by "ini" file, I'm referring to the DriverPacks_MassStorage_wnt5_x86_32.ini that comes with the 1006 update.
I'm assuming that if the HWID's aren't in there, then they haven't been included.

with a 0x00000007b error for Windows XP SP3 using driverpacks 1006 mass storage (google tells me this a storage error, controller not found )

The specific jmicron HWIDS 197b:2363 are absent from the ini file as well as the ATI smbus HWID's 1002:4385.
not sure if a new driver required or if the old ones just don't have the HWID's included.
I have the bios configured for native ide rather than raid or AHCI.
Any thoughts? I'd hate to have to move to Windows 7. yuch.
