Had i read my emails first yesterday I would have known you had the same idea i had before i responded here wink

In your email it was much more clear that we were thinking the same thing big_smile.

Agreed!

input on wording of the feature / checkbox description?

There are many situations where it is desirable to not select textmode Mass Storage drivers.

A user may have integrated their text mode drivers using some other method like nLite for one quick example.

Another example might be if the user had no need for them (all their machines use IDE HDDs)

It's also possible that a user has made custom changes to txtsetup.sif and or dosnet.inf that might get corrupted.

Not selecting textmode has a side benefit of cutting the run time of DriverPacks BASE by about 70%. (cuts a 7 min run time down to about 1 minute) Note: If QSC is enabled then every run after the first one will be about 20% faster when textmode is enabled. 7 min first run, 5 min every run afterward. Why?  The process of extracting and making .cab files from the original mass storage drivers won't have to be done again, they are now "cached". More... Mass storage drivers must be compressed using Microsoft's compression method (driver.sys compresses to driver.sy_) to make them work properly.

This option is also particularly useful for me personally. testing takes much less time when i can run the program in one minute instead of 5, this really speeds up my ability to develop and test new DriverPacks BASE features or bug fixes.

Although DriverPacks BASE is absolutely easy enough for a novice to use, it was and still is designed and intended for advanced level users. Removing (advanced) functionality that many of our users depend on would not be a move in a positive direction.

I am certainly open to suggestions on making this more user friendly!
However I cannot remove important features many people depend on wink.

Your suggestion to add a description of what it is for is definitely an an outstanding idea!
I also had grown your idea a little... My thought was to automatically select the Textmode check box when the mass storage pack check box is selected. In this way it would lead a reasonable person to believe the two things should go together. Do you have more input on how I might make it more friendly? Perhaps help me with the specific wording of the check boxes description? I was thinking something like "This option will eliminate the need for F6 floppy drivers" or "Select to Prevent 'No Hard Drive found' errors"

Thanks Carey, your feedback helps make DriverPacks better for everyone!

the settings are saved (or overwritten) when you hit slipstream.

You may copy the INI as a backup.
You can use the "Export Settings" button on the "Overview Page" also.

You can load a saved settings file on the "Start Page" with the  " Load settings file... 'BROWSE' " button.

That seems simple enough to me smile... do you have a suggestion / alternative? or did you just need to vent wink.

You are awesome! good call cdob... that puts me back on track to get this fixed!

I had a great time last night! Thanks again Carey!

the saved convo is here - Interview starts at the nine minute mark...

this link is only good for two weeks, Well get an edited version up soon!

M1 is a very old section of DriverPacks BASE... it was all but abandoned several years ago wink

try creating a M1 SAD source with only CPU pack...
then extract all the drivers to the properly created folder structure.
That may work

Dpinst.exe does not do as good of a job as windows setup the prefered method of using DriverPacks is slipstreamed with M2 for best results.

if you have no drivers installed it may take several passes with reboots in between to be successful. IE if chipset is not installed it must first be installed then the machine rebooted and the remaining drivers that are dependent on chipset may be installed... Some drivers will not install at all with DPinst.exe...

the main usefulness of SAD is to update drivers on a fully running machine... not to do an initial installation of them. This may work some of the time.

Again to get the best results use BASE to slipstream the DriverPacks with M2. wink

More... DPInst.exe is a Microsoft provided Redistributable file and as such we can not "fix" it if it does not work properly wink tongue.

Even more... some of these drivers may have failed do to the M1 Cabbing that is done... By extracting them rather than Cabbing them with M1 you can prove if it is a cabbing issue or a DPINST issue.

Thanks for your feedback  and welcome to DriverPacks!

did you read my last post ? ? ?

I shot you an email about an hour ago with my contact info.

Wim has invited me to participate on behalf of the project.

If you will reply to that email (from Jeff at AdaptivePC) I will gladly and eagerly call you to for more details!!!

He has been willing to go a little more in depth with me VIA email / PM wink. So that is not a show stopper big_smile.

RE the USB dongle...
try putting the drivers on the disk image.
Say at %SystemRoot%\MyDrivers\USB
Then add the path to the windows registry "DevicePath"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DevicePath
IE update the value to  "%SystemRoot%\Inf;%SystemRoot%\MyDrivers\USB"

for a normal install with DriverPacks BASE this method is referred to as "KTD" and will work with certain drivers like a USB dongle or an external modem, monitor etc. It is likely to fail at higher level drivers like sound and graphics wink. It also has a path limit that can be exceeded if you are to greedy tongue.

OK! We discussed it... Wim Leers did in fact differ to me.

He pointed out that an international call or skype could be "flaky" and may not result in the best quality for broadcast. He also reminded me that English is not his first language. Since most / all of our communication is in written form I sometimes forget that he is multilingual and that English is just one of his many Tertiary languages wink. Since my primary language is US English and I'm located in the US that might make things smoother and easier wink.

The entire team is very excited about video tutorial featuring our project, and your gracious offer to interview us!

Please contact me to make arrangements! I'll shoot you an email so you have all my contact info!

that is strange i reverted the driver in I3 (the one your machine should have used) back to the one it was in 901

I will do it if Wim Leers (Project developer, Site owner, and original concept... Our illustrious leader!) does not have time, or if he would just like me to do so. mr_smartepants (Erik) may also be interested, again if Wim is too busy or differs to the team.

Wim is in Belgium, and Erik is stationed (USAF) in England, (Both are about 5 hours ahead of us) so your live show would be very early in the AM for them (3AM-5AM). Since I am located in Cincinnati I'm probably the most logical / likely choice. We will see what Wim thinks is best!

I'll move the post / thread to this forum so you may edit it!

Thanks for your awesome contribution to our project sir!!

you may be able to tweak your image so that after install setup is not neccesary...

Try installing the drivers on the machine that has an issue in sysprep "audit" mode smile.
In this way the drivers will be "pre-installed" and ready to go.
you may be able to pre-install in "audit mode" all of your problem devices and save yourself some grief wink.

RE: As i wrote
Um, no. You never mentioned sysprep or imaging. At all.

You also did not state why a reboot is out of the question.

re: manipulating drivers with devcon...
If you think dpinst is slow and ineffective then you are in for a huge surprize if you try devcon, it is much much worse.

RE Which class/driver is it e.g.? (ATI?)
I don't have a list... and i don't specifically remember (use the forums search feature)
we have had three or four drivers reported over the last two years.
We have millions of users with hundreds of millions of PCs.
the odds of you finding one of them yourself is hundreds of millions to one. wink the point is to be aware of it.

all of these tools all depend on DPINST.EXE... including SAD
all of these tools will take a similar amount of time.

You may be able to increase the speed of the install if you create a SAD M1 folder structure with only CPU pack and then simply extract the graphics packs (or just the drivers you need) to the properly created folder structure. at least that way you would not have to wait for extraction and if you reduce the total number of drivers (remove the ones you know you won't use) that will also help. If you use SAD you can customize the switches wink.

whether or not a reboot is required is dependent on the driver NOT on the install method.
if you need this then you will need to find drivers that do not require a reboot... this may not be possable with some drivers / devices.

Why do you need this? just reboot and call it a day...
What are you trying to do?

DPINST is the only (viable) choice for post install of drivers in an unattended fashion.
That is why all the tools use it, including ours.

DPINST does not work with all drivers (yes there are some bugs) but unless microsoft fixes it there is nothing we can do.

re: acceleration without restart... again what are you tring to do? Why is a reboot unacceptable? are you doing an installation of some sort? if so why not include the drivers with the install?

They are all good... SAD is the only one DriverPacks supports.
each if the others are supported by their own developers.
Some of them are active on DriverPacks like Kickarse with driverforge
Others like WarmSnow have been absent for some time.

If you will be needing support then start with SAD.
Our Stand Alone Drivers (SAD) platform is a script (batch file) and can be easily customized by you.
or one of KickArse apps (he just posted a new one today 'drivergeek')

noted and stickied

I am curious why you tell people to NOT select the text mode mass storage drivers?

If you do not select text mode mass storage then the created Disc will not be able to find any SATA or other non MS supported HDDs and I thought that was one of the things you wanted people to be able to do...
I believe this is an error / mistake in your tutorial?

Jeff

Thank you!

this has been reported before.... hmmm check the older posts to see if it was resolved or is still open

I see anomolies with dpinst.exe from time to time
(dpinst.exe a redistributable file provided by Microsoft is the engine for SAD)
No good reason for them, but they do exist ;P
