Topic: Not working in Hyper-V virtual machine

I am having a problem doing a XP Pro Enterprise x86 install with the driver packs.  I know that the drivers packs on not needed for a virtual machine, but I am working on an image to deploy to several machines.  here are some of the details.  If you need any more info, please just let me know.  I know that this something to do with the combination of Hyper-V and Drivers packs.

XP source is Original Microsoft SP3 disk.

I am using the latest DP - redownloaded this week. Method 2, keeping drivers.

Nlite used to create iso, but no other changes.

The install hangs just after going to GUI portion at "37 Minutes remaining" in install.  The system just hangs.  I left it for over a day.

The same ISO works in actual computers and in VMware Workstation free trial.

Creating an ISO from the raw XP source files works fine in Hyper-V.

I have restarted the entire process twice, but I get the exact same results each time.

Any help, even just shots in the dark to try would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Ryan

Re: Not working in Hyper-V virtual machine

HWIDS?
Sounds like a driver hanging.  Check your setup*.log files.
I thought Hyper-V was only with W2k3 server with that feature, not XP.

I'm confused, is this a problem in live metal, or only VM?

Re: Not working in Hyper-V virtual machine

The problem only happens in Hyper-V VM.  On real hardware everything is fine.  If works fine in VMware Workstaion VM also.

Details on Hyper-V

Windows 2008 Server (SP1) running Hyper-V virtualization.  The VM has 512MB Ram and 60GB Hard drive.

After looking around a few other places, some people think that the Driver Packs could have a driver for the emulated NIC that is not compatable with Hyper-V.  this is just an off the wall theory and i do not know any way to verify.

Where are the setup*.log files located at?

Thank you,

Ryan

%systemroot% (ie. C:\Windows\ )
They're named setupact.log (huge), setupapi.log, setuperr.log (should be empty), setuplog.txt (also large).
They'll give you insight where the problem was during setup.

Re: Not working in Hyper-V virtual machine

I have restored a previous Checkpoint, so I will try to reinstall this afternoon and check the logs and post back.

Thank you,

Re: Not working in Hyper-V virtual machine

Hyper V and VM server are different beast?
Far as I know, Hyper-V runs in real x64 metal, or in x64 host, and I thought Hyper-V aware server (metal level) cannot run as full fledged 64 bit aware guest in in X32 host.

faik, x64 VM has to run in X64 Metal OS, as well.
I am not going to buy me 5000 dollar worth of Hardware to again test what I was told/tried over 10 months ago.

I am all ears, tho.
If I am wrong, I am wrong.

Reason for edit, VM X64 guest (-in 64.-)

(extra edit, far as I know, Hyper V in 32 bit is not ever allowed to metal level.)

The answer was 42?
Kind regards, Jaak.

Re: Not working in Hyper-V virtual machine

I'm sorry it has taken so long to get back to this.  I was tied up on other projects.  One additional thing I tried was removing some of the driver packs.  No matter what combination i use, (Including just audio drivers only) I stop at the same place.

This is from my setupapi.log file.  It is the only one with an error.  Let me know if you want to see the other logs.

Thank you!

Ryan
