I have esata cables, they will not yield a different result than a regular cable. they simply have a clip to keep it from easily being pulled out. the wiring is the same.

Hot swap is a setting in either the firmware or in the software. and should present itself regardless of the physical cable.

(hang a drive on a regular cable direct to the MB, unplug as needed big_smile.

um... you can't compress all those files. I can dig up the list out of DriverPacks BASE code to tell which ones i know for sure should not be cabbed.

known exceptions

"_",  "AX", "VP", "CAB", "CAT", "CMD", "INF", "INI", "EXE"

we decided to skin this cat the other way, we cabbed all files except...
the exception list is shorter and easier to maintain, or it was.

If Rick thinks it's a good idea you must be onto something big_smile!

JAAK!  Long time no see dude. Welcome home.

any chance you are going to have some time for us?

just try a driver you know you can test first (you have driver and device in hand).

manually cab that driver and test to see if it even works before investing more time in it big_smile.

Let us know how that works. I must warn you that some of the newer video drivers will not appreciate this.  and they are some of the biggest drivers.

given the size and price and speed of current media and networking, cab compressing files became unneeded. This is the first time this topic has come up for any NT6 OS.

ten years ago a few hundred meg would make the difference of fitting on a 700MB disc.
Or bog down a 10 Mb switch.

You could emulate the DriverPacks BASE method one the way you suggest, and i don't know if it will work for sure but it should.

Why do you wish to do this, i can't imagine?

It looks like i am going to have some free time this winter.

If this is true i will have time for coding this with an updated finisher, perhaps even as a single executable. SAD and finisher in one.

Bad for my finances but good for the project big_smile.

OverFlow, stability is really great, but absolutely outdated packages make your driverpacks almost useless. A Year and sometimes more has gone since you updated driverpacks. And i do not understand this competition between you and Russian project.

there is no competition. They have an open invite to join forces with us. The more man power we have the faster we release. all they have to do is the same thing they are doing, in colaboration with us.

one of the russians used to be here everyday. Samlab would post his packs on the russian site and submit his changes here for us. Sometimes he would release our test packs on the russian site and we could get more feedback for our release. It was a Win Win for everyone. He got  his releases out fast and we got to test and release quickly, especially with his feedback from the russian release. IDK where he went or why.

Seems easy, obvious, and mutually beneficial.

So you tell me why they choose to compete rather than join forces?
our door remains open

Jeff

Thanks for the update sir... looks like the betas may have broken something for PE.

Does normal DriverPacks BASE integrated install of the beta DriverPack MassStorage work when deploying from an ODD on that hardware?

How is this deployed, Network, Disc, Thumb.
Are we talking about the normal PE stage of XP install?

we tried at one point to get them to join forces with us so we could turn out packs faster.

the main difference was we prefer a pinch of quality control. All our packs are beta tested, tweaked, pre-release tested, and must have all positive feedback before release. They add and release and deal with issues after the fact.

mr_smartepants and i both agree that stability is more important than a version number.
you will rarely if ever have an issue with our release versions.

All of their packs were ours, or modified versions of ours. I haven't checked in a while they may have a few that are actually unique. They never were in the past.

PM Wim about this... there should be some help here already, he tried to get me into Python at one time.

I am not sure Dude

I have added you to the testing team.
You will find that several forums are no longer hidden from you!

Thanks again

Jeff

Thanks for the update with the solution.

That is excellent!

We are here and working... Back in the day we had a programmer and three or four people working on the packs, twenty daily testers. Now we have one and a half guys working on the packs, and a handful of testers.

More team means faster turn arounds... simple. We are here and working, they will all get updates big_smile. Know anybody with some free time and an open mind?

follow the link to http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php? … p;p=172598

there will be much info on how to do this and the support team that is most familiar with it.

cdob may pop in here. He does that from time to time. but more likely over there.

PS in your original post you confused UBCD with UBCD4Win which are two seperate and unrelated projects big_smile.

that cdob post is interesting...  It got me thinking

He loaded it as a busdriver ... i bet that gets rid of most of the extranious entries if done that way.

mark the USB drivers as "busExtenders" (especially if they really are)

Q:What does the entry "ms_1_isBusExtender" mean?
A:The "ms_1_isBusExtender" entry specifies wether the driver is a bus extender or not.
Q:How can I find out if my driver is a bus extender?
A:Open the .inf files which should be included in the driver. Look for a line similar to the following:
LoadOrderGroup = System Bus Extender
If that line is present then your driver is a busextender.

OF course i will still have to deal with the wdf coinstaller thing... for now we can make people slipstream the hotfix with RVMI or whatever.

thanks guys.  you can see more on my FaceBook page if you like. (Jeff Herre in Cincinnati) I wrote a tribute to her.

yep, we also have the PnP=5 debacle to deal with.

i think both require a HIV file edit, a subroutine that does not currently exist in BASE.

I REALLY need to find some sit down time and do these items.

Related but off topic...
Today "Sammie" the family dog of 14 years passed away in her sleep in my office at our feet ten minutes before we were to leave for her last visit to the vet. her health detiriorated rapidly over the last two months since the development of a tumor on the outside of her lower jaw.  Tori my 20 YO daughter is 1000 miles away working for Walt Disney and could not be here to see her off. Sammie was a good girl and we miss her.

if you skip them for 2k xp and 2k3 is almost the same as setting ms count to 0

PE drivers should not have XP skipped unless they are not to be installed ever for xp... (very rare)
all pe drivers should be skipped for 2k (not that it matters since there are no PE builds using 2K)
2k3 based on if it is supported by the driver. (most are)

Most of these sections will only have skip = 2K  (

always use mscount 0 to disable a driver big_smile

good thinking above, well done

PM cdob... or Highlander tongue if questions are in need of answer

yes TD seems like we just did this didn't we big_smile

i keep hoping to grow the finisher into that tool with a gui.

my kids are 17 and 20 the last few year gettin one through college and the other thru high school then college has taken the few hours a week i used to have for this. I keep promising myself i will get this done. It's simply a matter of time and resources.

We have a great team here and all are appreciated present and former users members and team.

Thanks Steve you are our newest contributing member and i have perhaps not taken time to thank you myself big_smile

Thank you! well done.

DriverPacks Solution is an Application that uses our driverpacks
(and also some of our packs, that have been modified by a few Russians)
They have written a GUI / front-end for our DriverPacks that works well.

It is a Nice GUI with some cool features big_smile.
They have a Page here at DriverPacks that they keep updated with release info and DL links ect.

Unfortunately they do not believe in extolling our hard work.
IE their Application is USELESS without our driverpacks however
they go out of their way to try to not give us much if any credit for their "solution".

We have always been about UNATTENDED installation, DriverPacks Solution is written to be a manual installer and therefore is not our thing. Certainly they fill a void that at present we do not care to fill big_smile (attended installation)

there are a few others that also blatantly pass our work off as their own. A search of our forum will yield some of these "discussions" we have had over the years.

SAD was my idea and original script (for XP) that mr_smartepants almost singlehandedly grew into it's current version

SAD is meant to be an unattended driver installer for deployment scenarios.

summary
they favor attended
we favor unattended
