I think The DriverPacks Team is known as Bashrat in the RUnet to distinguish from the other driverpacks. But what I was asking is a general term what would refer to people who makes driverpacks.
Also I don't know how to give a proper credit to the other driverpacks so I would prefer a common credit which lists all maintainers without giving a preference to a particular team.

All we want is a little recognition of our work... Wouldn't you?
after you guys all become millionaires a donation might be nice too. wink smile tongue

ArtX need money for the server and hosting. I suggested asking for donations instead of paid DVD but the publisher doesn't believe in it. I don't ask or get any money and it's fine with me as long the project is Open Source and free, and we provide a good service to the users.
My job is repairing computers and printers. As I don't have an Internet connection at work, I have to use driverpacks. This is why I'm interested in it.

PS Yes if you see another project that is useing our packs make sure they also give us a little credit!
Most of them already do wink

I'll do.

How would you feel if DriverPack Solution did not mention you!

It is fine with me. I don't ask for credit and never care if I'm mentioned. Though I understand that it's very important for some people. I believe not giving enough credit to the team isn't acceptable. The problem appears that I though giving links in the release announcement was enough but now I think driverpack maintainers deserve credit at the about window as well.

I still don't lost all hope in DriverPack Solution to remain GPL. The publisher said it won't restrict us after March, 1. It didn't want me to leave the project and create a separate branch because it would harm the reputation of the program and I'm considered a valuable programmer. I also don't want to leave ArtX. The publisher thinks there is no violation of license in holding back the public release while the DVD are being sold and isn't going to change the license. If it did change, I would start an independent branch.
I was too upset to work on the project so took a break till March, 1.

OK. I think driverpack maintainers should be mentioned, could you help me writing the text of credit. I don't want to appear active to the publisher during my break but I think it worth creating a new revision at the SVN soon.

I'm sorry I didn't let you know that your drivepacks were used and distributed with the program. I felt the program wasn't ready for introduction here. Also I think it's common problem, there are a lot of unofficial distribution on the Internet based on DriverPack Solution or Drivers Installer Assistant which include driverpacks.

BTW. are there any legal requirements for driverpack maintainers? I'm asking that so I could tell that to the other driverpacks maintainers in case they aren't aware of it.

How should I refer the creators of driverpacks? Is the term "driverpack maintainers" any good?

I think I should clarify something because it was deleted.
ArtX is the author of the program, he released it under GPL, created the website, the forums. I joined this project only on July 27 because of the license so I was naturally upset over ArtX making a deal with this publisher.

thanks for the explaination and the links! I still think your project is dead without our packs wink
Without drivers it is not much good big_smile Just saying...

That's true. Some driverpacks don't have counterparts elsewhere and are available only here.

OverFlow wrote:

how hard would it be to credit us? One line, Thanks to DriverPacks.net for the DriverPacks! It is not much to expect nor do I think it is unreasonable.

I wasn't sure I should add this to the about window of the program. After all DriverPack Solution doesn't relay only on these driverpacks and we would have to mention everyone. QuarQ is mentoined there because he is also an active and helpful tester. I always provide links to the maintainers when I release so I didn't think there would be a problem.

OverFlow wrote:

PS the download i got from the page (DRPSu9Pro) had 47 driverpacks and all of them were from us wink

I hadn't joined the project then. I also don't think it was a good idea of ArtX to put up such an old version on the website. I think he want to make DriverPack Solution 10 look better in compassion.

While DriverPack Solution uses driverpacks made by the bashrat team it doesn't completely depends on these driverpacks. There are at least 3 other driverpack maintainers in the RUnet: SamLab, QuarQ, Greg.

It's to some extend true that DriverPack Solution 9 and previous versions didn't give enough credit to the bashrat team so when I joined the project I had to do a research to determine the origin of the driverpacks. This it why I created a branch: DriverPack Solution 9 Dev Build so I could collect all driverpack and upload them one place at my hosting at mediafire, and put driverpack in different folders based on the maintainer. I also provided links to the maintainers so users could contacts them and download the latest driverpacks.

DriverPack Solution 9 is the latest official version available for download. It is so old it doesn't have any of my code. It corresponds R2 at the SVN.
DriverPack Solution 9 Dev Build was meant to be my experimental branch. It corresponds R36 at the SVN. I consider it outdated and don't provide bugfixes to it anymore as I was expecting to release a new version.
DriverPack Solution 10 is based on R144(as of now) and incorporates all the improvements. I'm a strong believer in Open Source and GPL but unfortunately the publisher who is responsible for delivering DVD, won't let me release the new version till the customers get their paid DVDs.

Until then, watch out for fakes on the Internet, which were made because I failed to release the project.
The project is well known among Russian speaking users I was planning to make a proper introduction of the project on some forums in the English speaking community but I didn't because I didn't have the release. I'm going to explain in more details tomorrow.

So... Is there any chance to restore my long post? I didn't expect it to be deleted so I didn't make any backup. I guess I have learned of importance of coping my posts the hard way.

Anyway, what part of my post did make you so aggravated?

Sorry for bringing such a topic. While having XP x64 driverpacks would be nice I understand this XP x64 isn't likely to become widespread enough to support x64 driverpacks. I just wanted to know the status(I do know it now). Besides some drivers can be found in Vista x64 driverpacks, so it isn't so bad.

I think businesses are going to stick to Windows XP x86 for older hardware and Windows 7 for newer hardware anyway.
As long the driverpack team support Windows 7 x64, most users will be satisfied.

Thanks for the answers and all the hard work on the driverpacks.

I just noticed I missed some information like "DriverPack Chipset 9.02 for Windows 2000/XP/2003 (x86)". But such information is availble only for the main driverpacks so it doesn't answer all the questions.
The reason I'm interested in this information is I have Windows XP x64 and it appears there is no driverpack for this system yet.

However I was able to update my drivers from Vista x64 driverpack. I though this pack had only Vista drivers so i was surprised to know it wasn't the case. It appears Vista driverpacks have some drivers for older Windows and that made me wonder if this pack has all drivers for older Windows or it has limited collection of such drivers.
If it's so, the question is:
Are Vista/7 driverpacks going to replace NT5 driverpack at some point or they will stay separated?

As for Vista/7 and x64 related questions. This is mostly out of curiosity as I'm still considering switching to Windows 7 and wondering if I'll be having problems with old hardware.

It looks "the assertion list" was a bad way to get the answers and it may confuse visitors of this forum so I'm putting a notice.

Disregard this post. Read my post below.

I'd like to clear up some things for myself.
There is a list of my assertions. Some of them are correct, other are wrong, and some are incomplete.
I'll be updating the list (this first post)with correct information as I'll be getting your feedback. If you're a moderator, you can go ahead and correct the information right away.

Driverpack compatibility:
1. Driverpacks for XP x86
Drivers are usable on Windows 2000/XP.

2. Driverpacks for XP x86 (3rd party)
Drivers are usable on Windows 2000/XP.

3. Driverpacks for Vista x86
Drivers are usable on Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7

4. Driverpacks for Vista x64
Drivers are usable on Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7

1. It's impossible to install x64 drivers on x86 Windows.
2. XP/Vista/7 x64 accepts x86 drivers.
3. It's impossible to install XP drivers on Vista/7.
4. DriveerPacks don't have any drivers for Windows 98 because they were stripped.

64-bit support:
1. Windows 2000 has few x64 drivers.
2. Windows XP has x64 drivers for basic hardware.
3. Windows Vista has x64 drivers for most new drivers but x86 drivers are still needed for old hardware.
4. Windows 7 has [how much?] x64 drivers.
5. x64 drivers are always superior to x86 drivers when available.
