Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

The new machine does have a burner, it's the old machine that doesn't. The laptop is completely seperate, I only brought this in to test the slipstreamed DVD on another machine. Emulator - I was thinking the same thing. smile May have something to do with Alcohol software?

Cheers

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

alcohol does have an ODD emulator... that would be it...

I create my images and test them in vmware... you could use virtual box or other VM software if you like...

I would have created the image on the "new" machine.
I would have tested it with VirtualBox or VMWare before burning.
burn after test load on VM passes... (you could test the burned DVD in the VM too if you like)
Then test on live metal... old machine or laptop or...

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

*****Update*****

I've opened the case and 'thumbed' the drive cables and vacuumed the innards. I think I found out why the old machine was refusing to boot from CD/DVD, I didn't save the boot order settings before exiting the BIOS setup. Following your suggestion above , I decided to create another slipstreamed disc from scratch on the new machine. Also the old machine is refusing to play with the existing slipstreamed disc. As it is a DVD+RW, I thought maybe somthings been written to it during the previous install procedures and it's corrupt. This time I ticked the 'Textmode' box and noticed that some of the driverpacks had been updated, so I downloaded those as well. Having created an image on my HDD I noticed that the size of it was significanty smaller than the previous image I created, approx. one third smaller, is this something to do with Textmode???

I loaded up 'Sun VirtualBox' and removed the previous emulator I had set up, as well as deleting the virtual HDD I had previously setup. I then set up the new slipstreamed ISO image and started it, all looked well until Windows setup told me that the activation key I'd entered for XP, earlier in Nlite wasn't valid!??? yikes Another problem to compound the existing one/s! If knew how to put the emoticon for banging your head against a wall, it would be here. Any idea why this would be happening???

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Well if you are installing with sp3 you do not need to provide a key at all to install...
you validate after the install...

with sp2 or earlier there are lots of variables... OEM, retail, MSDN, VAR, Corp, ect... plus there were multiple encodings. (not all keys will work with all discs)

Make sure you have slipstreamed sp3 to avoid many issues with your key being accepted.
And be sure you have the same version of windows that your key is for - retail key requires retail disc

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

I created the new slipstreamed disc with Nlite using the OEM Windows XP SP1 disc that came with the computer and XP SP3 downloaded from the web. I included the serial key in the 'unattended' part of Nlite. The serial key, I got from the sticker stuck to the old machine, so it must be genuine. I was thinking, maybe because I already created a virtual machine in VirtualBox using the same key earlier, maybe this could have something to do with it? But I deleted the virtual machine and HDD, so I don't understand why the key isn't being accepted? Should I try removing and reinstalling VirtualBox???

Thanx

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

if it is the disc that came with the PC then the key should be accepted... double check you did not fat finger it..

I tried it several times now and it's still not being accepted? Can't understand why?

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

I realise that my problem has gone a little 'off topic' now, but would be very grateful for any suggestions or perhaps someone can signpost me to another forum that might be of help?

Many thanks

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Hello! Back after a little hiatus. First I created a third slipstreamed disc with the latest drivers, again with textmode selected. Whilst the slipstream was being created, I noticed that in the progress box there were some interesting messages, I'll give you the first two lines (I can post more later if significant):

<Prep>\I386\winnt.org was not found, \I386\winnt.sif was not restored
<Prep>\Neither txtsetup.org or dosnet.org was found

Aldo the size of the resultant ISO was much the same as the first one I produced, ie, around 1GB (the second was a third less at around 600MB). Any ideas why this might be??? I've been looking into why the product key was been refused. It seems it's a common problem, as Googling the problem throws links from multiple sources, one of them being from Microsoft which might be useful to others with same problem, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310637. I tried the first four suggestions in this article to no avail. I then tried the following:

* removing the other two ISO's I'd created earlier, reasoning that because I'd got the first one working in a VM earlier (the product key was accepted), I might not be allowed to register the the same XP with the same product key again in another VM set up on the same machine? Hope that makes sense. Product key invalid

* installing in the VM via the OEM XP disc. THIS WORKED!!!

* trying the VM and ISO on another computer. Product key invalid

* tried the ISO using a different VM, ie, MS Virtual PC 2007. Didn't work. Didn't even get as far as entering the product key, the installation kept stalling just after Windows complained that it was low on Virtual Memory (it automatically increased the page file size itself). Each time the VM wasn't responding I left it for a good while until the only way of getting any responce was to shut the machine down by keeping my finger on the power button. btw, the stall occured whilst the drivers were being decompressed?

The only instances where I managed to get the VM working were:

1. creating the slipstreamed disc on the machine that I wanted to do the reinstall on (earlier you suggested I create the slipstream on the new machine, so I assumed it didn't make any difference which machine it was created on) and without the text mode option selected

2. installing using the OEM disc.

Is it safe to conclude that the problem must be something to do with the slipstreamed disc, ie, the drivers and/or their implementation?

Thanks for your time. smile

Indicates that your source is corrupted... Start with a clean source wink

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

By clean source, do you mean a different XP install disc?

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

I mean that DriverPacks has been run on that source before... but the backup files have been removed... DriverPacks BASE can no longer uninstall itself from that source. that means it is HOSED! It has orphaned files and corrupted files and missing files... (IE It is corrupted)

you need to copy your OEM XP disc to your HDD and start CLEAN / OVER...

The source you used (the one the log entries shown came from) Is no longer any good.
Where did you get that source? ( Hint... The correct answer is I recopied my hologramed disc to the HDD)

"I mean that DriverPacks has been run on that source before... but the backup files have been removed... DriverPacks BASE can no longer uninstall itself from that source. that means it is HOSED! It has orphaned files and corrupted files and missing files... (IE It is corrupted)"

Sorry, do I need to dl the DriverPacks and DriverPacks Base again then?

"you need to copy your OEM XP disc to your HDD and start CLEAN / OVER... "

This happens during Nlite process. Is that ok?

The XP install disc is the OEM disc that came with the machine (I've been using this throughout).

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

no need to redownload DriverPacks...

We have not had any reports of issues with the nLite copy
(notice small n Capital L nLite this is not one of my many typos lol)

you MUST run DriverPacks last... You can make no, zero, none, zip, nada changes after DriverPacks...
If you do make changes after DriverPacks then you will not be able to run DriverPacks again on that source, ever...

DriverPacks MUST BE THE LAST CHANGE TO YOUR SOURCE!!!
Hint... DriverPacks can be uninstalled if neccessary (see: must be last change made), but for me it is easier to just start over wink

PS it is possable that the source is not hosed...
certain conditions can generate those errors without issue...
Since you did not submit the entire log all i have to go in is the two error lines...
which are translated into corrupted when i view them by themselves without the remainder of the log...

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

"Hint... The correct answer is I recopied my hologramed disc to the HDD"

Each time I created a new slipstreamed disc I followed the guide mentioned earlier on in my postings, ie, http://www.v3.co.uk/computeractive/feat … er-4007804. Each time I did this I specifically followed this section,

"...start by installing Nlite. Leave the default options as they are and after clicking Finish, the program will automatically launch.

After clicking Next at the welcome screen, you’ll be prompted to locate your existing installation files. Pop your XP installation disc into the drive, exit any welcome screen that may pop up, then click Browse to select your CD or DVD drive.

Nlite will prompt you to select or create a folder to save the modified files to: click OK, choose a folder on the hard disk and click OK again. Make sure the selected disk has enough free space available if you’re not integrating drivers, then 1GB should be ample; double this amount if you are.

Wait while the files are copied from the XP disc to the hard disk. Once complete, the existing installation (Windows XP, XP SP1 or XP SP2) will be identified. Click Next twice to arrive at the main menu screen, which is where you select the parts of Nlite you want."

So, I think that the 'source' that you mention was created new each time. I deleted the old one from my HDD.

"you MUST run DriverPacks last... You can make no, zero, none, zip, nada changes after DriverPacks"

I followed the guide to the letter and apart from actually creating the ISO, which I did with nLite after running DriverPacks (as directed by the guide), DriverPacks was run last? Is this correct? I'm still flummoxed?

" Since you did not submit the entire log all i have to go in is the two error lines... "

I wrote down the log 'on-the-fly' whilst it was being produced. I don't know how to reproduce it? There were some more lines, but I only copied the ones that looked negative? Here they are in their entirity:

"<Prep>\I386\winnt.org was not found, \I386\winnt.sif was not restored
<Prep>\Neither txtsetup.org or dosnet.org was found
The removal of any service packs we may have added with DriverPacks and or removal of mass storage textmode drivers was skipped
<Prep>Verified method 2 references dont exist in txtsetup.sif or dosnet.inf
<Prep>Cleanedup\$OEM$\cmdlines.txt..."

The following lines of the log began with '<Slip>' I think?

Thanks again smile

it looks like you ware doing exactly the right steps... however without your complete log i cannot determine the nature of the error.
those lines are generated for several different things that are narrowed down by the missing info... waht packs, versions, which mode, what was selected to where and onto what... blah blah blah...

so the log is in the same folder as DriverPacks BASE... and is named DPs_BASE.log

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

OK the report is because nLite is creating $OEM$\cmdlines.txt. this causes base to do extended checking to see if it was previously installed.

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

What do I do next???

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

notice your post was updated with code tags (you can "edit" it and see how that is done")

Your image is done correctly... Try this. Don't put a PID (Product ID) in with nLite... When you get to the login use WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) to register your windows wink

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

"OK the report is because nLite is creating $OEM$\cmdlines.txt. this causes base to do extended checking to see if it was previously installed."

Do I need to somehow stop nLite creating $OEM$\cmdlines.txt? Is base checking to see if 'itself' has been installed previously or Windows XP. Do I need to re-download DriverPacksBase (as it's possibly checking to see if it has been installed previously) and the DriverPacks again? Am I right in saying that WGA will already be installed on my machine? Sorry about all the questions.

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

you don't need to reinstall anything... or redownload anything... the messages are warnings that can be IGNORED in your situation...

THERE ARE NOT ANY PROBLEMS WITH YOUR SOURCE.

just remove the PID and test...

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Hi there! I've created a slipstreamed disc again, this time not entereing the PID in nLite. I tried running the resultant image in the VM and it still refuses to accept the PID. Not sure how to use WGA to register? Windows insists I enter a PID during the install? Here's a copy of the logfile that was created:

Re: dac960nt.sys is corrupted - error message?

Any ideas??? Like I said above installing in the VM via the OEM XP disc WORKS!!! (allow the PID), so I can only conclude that the slipstream process is causing the problems. I appreciate that I may be 'off topic' but I am determined to get this working???
