Hello everybody.

I've reinstalled Windows XP, via a m2-slipstreamed distro (latest official driverpacks).

In the device manager, there is only one yellow mark: "PCI Simple Communications Controller."

I was wondering whether I should install the driver for it, and what would the effect be.
http://www.soft32.com/Download/Free/PCI … 376-1.html

For example, I plan on buying a PCI graphics card for this computer. Would installing that driver help me?

Here are my HWIDs:

what if the only copied folder is i386, what would then happen?

is the operating system identification really that crucial to the well being of the distro?

curiously,
twipley

Hello everybody (especially OverFlow!). When I slipstream driverpacks, do I need to copy the whole "Windows" directory, as it is written in the FAQ, or just the "I386" folder, to the hard disk drive? In other words, is the latter the only directory that gets modified by BASE, or are there more than this one that get modified?

Thanks!|
twipley

But updating driverpacks works as good, provided the driverpacks slipstream was the last thing made to the iso?

And by the way, I was talking about adding the fact that "selecting no driverpacks has for effect of unslipstreaming them" to the FAQ, but if you want to add more to it, more's for sure the better! :)

OverFlow, do you think that info (i.e. selecting no packs having as an effect of unslipstreaming previously slipstreamed driverpacks) should be added to this sticky BASE FAQ? http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=1503

Since you seem confident about the tool's function (and that nothing special have been tweaked after the slipstream), I will then go for that normal slipstream, where most recent driverpacks (such as graphics A and B) are automatically updated over obsolete ones.

It is also good to know that selecting no packs has for effect of uninstalling driverpacks.

farewell,
twipley

Hello back, everybody.

From reading http://forum.driverpacks.net/viewtopic.php?id=1503, and seeing the old date, I wanted to ensure that the recorded information still applies to current driverpacks and base tool. So for example, if I update driverpacks GB from 8.12 to 9.06 by slipstreaming again over i386 (http://driverpacks.net/driverpacks/wind … ics-b/9.06), the obsolete folders are supposed to be deleted and the inf files to be migrated automatically?

Is that procedure recommended, or would it be safer to begin again with a "virgin" i386 folder instead of just slipstreaming newest GA & GB versions, so that those two get updated while all the other already slipstreamed driverpacks remain intact?

Sorry for all the doubts, but I just wanted to get extra confirmation for stressed people like myself, if possible. :shy:

overflow you're right. it seems critical updates will be available until 2014. http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/?p=2 … =printable

but wouldn't internet browsing still be safe, using secure browser? i've always wondered what's the point in critical updates anyway, as my browser seems safe as it it. p.s. i don't use java. maybe i've got my finger in the eye?

p.s. mr_smartepants, you've made a good point bringing in the activation issue. but, for the purposes of the discussion, perhaps we could assume the windows copy to be preactivated? that would bring to the ultimate question: how long would such a preactivated xp really last?

(1) until extended support ends (when ms coffee patchers become bored)
(2) until nvidia stop supporting xp (when driver programmers run out of coffee)
(3) would last forever (so we can all continue to work with our coffee-driven bodies)

given ongoing production of newer windows releases by the microsoft crew, i've been left wondering how long will driver programmers continue to support the xp platform. i've been militating for some time telling people xp may already be meeting their needs, plus i like the idea of an universal os installable to all existing machines (of the decade). but the day driver programmers will decide to end support for xp, this idea will fall to the water, and will stay there, forever.

what do you think? please cite your sources, etc.

@overflow: you're right on both guesses, file not found because it didn't exist, and sad disc was done with m2. do you think that the fact that this file didn't exist was a factor in the failure to install drivers via sad disc or jaws tool?

EDIT: i now support your claim that slipstreaming drivers via m2 is best method to work with driverpacks. having just done so. imagine my face, the typical "yay, computer problems at last solved!," kind of reaction.

best for you,
twipley

@mr_smartepants: i don't think so, as at one point i've also tried with b and c ;)

@mr_smartepants: lol, that kind of sums it up.
@overflow: alright man, timing it and will report back.

edit: sorry, as i've said in another thread, i'm now with m2 now, so probably will never have the chance to test this again. that being said, i'd recommend everyone to listen to what jeff has said to me: "slipstreaming the drivers VIA m2 continues to be the best method to add DriverPacks."

hello mr_smartepants. i've tested back removing the /sa switch (using graphics 'a' only this time), but the yellow mark is still there. anyways, the yellow mark doesn't really bother me. what does is that for some reason graphics lags when windows are dragged or text is scrolled, and that the sound is not even present in the tray bar, and when accessed from the control panel all the options are grayed out. weird thing is while sound and graphics did not install correctly, other drivers, such as ethernet, seem to have installed well (as you can see, my internet it working :)).

plus, the blue sad window says it cannot find file nor path:
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2332/dpsdc7.png

thanks mr who is smart in his pants

hello everybody. i've noticed in a sad disc the dpinst progress window starts minimized. is it just me, or minimized=100knots, maximized=20knots, maximizedfull=80knots?

in other words, when the window is maximized, it seems to go four times faster when in fullscreen mode (alt-enter) than when maximized to normal size. and i suppose minimized should go as fast or even faster than fullscreen maximized.

is it just the scrolling going faster in fullscreen mode, or the overall progress going faster?

hi all. i've got two ibm thinkpads over here, and tried to install driverpacks after having installed windows (with sad folder created by base 8.12.4). drivers such as sound, chipset, and graphics didn't install properly (sound tray icon is not there, standby mode is unavailable, and while dragging windows or scrolling text, it all goes very slow).

here all the two HWID text files, and base log and ini:
http://www.2shared.com/file/4887540/fcf … kpads.html

if you need something i've not included, or some extra info, feel free to ask. i know the hardware of both these thinkpads are pretty similar to each other, but they are not exactly the same. plus, in device manager, there is a yellow mark in the display adapter section, but not in the sound section.

thanks for looking into it. please forgive if i've forgotten something.

argh! too bad. I kinda liked that "SAD makes you happy." :)

no problemo, bro!

As I've said in the other thread, things have been going fine for me, and for your information the entries in the ARP page are not the arranged the same way as they are when you install via jaws/snow. BASE seems to do things differently.

By example, I now have clear, separate entries for "Creative Audio Console" and "NVIDIA Drivers." Thanks again! smile

God, it's good to have drivers working once and for all.

I've tried with BASE (nice program, btw), and driver installation successfully worked. That's good for me! smile

OverFlow, thanks for the suggestion, I'll try to BASE it and report back on the other thread. smile

nope.

Is it normal that removing a driver via add/remove programs does appear to just remove the entry, but not the driver itself? because I've just removed my graphics card driver and the resolution still remains after a reboot, plus I've tested and I'd be able to play requiring games.

By the way, I've installed using jaws, so I'm not exactly sure if the entries are put in the same way as if with base, but what I've done is taken a picture of the add/remove programs page so you know if what I'm talking about is the same thing that you're talking about: http://img126.imageshack.us/my.php?imag … rt3gf5.jpg

I don't know if I've got the knowledge to do that -- except reseating the hardware, of course!

In the meanwhile, I've tested installing with different Windows XP versions -- all worked fine, except driverpacks (snow/jaws).

I've also tested on VMWare! as you may already know, VMWare installs with the same CPU as the host, so I've just ran the CPU driverpack inside the guest using snow/jaws, but the same error happened! wow.

When I get some extra time, I'll try to reformat and see if drivers install well (this time, without driverpacks). Well, if that's the case I'll just have to stop using driverpacks for some time, but h*ll I can always recommend them to friends! :)

I've subscribed to this topic so if somebody write something here in the future I should be informed. Also, if I ever open my PC case and add/remove some piece of hardware that makes it working, I'll be sure to report it back here

thanks for the help people, it almost did it!

if you mean by that resetting the BIOS, it's already done.
