Topic: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

New Latitude E5410 has Disk Read Error after initial reboot during install
Set Disk mode to non AHCI and same disk installs fine

I am looking into the packs now to see what I can find but wanted to give the feedback...

EDIT:

Both the new Dell driver and the new Intel Driver are:
; **    Filename:  iaAHCI.INF
; **    Revision:  Version 9.6.0.1014
; **    Date:      3/3/2010
; **    Abstract:  Windows* INF File for Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology Driver
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchR … es+Chipset

I will try the new driver shortly...

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

Hmmmm.... what am I missing??? I updated the driver in the Mass Pack and tried to run a test but right after it starts the boot and says analyzing it just sits their and hangs... if I change the BIOS to ATA it runs the install... but it actually got further in the install process before so I am wondering if this is a clear case of Mass Storage drivers or am I looking in the wrong direction?

I did try the same disk in a E6400 and it didn't exhibit the same symptom and I also tried a new WIN7 disk in the E5410 and that started fine... I need a drink lol

EDIT:
I just redid the Mass Storage Pack and started from scratch but again the damn system just hangs there... just to make sure the system is OK I took a new ENT WIN7 and did a complete install on the same system with no problems

I uploaded the pack so you could take a look:

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

The Saga Continues and if anyone can shed some light on this I would REALLY appreciate it:

After I did the full WIN7 install on the E5410 I decided to try the exact same disk that had failed previously... well to my shock the disk continued to run, started copying the files and then got to the point of the reboot to start the GUI.... then BAM the Disk Read error appeared again. I tried to reboot and see if I could repeat the error and DAMN it hangs and wont continue after I tell it to boot from CD. This is unreal!!! I changed the BIOS back to ATA and as I type this it is installing. This is one of those problems that I will continue to work on for quite sometime this evening and I will report my findings.

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

Well intermittent problems are by far the most difficult to diagnose.
Do you have an external usb DVD you can try?  Sounds to me like the drive is having trouble reading burned discs but pressed discs are OK.  Classic laser problem.
Check the disc in another system by installing to VirtualBox.  If the disc also fails on another system, then it could be a bad burn.

Checking the SMART data on the HDD would also be a good idea.

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

The WIN 7 Disk was also a burned disk from the same burner so that increased my confusion... I am going to keep running more tests on the E5410 and an E6400 as a cross reference plus run some diagnostics

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

Well to start I ran a barrage of CD/DVD tests on the e5410 and they passed 100% error free... I also ran HRS of drive tests and smart seems to be fine but I do have the new Momentus XT in this so I will swap it and run a few tests BUT get a load of this:

http://www.delltechcenter.com/thread/39 … Results=20

It seems that their is a known problem with these new Latitudes and this thread describes the damn probably exactly even though they reference the e6410 and mine is the e5410.

EDIT:

After reading the above I decided to create a new Misc driver pack with no Free Fall or Accelerator and try that.... it failed.
I took the Momentus XT hard drive out and put it in an E6400 and ran the same new install CD and it runs fine. I am at a loss here and ready to take a break... I am thinking of trying just the dell Mass Storage in a custom pack along with the Chipset to see if I can get this damn thing to boot and start an XP install... if that fails I just might be forced to WIN7 on this laptop and cut my losses... but damn I hate not being able to figure this out sad ...any ideas would be welcome

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

I created a single I4 Mass Storage and a new Chipset pack, tried those and still no good...

EDIT:
Modified the ini file and now the system loads all the files but when 1st boot occurs it blue screens... I really would have thought the single driver pack would have done the trick. I will upload the pack and maybe you can see if I am doing something wrong.

I uploaded the pack to Nightlies/NT5/DP_MassStorage_wnt5_x86-32_100709I.7z please let me know if this is correct and should be working

No ideas???

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

You got me.  Looks fine from here.  Are you sure you don't have any previous dpms slipped in your source and you've deleted the QSC directory...right?
Do previous versions of dpms work on this system?
It's always possible that new driver just won't work on the new system.

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

I will try some older versions but I even downloaded a new driverpack base when I started from scratch... I am on my way out to get a USB floppy so I can test the drivers with a regular F6... needless to say this is driving me NUTS

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

Well I have to admit this is the one that is going to beat me... I just downloaded a new e-Open XP Pro SP3 and burned it to a CD, I then connected a USB floppy the the E5410 and rebooted with the new CD... prior to this I rechecked all the BIOS settings and and made sure AHCI was set. The CD will not continue to boot after it flashes "inspecting computer" ...it just hangs.

I change AHCI to ATA and it installs fine.... WTF!!!!! Shouldn't it just boot from the CD and ask for an F6? I can't make any sense of this. I have run CD diagnostics with the AHCI setting and they all pass 100%

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

I hope I'm not boring everyone with my posts since I do it as much to seek help as I do to help others... anyway:

I just tried the exact same untouched MS XPSP3 Cd on a E6400 and a D630, each with AHCI defaults, and both laptops continue to boot properly throughout the install process. Unless I hear different from others the E5410 should also and I simply can't understand why it doesn't... based on that I will be placing a service call to Dell and insist that this laptop boot from an XP CD or I will return or exchange it. I have probably spent 5 days playing with this stupid laptop and that really ticks me off now.

I will continue to report back

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

Please continue your reports!
You are correct in your assumptions.  If a device doesn't have a driver on the CD, setup should continue and you just won't see the drive from setup.  But, if there's an incompatible driver that is trying to match the HWID, then that could cause a BSOD.
I've read through some of the info in the Dell post and I agree that something is sitting on the ACPI bus that is causing the problem, not necessarily the Mass Storage drivers.
Did you try changing the hard drive to a different brand?

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

OK I spent another day trying to work through this and it got stranger. I installed a Hitachi 160G 7200RPM drive and using the same disk I had created with no FF Sensor the system installed perfectly 3 times in a row. I then replaced the Momentus and I couldn't believe it but it started the install and actually completed. But after it rebooted I continued to get intermittent hard drive read errors. When I tried to re-install it continued to fail again. I called Dell and Seagate and they both agreed that they wanted me to RMA the drive and try that. After explaining to Seagate that the drive passes the diagnostics and a Zero Fill made no difference they said it sounded like a bad drive.

Re: [bug] HM55 I5 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29

I am not supprized to read that you had problems with a seagate drive.

I experienced a lot of special bugs with Seagate drives in my shop.

Hope you will get a new and good drive from them.

Have a nice day.
