's version 7.0.0.1019.

The driver in DriverPack Chipset that supports this chipset, is in particular the driver in D\C\I\xp\ich7core.inf, which is version 7.0.0.1020. I can only guess, but I'm confident that this driver works fine.

The only way to isolate the issue is to gradually add and leave drivers. First only use the Chipset drivers. If the problem persists, then that's where we need to look for the cause. As soon as I have the test results of such a test from either of you,  I can continue to eliminate possible causes.

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

I will attempt to narrow down the cause.

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

I created an unattended install CD of Windows XP SP2 and only slipstreamed the ChipSet driverpack 6.09.1. I did not slipstream the text mode MassStorage drivers and did not slipstream any other driver packs.

Unfortunately, it still fails.  The text mode portion of Windows XP install is successful. All of the T-minutes steps are also successful. When the system reboots, the Windows XP logo is presented and the three blue dots move across the screen, then the dots freeze and the computer automatically reboots. Upon reboot, Windows XP informs us that a prior reboot failed and we have the option to continue booting normally (which simply causes the failure and automatic reboot) or we have the option to boot into safe mode (which works).

Since I did not slipstream the MassStorage text mode drivers, I had to modify the Dell Optiplex GX520 BIOS setting for the SATA controller so that it will function in compatibility mode.

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

OK. Now make a custom DriverPack with ONLY the driver I linked to in my previous post. If you don't know how to make your own DriverPack, check the tutorial in the 3rd party DriverPacks forum.

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

I created a driverpack that only contained the Dell version 7.0.0.1019, which was downloaded using your link.

The problem still exists. I'm surprised.

On the failing systems, I am able to boot into "Safe mode with command prompt"

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

I performed a comparison of intel drivers that are included with 6.09.1 against 6.05.

Based on the hwids, the Dell OptiPlex GX520 uses the following:

6.05               6.09.1              Compare
======        ======         ======
ich7ide.inf       ich7ide.inf        Same version number
ich7id2.inf       ich7id2.inf        Same version number, except that 6.09.1 has moved the ich7id2.inf and ich7id2.cat file to \SP subfolder
ich7core.inf     ich7core.inf      Same version number
dmi_pci.inf      dmi_pci.inf       Same version number
ich4core.inf     ich4core.inf      Same version number
ich2br.inf        ?                      ich2br.inf and ich2br.cat are no longer included in 6.09.1 (They are not part of the Dell or Intel download)
945.inf            945.inf             Different version numbers,  6.09.1 uses 8.1.0  and  6.05 uses 7.2.2

I found it strange that the files ich2br.inf and ich2br.cat are no longer included in the dell and intel downloads. The hwids in the system refer to DEV_244E, which is referenced in ich2br.inf, dmi_pci.inf and ich4core.inf

Out of curiousity, I created another tiny driverpack that only included the 6.09.1 intel chipset drivers AND I added the ich2br.inf and inch2br.cat. It still fails.

Dell OptiPlex GX520 current status:
----------------------------------------
Success -> Only install Driverpack Chipset 6.05 (no other driverpacks used and no text mode mass storage drivers)
Success -> Only install Intel Driver that was included in Driverpack Chipset 6.05

Failure -> Only install Driverpack Chipset 6.09.1
Failure -> Only install Intel Driver that was included in Driverpack Chipset 6.09.1
Failure -> Only install Dell chipset driver (created tiny chipset driverpack that only contained this)
Failure -> Only install Intel Driver that was included in Driverpack Chipset 6.09.1 plus ich2br.inf and ich2br.cat

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

Well, then the best solution is clear. You should use the latest DriverPack Chipset, but remove the ich7* files, the ich4core.* and the 945.* files.

Then copy the same files from DriverPack Chipset 6.05 and ALSO copy the ich2br.* files. That should be the work-around that allows you to install on the Dell GX520 flawlessly and at the same time keep the highest compatilibity with all other chipset devices as possible.

Let me know if this works!

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

I am having the same issue with a Dell GX620 pc.  Since I'm new here and with driverpacks in general, I'm not sure I understand how to do the work around.

Do I unzip the latest Chipset driverpack, then remove the files mentioned, unzip the older Chipset driver pack (6.05), move/copy the files needed to replace the ones deleted, then re-zip the driver pack?

Also, where do I get the older Chipset Driver Pack from?

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

[Bâshrat the Sneaky] The proposed solution of using the ich7*, ich4core.* and 945.* files from the 6.05 with the rest of 6.09.1 does NOT work.

@Bâshrat the Sneaky and @edenkers: The proposed solution to the problem was to unpack the latest Chipset driverpack (6.09.1), remove the files mentioned, unpack the older chips driver pack (6.05), move/copy the files needed to replace the ones deleted, then re-zip the driver pack.

Unfortunately, when I tested this solution it also failed.

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

I have the same problem with the dell gx520 & gx620.

Same problem with Desktop & tower versions

if its failing near mup.sys then isnt it an AGP/video driver issue..?

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

Can someone email me the 6.05?

Re: [FIXED in 7.06] Chipset 6.0.8 locks up Dell Optiplex GX520

I have also experienced the same lockup on a Optiplex GX620. I would be interested in trying the 6.05 version. Can you make it publicly available or mail it to me.

If I have time over the next few days I'll look into it a bit further.
